Love it All
I was raised Catholic and competently educated by the Jesuit Order of the church. This became a problem, because I was taught to be intelligent and then I was asked to believe all the nonsense pedalled as Truth; like an all loving God will send you to hell after you die if you break some silly rules that everyone breaks, including the priests. All-Loving! Are you kidding? And the hypocracy, my ...

The Year of Disappearances
The Year of Disappearances takes off where The Society of S left us. Ariella Montero faces many trials and mysteries in her quest to find out more about her family and where she belongs in this world. Susan Hubbard has outdone herself in this latest book. Her characters are believable and have depth. The story is riveting, and in parts, quite chilling. She masters the technique of just ...

Terror in the Sky
In the 19th century swarms of locusts regularly devastated the farms in the West. Some wondered if it was divine punishment or personal failures. The Federal Government established a commission to study the problem. A few decades later the Rocky Mountain locust disappeared like an extinct species. Jeffrey Lockwood decided to investigate this long-lost pest and try to solve this ecological ...

FINALLY back in print
One of the most remarkable novels ever written, The Disappearance must have caused a sensation in 1951 when it first appeared. I won't belabor the plot, because others have already recounted it. But its frank analysis of the way in which our society separates men and women, teaches children to be ashamed of their bodies, teaches men and women NOT to fulfill their potentials and destinies but to ...

Almost indescribable
I was recommended this book by a friend while climbing Worcester Mountain near Middlesex, Vermont. I grabbed it just before a solo overnight on a section of the Long Trail. The only copy the store had was an autographed (for cover price), but the owner assured me that Mr. Mosher would appreciate my stuffing the book into my pack for a hike in the Green Mountains. I trusted the person who ...

Behind the Disappearances
I first encountered this book during my undergraduate studies at SUNY Geneseo. I was taking a human rights class and this book literally changed the way I view the world. This is a dense read, with a lot of detail, and reading the footnotes is a MUST, however if it does not change the way you view the world around you you haven't read it right. This is a must read for anyone who believes that ...
The Aesthetics of Disappearance (Semiotext(e) / Foreign Agents)
Paul Virilio
Semiotext(e)
, 1991
In The Aesthetics of Disappearance , Paul Virilio traces out the relationship of biological optics to the technological "production of appearance." In the perceptual gaps demanding illusions of continuity, Virilio posits a hyper-opportunity for the production of art in speed. Jumping from Old Testament parable to the history of contemporary cinema, to the history of philosophy and contemporary technology, Virilio teleports among an irregular ...

The Attacks on this Book are as Weak as the Arguments of the Book are Strong
It is simply untrue to write, as Amazon Reviewer Aaron Swartz writes, that Neil Postman praised the Children's Letters "because they agreed with him". Rather, Postman praised them because they showed by their responses that they valued the declining institution of Childhood, and that they were clearly distressed by the possibilities raised in Postman's Book. Basically, Postman in his book ...

Stavans Plumbs the Mysteries of Identity
In the preface to "The Disappearance: A Novella and Stories" (Northwestern University Press), the prolific and often provocative Ilan Stavans informs us that the "three stories in this volume are concerned, in one way or another, with silence--both earthly and divine." Hopefully Stavans will forgive those readers who discern a different thematic pattern in these well-crafted little mysteries ...

MONTAUK INTRIGUE
Montauk, a pretty famous village in the USA, now has a first time novel set right in this fishing hamlet and what an alluring plot Richard Prince has woven! Subtle humor, winning characters, exciting fishing and an unusual, quirky mystery enchants Prince's audience. Definitely different, delicious, deadly and downright dynamic!
The Disappearance of Introspection (Bradford Books)
William Lyons
The MIT Press
, 1988
William Lyons presents an original thesis on introspection as self-interpretation in terms of a culturally influenced model. His work rests on a lucid, careful, and critical examination of the transformations that have occurred over the past century in the concepts and models of introspection in philosophy and psychology. He reviews the history of introspection in the work of Wundt, Boring, and William James, and reactions to it by behaviorists ...

Freedman is on my list of authors to read!
Wow, this was a really good book. I enjoyed it very much. I got it from my dad, who happened to pick it up at a used book store and read it & passed it on. I definately have Freedman on my fav. authors list now. This book was perfectly paced. I liked the way the story evolved and things slowly crept out. It was a surprise ending for me.

true crime, truly great reading
For full disclosure, David Hanks is my brother-in-law, and I read his book in two sittings. As a person intimately familiar with the environment described in David's book, I can say without reservation that he has captured the essence of the small Southern Georgia community in which we grew up. This fictional accounting of authentic life experiences juxtaposed with the macabre events of his ...

On Friday, September 21, as I was driving listening to Ira Glass's This American Life on National Public Radio, a lengthy portion of this book was read. I had to pull over to the side of the road, unable to continue until it was finished. For those of us so far away from the site of last week's horror, connected only through television, radio, and print, it has been hard to move from the numbers ...

An Outstanding Work
I just finished this book and intend to read it again right away. I found it to be a very powerful work and am disappointed that it does not seem to have a stronger following; this is a real gem that has apparently been lost in the shuffle. Written for both believers and non-believers, Friedman proposes a very interesting framework for understanding man's relationship with God and our place in ...
