Poetry is a personal art form - I loved this one
Poetry is a very personal art form, and there will always be divergent reactions to the same work. I have read several textbooks and anthologies. This may not be the strongest text or the broadest anthology, yet taken as a whole it is the most inspiring book about poetry I have ever read. This is a text that stirs the readers emotions to someting other than boredom. It was refreshing to find ...

Excellent Text Book and Survey of Philosophy
This is one of the best survey texts or "history of philosophy" texts I have read that has been written in recent years. William F. Lawhead covers every major period in the history of philosophy that any student of philosophy would need to research. He covers the Ancient Period in Part 1, the Middle Ages in part 2, The Modern period in part 3, and the Contemporary period in part 4. All of the ...

Galileo's Ideas and Their Defense
The Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo consists of four works by Galileo Galilei: The Starry Messenger, Letters on Sunspots, Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina, and The Assayer. They are each wonderfully translated by Stillman Drake. He omits unnecessary parts of the texts, to prevent verbosity or boredom, while still giving the reader the full sense of each work. Drake is a professor of the ...

Textbook
This exact book is a requirement for a theology course at Walsingham Academy. It arrived in perfect condition, almost as quick as buying in the store, except someone else drove. I am buying more online than ever--the technology is maturing. I would rather sit in my den than drive through all sorts of weather--with no guarantee the book will be there when I arrive. The book is an excellent ...

The Real Facts About Creative People
Few activities are a misunderstood by the general public as inventing and creativity. Sadly, Hollywood and television often portray the great inventor, scientist or musician as some sort of "mad genius". This book seeks to put the study of creativity on a rational basis. For the purposes of this book, creativity is defined as "... to bring into existence something genuinely new that is valued ...

The Best Archaelology Book for General Readers
A work of art in and of itself, "Discovery!" illuminates the most significant archeological discoveries of the past 15 years. Many of the accounts published here are by the discovers themselves, accounts written with a general audience in mind. The editor/compiler, Brian M. Fagan, is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the University of California< While the text is the most important element ...

A Concise History of the Subject
As a reviewer of nonfiction I tend to rate based on whether or not the author achieves the goal stated in the introduction. When this book was written the shelves were far less crowded than today, but it still serves its purpose in giving the reader a layout of a surprisingly lengthy history in a concise and easy-to-read manual. Although it gives few details on the raw science itself it deftly ...

Not to be missed
Every page of this book yields unexpected and brilliant insights and sidelights into the motley collection of nationalities, languages, and races that somehow became France. The story of Bernadette of Lourdes. The creation of the "official" meter. The persecution of a particular group for a thousand years (and no, it wasn't the Jews). Add to this a smooth and witty prose style and you have a book ...

Very interesting
I have to ask myself, "What is the basis for my scientific knowledge?" On a daily basis, as I am a chemist. I have often been struck by arguments for "induction" as lacking credibility, because how can one argue of probabilities with an unknown sample size? Popper argues that a proposing scientific hypothesis is an inductive act, but it is a creative act not a logical one, but that scientific ...

Discovery of the child
This is a very good introduction to Dr Maria Montessori's teachings and ideas. It gives an account of how she derived many of her methods and the materials she used. The book is filled with details and interesting encounters with her little charges which makes her an endearing educator. However, it does not contain enough information for the actual exercises the child is supposed to practise.

This is a beautifully written, clear and understandable analysis of the diverse ways of thinking in contemporary sociology. Graduate students will find it indispensible as they make very important decisions about their own careers. Reading Abbott is much ...
