Murder Under the Tuscan Night
As a rule, I don't care for serial killer books or films -- they just don't interest me the way "regular" crime stories do. Common motivations such as jealousy and greed, when handled well, can be more than powerful enough to sustain a character or drive a plot. The twisted psychoses of serial killers just don't do it for me. That said, this nonfiction account of a real life serial killer in ...
Florence Nightingale: The Making of an Icon
Mark Bostridge
Farrar, Straus and Giroux
, 2008
The common soldier?s savior, the standard-bearer of modern nursing, a pioneering social reformer: Florence Nightingale belongs to that select band of historical characters who are instantly recognizable. Home-schooled, bound for the life of an educated Victorian lady, Nightingale scandalized her family when she found her calling as a nurse, a thoroughly unsuitable profession for a woman of her class. As the ?Lady with the Lamp,? ministering to ...

Best Book of Tyler's Yet
I have purchased, or read at the library, every book Tyler Florence has put together, but this one is the best work he has done! The book is an easy read, none of the recipes are complicated - I think Tyler gets out of hand some times with his ingredients and processes - but this book is excellent. I especially like the more friendly approach to the book and he lets what I suspect is his ...

planning 5th trip to Italy
I have purchased several Streetwise for various cities. I found ALL of them to be useful. For Florence, it was particularly useful because the streets in Florence are narrow and not straight. You can easily get a bit lost - but not if you have the Streetwise map with you. You can use it to quickly get your location, and to see where the nearest piazza, church or museum is located. It also ...

a little hard to follow, but beautiful poetic writing
To start with, I envy anyone who can put together words in such a beautiful way. But I had a pretty hard time following the story. I really didn't care, though, because the writing was so beautiful. If you're someone who has to understand what is going on in every aspect of the story, you might be frustrated reading this. If you can get over it and just enjoy the writing and the parts you ...

great illustrations, so-so text
This book is worth its price for the superb illustrations. It has high-quality color illustrations of the most important Renaissance art, sculpture, and architecture, in Florence. They are a joy to look at and well selected. Of course, everything is not here--there is just too much fine art in this one city, so many masterpieces cannot be included. But it's a fine selection. The illustrations ...

Wish I would have read this when I was in my teens
Very easy reading, and it has a wealth of knowledge that is practical for everyone. When you're confused at times, this certainly brings me back to "balance".

Only wish I'd had more time
Yeah, doesn't everyone? There is so much in this book outside of Florence and I really wanted to make the trek into the Tuscan hills around the city, especially to Pisa and Siena. But alas, I was trapped in Florence...and what a prison it was! Everyone should find themselves thus abused at some point in their life, I believe. This DK guide made the punishment a lot easier to endure, saving me ...

AMAZING!
You cannot go to Florence without this book! I was in Florence for five days and I wore this book out; I ate exclusively at places from this book and have never had a better culinary experience in Florence! Emily Wise-Miller takes you to the hidden gems and out-of-the-way places that tourists dream about! Writing this review is making my mouth water and my heart beg to go back, just so I can eat ...

If you love Food 911 or Tyler's Ultimate, Buy this Book
To put this review into perspective for you it is written by someone that has been cooking for 25 years, and concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years. My favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" from the Culinary Institute of America. I would definitely consider myself a foodie. This book is part travel journal and part cookbook. This book doesn't concentrate on one county ...

This Book Changed My Life
I've read many great books on Law of Attraction, but this one explains how to create a life that you love better than any that I've read. This book is a gift to anyone who believes in Law of Attraction and wants to be able to do it for themselves.

This Book Is A Huge Surprise!
To me, next to Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa, Tyler's Ultimate is the best show on FOOD NETWORK. Don't know why it took me so long to purchase one of his cookbooks. But really worth the wait! You see a young Tyler in the photos, but the recipes are mature, well thought out, and beautifully photographed. This little treasure has something for everyone's tastebuds. The beauty of this book is ...

The inside scoop to Florence
This little book made the difference between a great trip to Florence and an "off-the-charts" fabulous adventure. It's filled with descriptions of tiny shops of every imaginable kind that you might never find on your own -- the best of the best, unique items, real craftsmen. There's 90 year old glove shop where they simply take one look at your hand, immediately know your size and can make the ...

An Informal Didatic
I was first informed of the works of 19th Century writer/teacher,Florence Scovel Shinn in 2007 and had planned to read The Florence Scovel Shinn Reader immediately. However, overwhelmed with the incidentals of writing, I again put off study time needed to devote to another metaphysical text. What a mistake! What a rewarding book!! As an author, I am aware of the arduous task of ...

Great giude for the traveler. Not a museum guidebook.
This book does not have pretty pictures or in-depth historical information about the sights, but there are plenty of books that do that. This book's strength is that it makes your trip easy, painless and enjoyable. In my recent trip to Florence (June 26-29) I did not have to wait in line at any of the museums/cathedrals/domes etc. which made the trip much more relaxing and enjoyable.
