A Graduate Student's Best Friend
This is an excellent,well-written guide for graduate students. It fills in all the information the average committee fails to tell the student. If a student follows the text, he or she should have a successful experience; consequently,I have recommended this book to numerous students. Excellent guide!
Having put off the process of converting my dissertation into a manuscript for over a year, this book was exactly what I needed to get my brain going in the right direction. Even though I had excellent guidance and was encouraged to write my dissertation in an accessible writing style, this book was still very helpful. I highly recommend it!!

Excellent, practical, dissertation advice.
It was obvious to me that some people who wrote reviews only read the title and sample pages, or just didn't comprehend the message of the book. The author does NOT say a dissertation is the same as a thesis. What the author DOES say, is that a dissertation or thesis CAN be completed in two semesters of less. The author does NOT say your dissertation should only be 100 pages. What the author ...

Good Information for Doctoral Students
I discovered a previous edition of this book when I was a Ph.D. student, which was not easy to do given how few good books there are on the subject, and I found it to be very helpful; particularly the chapters on reviewing the literature in a manner appropriate to your dissertation topic. I used these ideas when I was crafting my own dissertation and they helped me to write a much more ...

Very Helpful
I have only just begun to use the book, but it appears to be full of valuable advice. There is a considerable amount of practical advice for both the research and writing process - this book isn't just conceptual. For example, the author gives ideas on how to organized your lit-review reading and how to use EndNote (or other similar software) to organize your notes so that all of your notes are ...

This book was a huge help
The most daunting thing about doing a dissertation is that its both a mammoth task and a brand new one at the same time. I found this book incredibly helpful because it provided practical, seasoned advice in a way that helped me move forward, one step at a time, chapter by chapter. It provided the guidance I needed to remove the uncertainty and doubt that can be so paralyzing at times. They've ...

Excellent read
As I'm preparing my doctoral dissertation, I've read a number of books on the topic. This is the only one from which I was actually able to learn something. Most remind you of the obvious. This text goes beyond, providing checklists, concrete examples, and the answers to questions that most would be too timid to ask.

Survival!
I thought it was just me. I had a HORRIBLE experience at the end of my thesis. My defense went perfectly and then a week before graduation a committee member (not my advisor) told me I had to re-write an entire chapter. No matter what I did she was unsatisfied. A friend recommended this book to me when I was near suicide. I thought I was going crazy and didn't know why all these 'blocks' ...

This book has served as an invaluable guide as I write my qualitative dissertation.
