The treasure that was Ancient Egypt
I just reviewed another book for children about the treasures found in the tomb of Tutankhamun and sold at his latest traveling exhibit in Dallas. Now here is DK's Eyewitness version of "Ancient Egypt" for comparison. Let's stop now. There is no comparison. Inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun is designed to study tomb treasures and the context in which they were created. It is perfect for its ...

Invaluable Resource Book
I decided to buy "Eyewitnesses to the Civil War" based on the reviews - and am very glad I did. Found a new copy from an Amazon-affiliated dealer for under $10.00, which is a wonderful deal for a nice coffee table book of over 400 pages, filled with interesting Civil War articles and 375 photos of battle fields, daguerrotype portraits, uniforms and gear. It is with pleasure that I recommend it to ...

A Revealing Narrative
If you were an intelligence officer fluent in speaking Arabic and served in Iraq during its war with Iran and later as General Schwarzkopf's interpreter during Desert Shield and Desert Storm you would have a lot to tell that could not be found in American news reports--and Rick Francona does just that in Ally To Adversary. This book takes you into Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, where you will ...

America's Link to the Front Lines of World War II
James Toban has written a stunning book in "Ernie Pyle's War: America's Eyewitness to World War II". Toban has succeeded in giving readers the rare opportunity to see the human frailties concealed within one of America's greatest and most valuable World War II correspondents. James Toban present a picture of the complex Ernie Pyle; a man that entered the World War II carrying only a broken ...

Great Travel Guide, Beautiful Coffee Table Book!
. Summary: Every Dorling Kindersley Guide has been a great and interesting book... and delightful to have and use, even if you are not traveling to that location, but are only interested in learning more! The Guides are well organized in a logical and easy to follow manner. They are beautifully illustrated, well developed with accurate information (it is unusual for hotel and restaurant ...

Small, but full of useful information :)
I visited NYC for the first time a few weeks ago. I took only three books about this city with me: this guide, the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". Truth to be told, this guide is probably the only one I couldn't have done without. "Top 10 New York" is an extremely useful small guide that doesn't have as much information as the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", ...

Finally! An American book about ordinary American servicemen.
From the time I opened "Radioman" I was hardly able to put it down. I was impressed by the fact that Radioman is not merely a sensationalized novel or an impersonal documentary offering--this singular book provides personal and vivid testimony of a real and ordinary American who lived through--and survived--the harrowing days of the World War II Pacific Theater. We are extremely fortunate ...

Compact, great pictures, well indexed. It won't scream "TOURIST" when you pull it out of your bag. I got this one and the Paris book. Used them exclusively. Barely opened the other ones I got.

(RAW Rating: 4.5) One of Many Long Hot Summers of the Sixties
IT WAS NEVER ABOUT A HOT DOG AND A COKE delivers the expected, and the unexpected, about one incident of many staged sit-ins across America, back when the vast majority of America's black citizens lived marginalized lives at the hands of racial hatred and Jim Crow laws. With boldness and forthrightness, Rodney L. Hurst Sr. tells the story of his own active involvement in the business at hand ...

A rookie heralist's "must have"
This is a wonderfully compact but complete, easy to use reference book. I bought one for my bookshelf and one to carry in the car for roadside identification of herbs. The color pictures are clear with all the pertinent details to make an accurate identification. Well worth the investment!
Eyewitness to America: 500 Years of America in the Words of Those Who Saw It Happen

Contemporary Accounts, By the Participants
What I loved about this particular book is that there isn't a historian in sight - nobody is writing it from the subjective slant of 50 (or 500) years' time - the accounts presented are from the diaries, letters and articles written by the people who actually took part in the events - a person on Columbus' crew, John Adams, the seconds at the Burr/Hamilton duel, etc. Spanning the time from ...

Definitive or not, this visual guide is truly a joy to behold
Dorling Kindersley have become well known for producing clear, visually oriented reference books for adults and children. They had previously published a score of smaller volumes on the subject of birds, but nothing quite like this: a definitive guide, as they claim. The book is best described as an encyclopaedia of birds. Measuring 30 x 25 cm (12" x 10") and weighing over 4.5 pounds, it has the ...

The BEST Book out there. Plain and Simple.
This is THE BOOK to get for your travels to Istanbul - or Constantinople to us Greek Orthodox :-) I used this book when I was there five years ago, and let me be frank: it got me around every street, every landmark, every side alleyway, every bus route, every boat ride. Absolutely the best book on the actual moment of the assination. All of these accounts have been published in other publications but this is the first book to have a compiliation of the most reliable accounts under one cover. If you are interested in Lincoln, his murder, doing a book report about the assination, this book is the bible of what happened at Fords Theater on April 14th 1865. ...
