Self-sufficiency for all
"The Backyard Homestead: Produce all the food you need on just a quarter acre!" may be the best food self-sufficiency book available today. The well-organized book packs hundreds of ideas into its pages, allowing readers to pick and choose what works for them, no matter how much space and time they have available. Want to milk a goat or grow wheat? Keep bees or smoke meat? Make beer or bake ...
Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century
The MIT Press, 2009
Many teens today who use the Internet are actively involved in participatory cultures?joining online communities (Facebook, message boards, game clans), producing creative work in new forms (digital sampling, modding, fan videomaking, fan fiction), working in teams to complete tasks and develop new knowledge (as in Wikipedia), and shaping the flow of media (as in blogging or podcasting). A growing body of scholarship suggests potential benefits ...

Recommended as THE book to understand the fundamentals of social media collaboration
Clay Shirky captured the ethos of social media with his book "Here comes everybody." He follows that book up with one that concentrates on the fundamentals of turning our cognitive surplus into value. Cognitive Surplus provides a compelling and clear description of the fundamentals of social media and collaboration as well providing principles that are guiding developments and innovation in ...

It offers a condensed version of a longer treatment provided in the book Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out (MIT Press, 2009). The authors present empirical ...
The Future of Learning Institutions in a Digital Age

The MIT Press, 2009
A reflection on the effect of new technologies on higher learning
The "Digital Age" that we live in has been the subject of many (too many?) books, articles, essays and blogs in recent times. Everyone who has not lived in a cave in the last few years realizes that the pace of technological advancement is increasing, and many of the traditional forms of communicating, working and shopping are continuously being redefined. Despite all of this, the role and the ...

Forced reading vs. selective reading
The book was required reading for my 15 year old daughter. She hated it. While discussing the necessity of completing the required reading whether she liked it or not (I discussed loudly, she whined loudly) I picked it up and was fascinated with it from the beginning and was totally blown away with the ending. For a sci-fi and abstract reading junkie it's a gold mine. For a concrete thinker ...
New Digital Media and Learning as an Emerging Area and "Worked Examples" as One Way Forward
The MIT Press, 2010
In this report, noted scholar James Paul Gee discusses the evolution of digital media and learning (DMAL) from its infancy as an "academic area" into a more organized field or coherent discipline. Distinguishing among academic areas, fields, disciplinary specializations, and thematic disciplines, Gee describes other academic areas that have fallen into these categories or developed into established disciplines. He argues that DMAL will not ...
Young People, Ethics, and the New Digital Media: A Synthesis from the Good Play Project
The MIT Press, 2009
Social networking, blogging, vlogging, gaming, instant messaging, downloading music and other content, uploading and sharing their own creative work: these activities made possible by the new digital media are rich with opportunities and risks for young people. This report, part of the GoodPlay Project, undertaken by researchers at Harvard Graduate School of Education's Project Zero, investigates the ethical fault lines of such digital pursuits. ...
The Civic Potential of Video Games
, ...
The MIT Press, 2009
This report focuses on the civic aspects of video game play among youth. According to a 2006 survey, 58 percent of young people aged 15 to 25 were civically "disengaged," meaning that they participated in fewer than two types of either electoral activities (defined as voting, campaigning, etc.) or civic activities (for example, volunteering). Kahne and his coauthors are interested in what role video games may or may not play in this ...

Definitely a Craft
Research is most definitely a craft and as with all research books, there is a great deal written about scientific research and medical research. Generic research guides do little to offer help to Musicological research. Yet this is a helpful resource tool if taken generically.

Strunk and White to the Rescue!
This book served me well when I was an editor/writer long ago and I view it as a must have for all writers. Now that my son is writing, I got this for him and he told me that every other writer in his department had a copy of it. It should be required for all writers and non-writers both. I can't recommend it enough!

The Book You Can't Write Without
This book is to writing and the English language in the same way that a golf swing is to hitting the golf ball. If you have to remember everything that you are supposed to do with your swing, you will become a golf statue for the entire (cross-out--entire) winter. Reading "The Elements of Style" can also intimidate you from ever touching the keyboard. You might up end up staring at the screen ...

Let it Rot!: The Gardener's Guide to Composting (Third Edition)

nothing rotten about this book
I've been composting for about six months, as a completely ignorant amateur. I just piled up all of my lawn trimmings and vegetable kitchen scraps out next to the garden - it worked, but I needed to know more. Who knew I knew so little! I was avoiding putting things in my pile that belonged there. Layering, turning, components- I am now so ravenous for compostables I look at everything ...
