The American Heritage Dictionary of Indo-European Roots12 reviews
Calvert Watkins

Houghton Mifflin, 2000

As Near Perfection As One Could Ask
This beautiful and scholarly tome has more facts per inch in its 149pp than in almost any other work in my library. The second paperback edition is easily worth three times its cover price, and except for one flaw, (minor, and noted by other reviewers) this work is as near perfection as one could ask in a work of linguistic reference. First, in praise: To the scholar (or layman) studying ...

Chris Freiler

Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2008

Fantastic resource
This is a very concise review book that basically covers anything and everything you need to know for the AP exam. Throughout the whole course of the school year I Struggled to maintain a B average in the class, due to the fact that I never touched the text. This book saved me on the AP test. With diligent application and studying of the material presented, there is no reason as to why anyone ...

Cracking the AP European History Exam, 2008 Edition (College Test Prep)1 review
Princeton Review

Princeton Review, 2007

The best for this subject, easily.
It's too bad there aren't more reviews to back my opinion, because this book easily beats out the Kaplan and Cliffs Notes versions, both of which I became familiar with while studying. The summaries and simple language were key in helping me remember and learn things that weren't in my textbook. The practice tests are also better than any other competitor, and the opening section on how to ...

European History (Cliffs AP)21 reviews
Michael J. Romano

Cliffs Notes, 2002

The best review book
This review book is excellent for many reasons. Its review itself is straight-forward to read and is presented in a way that is not boring. While I would fall asleep reading Princeton Review, I was able to focus on the text and review well. The way the author bolded important events and people was also extremely helpful. There are also 10 multiple choice questions at the end of every section that ...

Before European Hegemony: The World System A.D. 1250-13508 reviews
Janet L. Abu-Lughod

Oxford University Press, USA, 1991

Eurasian interactions
A work drawing on deep scholarship providing welcome adjustment to views that overstate Europe's precocity and importance before 1500. Europe was a peripheral backwater prior to its export of the Eurasian disease pool to the Americas (and even for some time after). Abu-Lughod examines each major area of the Eurasian trading network in term, bringing out how much events in one area were affected ...

Modern European History39 reviews
Birdsall S. Viault

McGraw-Hill, 1990

Must Have for the AP Euro Exam
I had one of the most boring textbooks invented for the AP Euro class. I couldn't stand reading it and as a result, I was not one of the top scorers on the tests in my class. However, I used this book to study for my in-class final and the AP exam and I did well on both. Thanks to this book, I got a 5 on the AP. The book has good information and it helped me learn things that my AP teacher ...

War in European History8 reviews
Michael Howard

Oxford University Press, USA, 2001

Essential Reading
A friend of mine recommended this book to me. At the time it was required reading at West Point and it very well may still be. No other book displays the history of war in Europe in such a concise and complete way. It also shows how the nations of Europe developed and what gave them thier defining characteristics. Anyone with an interest in Western history or military history should own a ...

The Complete Idiot's Guide to European History4 reviews
Nathan Barber

Alpha, 2006

Very helpful
I read this book over summer because I wanted to get ahed in the European History class I would take in the fall. It is a very good overview of most of the major events in European history. Be Warned that this is a good, quick overview, which only covers the basics. Good for people who have not been in a European history class before.

The European Dream: How Europe's Vision of the Future Is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream66 reviews
Jeremy Rifkin

Tarcher, 2005

Which side of the divide?
I found TED to be insightful and though-provoking. Essentially, is sets forth a dichotomy of sorts between two fundamentally different views of life, value, and society: the (traditional) American Dream and the (emerging) European Dream. While perhaps a bit oversimplified, Rifkin juxtaposes: America: hyper-individualism, social-darwinish, societial disconnect. Europe: collective-mindedness, ...

The European Reformations5 reviews
Carter Lindberg

Wiley-Blackwell, 1996

An important development in Western culture, well explained.
This is a must-read. Lindberg's introduction to the Reformation not only weaves an exciting narrative about the men and women (mostly men) who shaped the Reformation, but provides insight to the culture that produced them with real sympathy and conviction. In addition to the expected chapters on Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, the "radical reformers" et al, Lindbergh explains the Reformations ...

The European Union: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)4 reviews
John Pinder, Simon Usherwood

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

The Merits of an Introduction
It is a good book. If you are looking for an introduction without getting into long theoretical discussions. The merit of this book is its simplicity. It tells the story of the European Union without leaving any of the main topics out. It reads easily. Has a few very useful charts and photographs. Its up to date, year 2001; I could not find another book that would bring the reader up to the ...

Rustic European Breads from Your Bread Machine31 reviews
Linda West Eckhardt, Diana Collingwood Butts

Broadway, 1997

Lovely companion to your bread machine
For those who love to bake (like me) but don't want the mixing, kneading and first rising steps (no time for these with two jobs), this book is a winner. Basic steps are achieved with the dough cycle of the bread machine, then you personalize your loaf by shaping it and baking it in your oven. We all love bakery and restaurant bread, and you CAN have it at home! Best of all, you know what's in ...

The European Economy since 1945: Coordinated Capitalism and Beyond (Princeton Economic History of the Western ...2 reviews
Barry Eichengreen

Princeton University Press, 2008

An excellent synthesis
I strongly recommend this book if you are interested in the subject. I found it to be easy to read and an excellent synthesis of modern scholarship on Europe's post-WWII economic growth. The bibliography is also excellent. I used the book to review for my comprehensive exam in European Political Economy and found it immeasurably useful--in fact it was by far the best thing I read to prepare.
