The Coast Guard9 reviews

Foundation for Coast Guard History, 2004

Its about time!
The other services came out with a similar book years ago. Every time I walk into a book store I immediately go to the military section with the hope of finding this book waiting for me on the shelf. I always left feeling disappointed. This book retails for about 75 bucks. Some may say that is too high a price for a book, I say it is worth every penny. Semper Paratus.

Classical Northern Wu Style Tai Ji Quan: The Fighting Art of the Manchurian Palace Guard12 reviews
Tina Zhang, Frank Allen

Blue Snake Books, 2006

Thorough, complete and compelling
On the bookshelves of the martial arts section there are few books that can truly be called thorough and complete. The "Classical Northern Wu Style Tai Ji Quan" by Tina Zhang and Frank Allen in one of these few. The history section is a concise look at the history of Tai Ji Quan from the perspective of the northern Wu style school. Instead of just regurgitating the usual legends, it tells an ...

Lifeboat Sailors: Disasters, rescues, and the Perilous Future of the Coast Guard's Small Boat Stations12 reviews
Dennis L. Noble

Brassey's Inc, 2000

Easy-reading, but very eye-opening and inspiring
Although the book was a nice, easy read, I was involved to the point where I couldn't put it down and wanted to know more about the Coast Guard. These men and women of the small lifeboat stations are true heroes. Thanks to Dennis Noble for telling their history and story. I was inspired so much by the desire to become a part of such an amazing tradition and responsibility that I visited my ...

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Master Techniques: The Essential Guard (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Master Techniques series)15 reviews
Kid Peligro, Rodrigo Medeiros

Invisible Cities Press Llc, 2005

the title says it all
this is the essential book for the beginner or intermediate BJJ player. it is likely the best BJJ book out there because it pays quality attention to the nuances of the GUARD and you will not get that at every jiujitsu school. without fundamental knowledge of the proper body positioning required to execute guard techniques, youre going nowhere. futhermore, no matter how good you are as a 'top' ...

Passing the Guard: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques: Volume 1 (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) (Brazilian Jiu ...25 reviews
Beneville Ed

Grappling Arts Publications, L.L.C., 2003

Great Study on an Important Facet of Groundfighting
Too many books try to cover too much in their text. This often results in poor details, a small snapshot of someone's game, or unconnected techniques that don't integrate well. It is a fantastic idea to spend an entire volume on one aspect of the game. I'd read Cartmell's good work in "Effortless Combat Throws" and liked it a lot. I'd never heard of Beneville, though, as per most of the ...

Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul: 101 Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit of Hope, Healing ...48 reviews
Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, ...

HCI, 2002

AWESOME!
I purchased this book for my husband and he had written me several times quoting passages from it and told me he wished I had a copy so we could discuss it together. With that said, I purchased an additional copy and read it in one day. My son walked by and saw and me tearing up and asked what I was reading and I read him the except. We continued reading them together out loud. He too cried. ...

Devil's Guard53 reviews
George R. Elford

Delta, 1995

Some never knew
To a soldier conflict and combat are the mainstay of his vocation and profession after a certain point the victor and vanquished become little more than facts to be minded by the history keepers (usually the victors) and refered too by the participants in abbreviated rhetoric and broken dialogs. The author has done the reader a great service in the delivery of this redition of the activities and ...

Coast Guard Action in Vietnam: Stories of Those Who Served11 reviews
Paul C. Scotti

PSI Research, 2000

Been there, done that!
I am a CG Vietnam veteran having served aboard the CG Cutter Chase, CG Squadron 3 in 1969-70. Paul Scotti's book is the definitive book about the CG operations in Vietnam. Paul gets you up front and personal to the point you can smell the smoke and hear the gunfire. His book vividly describes the everyday life of a Coastie in Vietnam be it on the water, in the air or at the base and will touch ...

