Black & White & Dead All Over intrigues and commands one's interest throughout

When Ratnoff's secretary, Ellen Butterby, discovers his body in the New York Globe's newsroom, the newspaper's future is thrown into chaos. Senior editors grapple with the fact that one of their own has been brutally murdered in their hallowed workplace. An editor's spike, a symbol used to kill stories in old-time publishing ...

painfully realistic account of an addict's life
This is a painfully realistic portrait of an addict. There were times I had to put the book down because it brought back too many memories of my past. It's about time that a no-excuse, no-holds-barred, truthful narrative was put into print. The writing is flowing and electrifying. I highly recommend this book to any addict(recovering or not) or family/friend of an active addict.

Audition
I've read two-thirds of Audition, and did a 180 degree turn in my opinion of Ms. Walters. Her life as a young girl echoes much of mine, with the exception of the financial security. Perhaps it was the time of "children are to be seen, not heard," that made her into a strong and sincere person dealing with her contacts. It was a time when we all had more empathy toward one another, and the ...

Evaluating Real Change
Gringrich cites American's responses to polls on topics that are very important such as health care, how to handle terrorism, taxes, competitiveness, etc. The results of the poll show a preponderance of Americans believe in common sense solutions yet our elected representatives cannot agree on anything. He identifies a series of solutions that address these important topics and shows how the ...

Evading the threat of human intimacy in immoderation
After watching and liking Sean Penn's movie version of this story, I didn't think I needed to read the book. My daughter told me otherwise. She said, the book has things that are missing in the film. And the book idolizes the hero less than the film does. She is right. Krakauer was first hired by an outdoors magazine to write an article about the death of the young man in the Alaskan wilderness. ...

Wholesome Reading
A personal story of the relationship between a father and his son. This story personifies what a father/son relationship should be. The values of the father handed down to the son serve to bring that son into manhood and establish his outlook on life, his ethics and moreover his treatment of this fellow man. An excellent book and a must read for every father/son relationship. Robert Allen, ...

The Dictionary Dilemma Is Over
This dictionary is a gem for use at school, at home, at work. The color plates make this particular dictionary reader-friendly to any age from 12 years and older. The entries are complete enough for use by a sophisticated reader, but yet in language that is understandable to a younger reader. I have used lots of different dictionaries in the classroom over the years, and this one is certainly ...

Some good, some bad, but mostly bad
I get that she's a succubus, and that she really is involved in quite a few committed relationships, but why are the parties in love? I can see the ardeur pairing her up with Nathaniel and Micah (explained in the last book), but I still don't get the relationships with Jean Claude, Asher and Richard. The latter in particular has made her feel particularly bad, but they can't seem to stop ...

Great Photographer's Photoshop Book
This is one of my favorite Photoshop CS3 books; I have quite a few. The quality of the book is excellent and I have learned so much from the lessons. The book comes with a very good DVD that makes this book an outstanding value. I have read some of the bad reviews. I think they expected a "dummies" or "beginners" type book. This is for a photographer who wants to get the most out of Adobe ...

An excellent purchase
My husband and I purchased our first home a year ago. We knew that it was important to put together a will, and we also wanted to draw up health care power of attorney documents. I called a bunch of lawyers to get an idea of how much these simple legal documents would cost, and I was blown away that the quotes ranged from $750 - $1,000. That seemed pretty ridiculous, especially considering the ...

I had so much fun with this book. I cannot wait until the next book of People Jumbo Puzzles comes out. I ordered the first one also, and just starting to work in it. When a Crocodile Eats the Sun
Peter Godwin's book, titled above, is a very worth while read. In plain dialogue he lets the rest of the world know what is really going on in Zimbabwe in the most sensitive way possible through his own families lives. The book is beautifully written, I couldn't put it down once I started reading it, more especially after following the last fiasco of an election in June 2008. Why the other ...

The golden age of book publishing, Al Silverman informs us with utter certainty, began in 1946 and lasted into the late 1970s and early 1980s. In his intimate history of those years, Silverman sets out to prove this sweeping conceit by relying on the eyes and ears and memories of the men and women who were there creating that history. Without inhibition, more than 120 of the most notable heads of houses, editors and publishers of this time ...

A Life Worth Living
Jean-Dominique Bauby is a victim of 'Locked-In Syndrome." At the age of 43, he suffered a massive stroke that left him unable to move or speak. His only means of communication -- his left eyelid. Bauby spent weeks painstakingly dictating this memoir -- letter by letter. I read this book in one sitting, it was that captivating. Through short vignettes, Bauby manages to describe the minute ...

When I found out I had type 2 Diabetes, I freaked out on how to change my cooking habits to fit my needs as well as meals for my husband. I found this book and as the title explains...its as Easy as 1 2 3. Have enjoyed the receipes and lucky for my sake so has my husband. I have been intensely studying French for almost 3 years now, including about 16 weeks in a language school in France plus hundreds of hours practicing with young French people in my home town. I own quite a number of the Larousse dictionaries in their various sizes. Even for travel, I find the pocket dictionary to be extremely frustrating, bordering on useless. It has a very small number of ...
