Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy Revised and Updated

Excellent book!
I think absolutely anyone could benefit from reading this book. It makes clear the link between our thoughts and our moods and gives concrete methods for conciously changing the thought patterns that lead to self-destructive feelings and actions. And unlike many self-help books, it isn't dry or preachy; it's easy to read and well worth the time. If you're depressed, PLEASE buy this book - it ...

I'm still trying to discern what the funniest aspect of this book is. Is it the blatant elitism/classicsm? Perhaps. Is it Wall Street's misogyny and generalizations of foreigners? There's definitely something there. Perhaps its LSO's ability to apply banker-speak and concepts to everyday life? That plays a role no doubt. Or maybe it's simply everything about the LSO including the aforementioned ...

If You Are Going to Read This Book . . .
This book does exactly what the author intended: It creates a picture of the Chinese culture right before the arrival of the revolution, providing a view of a world quite different from our own. I have read several of the negative reviews, and my advice is, if you cannot for one moment let go of your attitude that the only right way is the way we do it now--the Christian American way--then you're ...

Fantastic read!
I chose to read this book because my Dad was diagnosed with Brain cancer and i found it to be extremely helpful, without being too 'religious'. I am not a church person, but i do believe in God. This book just seemed to wrap it's arm around me and let me think and feel exactly as i needed to, without offering any of that unhelpful help that others tend to, without thinking their words through ...

Excellent companion addressing not-for-profits' unique needs
Jim Collins is the author of "Good to Great," an influential business and leadership book. In the time since the publication of the book, Collins realized that there exist points of disconnect within the book for leaders of not-for-profit agencies (e.g. churches, local charitable organizations, groups that exist for specific causes like disease eradication or the advancement of art). In an ...

Twelve High-Impact "Starfish"
After completing five years of rigorous and extensive research on 1,435 "Fortune 500" companies during a 30-year period (1965-1995), Jim Collins and his associates selected only eleven that met their admittedly "very tough standards" for greatness. (Note: Collins also wrote Good to Great and the Social Sectors: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great, published four years later.) Leslie ...

A Critical Analysis of the Feeling Good Handbook
Abstract The following study investigates the text, The Feeling Good Handbook, by David Burns. Specifically addressed are issues regarding the cognitive-behavioral model of twisted thinking, moral relativism, and the denial of objective truth. It was found that the text provides an inadequate definition and application regarding moral and objective truth issues. Recommendations for revision of ...

No good, Very bad, DAY!
This is a childhood favorite of mine explaining the life of a child who is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day! He goes through why he is having this terrible day and at the ending there is a little surprise. Very good for younger children, even some older children. Great to read in a classroom!

Nobel Prize quality
This book is intellectually dazzling and of critical importance. It demolishes all the ideas of nutrition and health we are being fed by the current crop of 'experts'. Mr Taubes demolishes the high fat theory once and for all and points out sugar causes diabetes. Fat is by and large irrelevant. A little fat, a lot of fat, heaps of fat, no fat. It doesn't matter. The author quietly and efficiently ...

What a nice change!
Unlike most self-help books out there, this one is actually based on research for a change. Based on this Phd's work on how people change, this guy has uncovered the different, predictable stages of change that people go through when they attempt to get themselves to change. Although the stages are fairly predictable, not everybody goes through them in the exact same order as some people skip ...

Truly excellent!
Winner of the 2008 Newberry Medal, Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! was actually written to be performed. Laura Amy Schlitz has written here a series of interconnected monologues and dialogues which, taken together, depict the life of kids of all kinds in a medieval village. There's the Falconer's Son, the Blacksmith's Daughter, the runaway villein, the Young Lord, The Pilgrim and The Sniggler, all of ...

don't get a dog without reading this first
A comprehensive dog owners manual! I read through this manual before getting our first dog last week and it proved to be invaluable. We have followed it's instructions to a "t" and our puppy is house trained in one week with no accidents. She sleeps through the night (and has since day 1) in her crate and is already learning simple commands. The book hits home the need to have a schedule, be ...

Better Than Goodnight Moon
Opposed to other reviews, my personal opinion is that Good Night Gorilla is better than Goodnight Moon (although both are great bedtime stories). Funny and filled with great illustrations, Good Night Gorilla is a charming reader. My sons just love it. Another bedtime story I'd recommend and they love is Ladybug Baby Bug, by Janice and Mark Perkins.

"Everything Bad" is middling
Steven Johnson is a man with a mission. He begins his book with a quote from conservative columnist George Will, who complains that modern culture is abysmally stupid and is "infantilizing" our children. Johnson vigorously disagrees. His thesis is that computer games, TV, movies, and the internet are actually making us smarter. "Everything Bad is Good for You" is divided into two parts, the ...

Armageddon Has Arrived....and it's Hilarious!
"God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time." "Am I throwing the baby out with the bath water?" That question was keeping me awake nights. Let's face it, whether to end it or stay will impact every, single day for the rest of your life. You wouldn't be reading this book if you weren't having serious relationship problems, but let's be honest, you wouldn't be confused if the relationship were 100% bad. I think it is natural to think of ...