The Guard (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques) (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques)8 reviews
Joe Moreira; Ed Beneville

Grappling Arts Publications, LLC, 2005

In Depth Treatment of Guard, for Intermediate Grapplers (with Gi)
As with "Passing the Guard", no other book focuses on the bjj guard so much, with so much details. The paper is cheaper and the pictures are darker than those in the first volume ("Passing the Guard"), but the page count increased and the content is still high guality, if not higher. I'm a bjj blue belt and I like this book a lot, but it's not an easy book to use. You have to study it, choose ...

Anne French

BookSurge Publishing, 2007

Perfect Christmas gift!
I can not recommend this book more highly. It not only gives expert advice for every potentially awkward situation, but it also is filled with the author's original art. I'm giving this book to several of my friends for Christmas!

The Coast Guardsman's Manual9 reviews
George E. Krietemeyer

US Naval Institute Press, 2000

Great book for all
I am in the Coast Guard myself and when I was in boot camp they even handed out copies of this book to us to learn what we needed to know about the USCG. It covers everything from a brief history to customs and courtesies and to Maritime Law Enforcement. It talks about the different knots we use and how to properly tie the knot. There's history on the USCG's uniforms and the different ships we ...

Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard8 reviews
Henri Lachouque

Greenhill Books, 2006

a work of unquestionable quality
The glory of the Imperial Guard resounds above all others in the annals of war. Created, built and nurtured as a bodyguard for Napoleon, it grew from a brigade of fewer than two thousand men into a virtual army, and became 'a human fortress which no one but [Napoleon] could dominate and no enemy could penetrate'. And, on such battlefields as Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland, Wagram and Waterloo, it ...

The Waffen SS: Hitler's Elite Guard at War, 1939-459 reviews
George H. Stein

Cornell University Press, 1984

Elite warriors, brutal murderers - deserving of both titles
"Waffen SS-Hitler's Elite Guard at War, 1939-1945" by George H. Stein is a fabulous work of historical literature. Many an author, popular and academic, has tackled the topic of the SS and Waffen SS but very few have done so in an objective fashion like Stein. Far too many presentations of the Waffen SS have been from apologist and revisionist authors who fail to recognize and/or admit the ...

Guards! Guards!7 reviews
Terry Pratchett

Roc, 1991

The best yet . . .
Pterry here has managed to be not only funny but serious. Carrot comes across a bit too stereotypically, but Vimes is the most human of the characters, indeed one of the most human of teh series. There are indeed Tolkien references, (and also Casablanca! Note the flickering sign outside Vimes's window - so traditional it's very hard to leave out, but stil . . . ) Lady Ramkin is still a tad flat ...

Gaunt's Ghosts: The Saint (Gaunt's Ghosts)7 reviews
Dan Abnett

Games Workshop, 2007

Great book....missing pages
Is it just me, or does it seem weird that my copy of the book is missing 49 pages? Pages 880 to page 929 are missing. It says here that the book has 1024 pages.....so does mine, except that 49 pages are missing. I'm wondering if anybody else has seen this problem? Or do I have the "worth some money mess up book"?

Native Guard8 reviews
Natasha Trethewey, 2008

A thought provoking read.
As I read these poems, each offers a an insight which calls me to visualize the scenes that are portrayed. I've reread several passages to confirm their impact. This book is great example of powerful modern poetry. I'll recommend it to many. it offers a profound mix of history and personal experience. Trethewey reveals her life and thoughts fearlessly.

Dead Men Tapping : The End of the Heather Lynn II7 reviews
Kate Yeomans

International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press, 2003

Dead Men Tapping: The End of the Heather Lynne II
This book was awesome. Ms. Yeomans writes a terrific story that will have you sitting back totally buried in the story she tells. Having had many friends and acquaintances in the fishing industry who have had similar experiences, most of them fatal, I can only surmise that the entire United States Coast Guard needs to be revamped, all its employees trained, and that the Guard MUST be held ...
