Wener W.K. Hoeger, Sharon A. Hoeger

Brooks Cole, 2007

A good book to have, even if you're not taking the class!
I took the class that used this book last semester, and I really love this book. It's easy to read (although at times it goes into a little too much detail), doesn't sugar-coat anything, has great pictures, and has labs at the end of each chapter to help you apply the information. From proper nutrition to cancer prevention to strength training to STD prevention, this book has it all covered. I ...

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life15 reviews
Marilyn Moffat, Carole B. Lewis

Peachtree Publishers, 2006

Need a Tune-Up?
Just a great little book written by two physical therapists. The idea the book is based upon is that the antidote to aging is activity. So what kind of activity do you need? To answer this question, the book begins by having you evaluate your physical performance so you can identify those areas that you need the most work in. Thus, you complete five tests that assess your posture, strength, ...

ACSM's Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Manual2 reviews

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2007

A keeper
Industry standards are set by ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) and a few others. This book provides guidelines for Health/Fitness Assessments at a professional level. A good book to keep on the shelf for reference or to brush up your memories.

Anatomy for Strength and Fitness Training7 reviews
Mark Vella

McGraw-Hill, 2006

Very good reference
I find this book useful on two levels. On one level, I have used it to deepen my own knowledge and make sure that I am targeting where I wish. On another level, it has allowed me to show my teenage son exactly which muscles are being worked by which exercises. I like the author's emphasis on functional strength.

The Complete Guide to Navy Seal Fitness, Third Edition (Includes Free DVD): Updated for Today's Warrior Elite5 reviews
Stewart Usn (Seal) Smith

Hatherleigh Press, 2008

Fantastic fitness book if there ever was one
I have been using this book as my fitness guide for the past month and a half now. I am a former Marine so I know the essentials for fitness, however this book goes far beyond the standard work out. I found that I was pushing myself harder on his "intermediate" workout than on just about any other fitness program I've used. Whether you want to become a Navy SEAL or you just want to be in ...

101 Workouts for Women: Everything You Need to Get a Lean, Strong and Fit Physique14 reviews
Muscle & Fitness Hers Magazine

Triumph Books, 2008

It has what it has to have!
Excellent book! This is what I was looking for: open and do. The exercises are very creative, very good, the book has tips on every page and also at the end there is a full program for beginners. You can perfectly use the book to exercise at home or at the gym (I do both). I am not a beginner and I found lots of exercises I have not seen before, they break the routine of my workouts and stimulate ...

Fitness For Life4 reviews

Correct book for correspondence course
My daughter is taking a correspondence course from Texas Tech. The course is "Foundations in Personal Fitness", which she needs in order to graduate from high school. I am giving this book 5 stars because it is the correct book and edition required by Texas Tech, as of July 2005. I don't know how good the book is, but every few days she brings up something that she learned from this book.

Fredrick Hahn, Mary Dan Eades, ...

Broadway, 2002

Better than Pilates for losing inches when incorporated into a more traditional workout schedule.
I have waited years to review this book: I bought it five years ago with "The Power of Ten" when I was a professional Pilates instructor. At the time, I was 33, and working as a Pilates teacher in the busiest Pilates studio in the city--of which I was the owner. I did this program for three months without following the dietary recommendations other than cutting out bread and pasta. Clients ...

Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness1 review
Wener W.K. Hoeger, Sharon A. Hoeger

Brooks Cole, 2006

Fitness for Boredom
Experience with book: 30 days Pros: Well-illustrated, detailed, informative Cons: It's a fitness book I have little authority upon which to base this review, having barely read it for my 2 credit-hour course. I therefore have few negative or positive statements to make about it, except that it is a great resource for beginning a personal fitness program, or just staying educated on the ...
