What a classic
This is a re-read from my youth and I am glad that it has been reissued. I love all of Engdahl's work and I only wish that she would write more after her long dry period. A well-writte intelligent and charming female protagonist learns and grows within a setting much like early (good) Andre Norton- reminiscent of Ice Crown, in fact.

Another fantastic novel!!
I read the first book in this trilogy, and this one certainly doesn't disappoint! I read it in a single sitting, and am eagerly awaiting "The Firebrand." The characters were interesting and believable, and so was the love story -- not a given, these days. I heartily recommend this book and the others in the series!

A Magnificent Adult Fairy Tale
On occasion a novel receives harsh treatment from critics not based on the actual work, but rather because it is not what the critics want it to be; this then is the only explanation I can find to explain the harsh, often shrill, reviews received by Rushdie's equisite "The Enchantress of Florence." Having read several of these negative assessments I find the same sub-text runs through them all, ...

Discover a place which becomes a true home town
This small volume overflows with passion for Barcelona's art and architecture, subjects Hughes generously expands to include cultural history, food, and politics, as well as sketches of his personal engagement with Barcelona's people and the creative life-force of the city. Hughes writes, "You are lucky if not too late in life, you discover a second city other than your place of birth which ...

Great authors and four very different stories
Rapture volume one is most defintely a lesson in variety, but all the stores are hot, hot, and hotter. For futuristic, there is no one like Lara Santiago to dish up lots of action and..well, great sex. Gracie McKeever writes edgy, sexy fantasy with a unique twist and this story is all her. Morgan Ashbury can summon up fantastic men and we-can-all-relate-to heroines, and in this book, she gives ...

A Different kind of Fairytale
I have always enjoyed Bertrice Small's book. They are written with such flare and feeling. She pulls the reader right along with her heroines in the story. We not only read, but feel the story along with the characters. This story is no different. The lives of Small's characters never follow the normal path, but go along different paths, that one would normally not think of. This story is ...

What a delightful book!
I purchased this book on a whim based upon an amazon.com listmania list. Then it sat around on my shelf for awhile. Until one day I was having a bad week and needed a read to get my mind off my troubles. I grabbed THE ENCHANTRESS and by the second page I was hooked. For the next few difficult days I picked up this PB book and it instantly transported me to Morgana & Garrick's world. It had a ...

My Second Victoria Holt Novel, and My Favorite One of the Two.
This Holt novel, unlike the prior one I read (Seven for a Secret), takes off right out of the starting gate and doesn't let you go until the very end. Yes, I could see some of the things that were coming from a mile away, yet others not so much. Holt shows an adept talent in this novel, moreso than the first I read, to twist and turn her plot enough to keep you glued and to care about Suewellen ...

Often Ignored Historical Event
Leigh Greenwood proves his mettle as a historical fiction writer by writing `Rebel Enchantress'. I had automatically assumed it was set in the Civil War. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to find that he had chosen a little talked about era in US History: reconstruction after the Revolutionary War, and Shay's Rebellion. The events outside of the world created by Delilah Stowbridge and Nathan ...

Another excellent book by Meagan McKinney!
Just when you think you can't take it anymore, Meagan McKinney gives you the fairy tale ending you're hoping for. This is another excellent book with a sexy, erotic hero and a beautiful, bewitching heroine. McKinney's descriptions make you feel like you are actually there. The time period is hoop skirts in the south. McKinney loves to make the couples hate each other so much that they ...

A great book
A very pleasant biography in an original format, allowing for a good understanding of the main character. Typical american biography, where few details are untold, and where the author remains "transparent". We have to assume that B.A.Toole likes Ada, since she wrote a book about her, but we can't figure out why: was it beause she was Byron's daughter, or because she was Babbage's assistant, ...

A memorable tale of a memorable woman.
Now here's a fantasy novel, and a female protagonist, worth identifying with! Sadira sets out on a dangerous quest alone, leaving behind both of her lovers, because she refuses to let herself be fought over. Along the way, reminders of her past, including the father she's never known and the halfling chieftain she swore loyalty to in the first book, distract her from her goals. It takes ...

I knew a bit of what was in this book before I purchased it, I had been using a library copy for work in obtaining my Master's Degree (My specialty is Arthurian literature and I needed some good sources on Morgan le Fay).
