The Story of Forgetting: A Novel14 reviews
Stefan Merrill Block

Random House, 2008

A marvelous and compelling read, filled with tragedy, humor and hope
Author Stefan Merrill Block's first novel is a tour de force of interconnecting lives, complete with the history of a family curse, fables about a land of no remembrance and scientific studies on Alzheimer's disease. Abel Haggard is an elderly hermit who lives in what was once his family's Texas farmhouse but is now a shack surrounded by McMansions, filled with owners who want to get rid of him. ...

Memory, History, Forgetting1 review
Paul Ricoeur

University Of Chicago Press, 2006

Best book on history so far this century
This, the last book written by the great French philosopher Paul Ricoeur, is an amazing achievement. Readers be warned: this is no easy romp through historiography or memory studies. It is a deeply philosophical meditation on the meaning of history and historicism as an act of remembering, an act of inscribing time, a way of participating in Being, and a way of negotiating competing claims for ...

Past Forgetting: My Love Affair with Dwight D. Eisenhower10 reviews
Kay Summersby Morgan, Barbara Wyden

Simon & Schuster, 1977

WHAT A DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE!
First, I must admit to not caring much for books by people who "hung around" famous people. In fact I, for the most part, despise them. They, the writers, either have an axe to grind, want money or crave attention. I did not find this to be so with this particular work. Due to the circumstances in which it was written, time lines, the author's impending death, etc. I found it to be none of ...

Seeing Is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees: Expanded Edition
Lawrence Weschler

University of California Press, 2009

When this book first appeared in 1982, it introduced readers to Robert Irwin, the Los Angeles artist "who one day got hooked on his own curiosity and decided to live it." Now expanded to include six additional chapters and twenty-four pages of color plates, Seeing Is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees chronicles three decades of conversation between Lawrence Weschler and light and space master Irwin. It surveys many of Irwin's ...

The Forgetting: Alzheimer's: Portrait of an Epidemic35 reviews
David Shenk

Anchor, 2003

This book is tops!
I have read a lot about Alzheimer's but this is definitely one of the best. It is easy to read with good illustrations of Alzheimer's onset in persons such as Ronald Reagan. Shenk's comparison of a baby's growth with Alzheimer's decline illustrates the heartbreak for those caring for someone with this disease. I highly recommend this book to professionals as well as laypeople.

The Book of Learning and Forgetting10 reviews
Frank Smith

Teachers College Press, 1998

A book must remembering!
This book is a must read. The book offers a more philosophical, theoretical perspective on learning, contrary to mainstream, contemporary educational thought and practice.

Seeing Is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees: A Life of Contemporary Artist Robert Irwin12 reviews
Lawrence Weschler

University of California Press, 1982

still forgetting
I picked up this book in 1984 because it was on a reading list for an Art History class I was taking at Oberlin College. I stayed up all night in the library that night. I couldn't put it down. My mind has never been the same. I still often think of it,tell stories from it and give it as a gift. I always say "skip the first chapter-it gets much better." If I remember right, the book begins ...

Against Forgetting: Twentieth-Century Poetry of Witness8 reviews

W. W. Norton & Company, 1993

"I stand as witness ...
to the common lot, / survivor of that time, that place." Anna Akhmatova, one of the poets included in this anthology, wrote those words in the years before WWII as she struggled to survive, and express, life under Stalin. Carolyn Forche has assembled this collection of poems, each of which expresses, in their own time and place, witness. This is not an idle witness, a standing by, a cool, ...

The Book of Laughter and Forgetting55 reviews
Milan Kundera

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 1999

Classic, devastating
THE BOOK OF LAUGHTER AND FORGETTING is a sophisticated work of art. An amalgam of experimental fiction, straightforward storytelling, magical realism and metafiction, it successfully grapples with bigger than big themes, portraying the crucible that was Czechoslovakia after the Russian invasion in 1968 and before the dissolution of the Soviet empire. Kundera makes this tall order work in prose ...

Betrayal Trauma: The Logic of Forgetting Childhood Abuse9 reviews
Jennifer J. Freyd

Harvard University Press, 1998

Uncommon Objectivity
Because of her parents attacks on Dr. Freyd, I'd expected to find some of her justifible anger in the pages of this book. I did not. Dr. Freyd is logical, objective, and professional in her handling of this sensitive subject. She adds a somewhat new perspective to the old story of sexual abuse and betrayal. An excellent addition to any therapist's or survivor's library.

Waikiki: A History of Forgetting & Remembering
Gaye Chan

University of Hawaii Press, 2006

"Waikiki: A History of Forgetting and Remembering" presents a compelling cultural and environmental history of the area, exploring its place not only in the popular imagination, but also through the experiences of those who lived there. Employing a wide range of primary and secondary sources - including historical texts and photographs, government documents, newspaper accounts, posters, advertisements, and personal interviews - an artist and a ...

Forgetting Lot's Wife: On Destructive Spectatorship
Martin Harries

Fordham University Press, 2007

Can looking at disaster and mass death destroy us? Forgetting Lot?s Wife provides a theory and a fragmentary history of destructive spectatorship in the twentieth century. Its subject is the notion that the sight of historical catastrophe can destroy the spectator. The fragments of this history all lead back to the story of Lot?s wife: looking back at the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, she turns into a pillar of salt. This ...

Silence on the Mountain: Stories of Terror, Betrayal, and Forgetting in Guatemala (American Encounters/Global ...19 reviews
Daniel Wilkinson

Duke University Press, 2004

you must read this book
time and again i let myself be surprised by the atrocious acts committed or supported by my government. the hypocricy of the CIA and of US foreign policy in general is nothing new, but this book tells guatemala's story from a very personal angle. the repressive practices of the post-50's guatemalan government are shocking and important to understand in and of themselves, along with the US ...

101 Really Important Things You Already Know, But Keep Forgetting3 reviews
Ernie J. Zelinski

Ten Speed Press, 2007

The best book I have ever read............
101 Important Things You Already Knew But Keep Forgetting is one of the best inspirational books I have ever read. I bought 4 copies of these books as presents for the people in my life. The stories are short(two pages) and tell life like it is. This book is better than therapy! There is not one page of this book that doesn't have meaning to everyone's personal life experiences.

Forgetting Ourselves on Purpose: Vocation and the Ethics of Ambition5 reviews
Brian J. Mahan, Robert Coles

Jossey-Bass, 2002

More Than Five Stars!
This is a fantastic book, not so much because it tells you how to resolve the tension between ambition and vocation, but because it accompanies you on the journey of working through these preoccupations yourself. You will not find any "5 Easy Steps to Success" here nor will find any "How to Find God's Will For Your Life." Rather you will find a philosopher who walks with us the razor's edge ...

Forgetting the Hurt, Remember the Hope: A Memoir of Endurance1 review
Sandee Carlisle

Outskirts Press, 2008

A Path to Follow
This is the story of the path that my family and I have been following for the past 28 years. It begins with the loss of a special man and continues to the happiness we have been able to find in the face of tragedy. It shows that the spirit is indomitable and cannot be destroyed if we refuse to allow it. It may bring tears, but the overriding message is one of hope.

Stop Forgetting to Remember: The Autobiography of Walter Kurtz3 reviews
Peter Kuper

Crown, 2007

Hilarious and poignant
With wonderful art and terrific writing, Kuper's memoir speaks to everyone who grew up in the age of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll who now finds themselves dealing with parenthood, love, and career. It's a book that's funny and moving, deep and original.
