One of the GREATEST horse stories of all time!
I couldn't believe that no one had reviewed this marvelous book! This is simply one of the greatest horse books ever written, and a treasure of my horse-mad girlhood. The pictures--you have to get a copy with the gorgeous illustrations--are dramatic, romantic, and realistic, like the most moving of mid 19th Century art. (Think of "The Horse Fair.") This is the story of the so-called Godolphin ...

Horse lover's review
This is a facinating account of the origins of the thorobred horse. It recounts the Goldolphin Arabian's birth and takes you on a exotic trip through history. Pictures are vidid in the descriptions of the era and the excitement of those times. I have always been intrigued by the horse and even more so after reading this great book.

This work is the firs scholarly biography of Sidney Godolphin in over one hundred years, and thus fills a gaping hole in the history of late Stuart England. How Godolphin used his position to mold English diplomacy and military strategy is examined.

The rich moonlight that now shone through the windows streamed on little that it could invest with poetical attraction. The room was small, though not squalid in its character and appliances. The bed-curtains, of a dull chintz, were drawn back, and showed the form of a man, past middle age, propped by pillows, and bearing on his countenance the marks of approaching death.
Transformations of Love: The Friendship of John Evelyn and Margaret Godolphin
Frances Harris
Oxford University Press, USA
, 2004
John Evelyn ranks with his friend Samuel Pepys as one of the best loved of English diarists. This is an absorbing new study of the most controversial episode of his life: his passionate "seraphic" friendship with Margaret Godolphin, a maid of honor at the Restoration court of Charles II. Set against the vivid background of the court and the great gardens of the time, Transformations of Love provides new insights into the sexual and spiritual ...
