The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness34 reviews
J. Mark G. Williams, John D. Teasdale, ...

The Guilford Press, 2007

Waking Up to Your Life Again: A Brilliant Guide to Understanding Depression
I was actually led to seek out information on meditation as a treatment for depression through a book called Surviving America's Depression Epidemic by psychologist Bruce E. Levine. That book takes a highly insightful approach to investigating the sociological and personal genesis for depression and I credit it for saving me from succumbing to this condition. Afterwards, I bought "The Mindful Way ...

DSM-IV Made Easy: The Clinician's Guide to Diagnosis18 reviews
James Morrison

Guilford Press, 1995

Awesome book
I bought this book after it was suggested by one of professors in my M.A. in Counseling Psychology program. It is very helpful for the begining clinician in making a diagnosis and it also provides examples of clients with the particular disorders in order to demonstrate a clear picture of what the presenting features are like.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Basic Principles, Protocols, and Procedures, 2nd Edition10 reviews
Francine Shapiro

The Guilford Press, 2001

Recommend!
Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR. I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read. Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments. Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

Ethnicity and Family Therapy (Guilford Family Therapy Series, The)19 reviews

The Guilford Press, 1982

Ethnicity and Family Therapy 3rd edition Review
I believe this book is vitally important to anyone in the field of Social Work. I have found it to be extremely helpful in getting to know a little more about some of cultural belief of the client I've been working with. I have also gotten their individual perspectives from just asking them a little about their cultural belief systems as they interupt them for themselves.

The Guilford Press, 2007

Covers the field of AT
This is an outstanding collection by the main thinkers in AT and a must reference for anyone working in the field. It is not always easy reading but a more overall coverage of the subect from start to present will be hard to find.

Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology: 1996/1997 Edition14 reviews
John C. Norcross, Michael A. Sayette, ...

The Guilford Press, 1996

Get This to Get In
For anyone interested in clincal or counseling graduate study, this book is essential. These areas are extremely competitive and one cannot go into the process "blind." The general APA guide can be useful, but it covers many areas and mainly gives the basic facts on all programs. On the other hand, this book is very specialized. It gives information on the programs, but also includes invaluable ...

Essential Skills in Family Therapy: From the First Interview to Termination11 reviews
JoEllen Patterson, Lee Williams, ...

The Guilford Press, 1998

Book review
Essential Skills in Family Therapy is a guide of the process of therapy to be used by those learning how to do therapy. The book is also a good refresher for practicing therapists. Chapters cover topics from the beginning of therapy through termination and include special issues like working with children and adolescents. Getting started The developmental stages of new therapists are ...

Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process16 reviews
Nancy McWilliams

The Guilford Press, 1994

A New Level of Understanding
Briefly, this book has given me a new level of understanding of my clients -- sadly one I never got in my cognitive-behavioral oriented graduate school. There is a richness and depth that, in my experience, is astonishing to find in one author. E.g., I had little clue to what goes on in the mind and heart of someone with a diagnosis antisocial/psychopathic personality, or how one could reach ...

My therapist works with one of the authors and suggested this book to help me in my recovery from childhood sexual abuse and becoming more knowlegeable about my own sexuality. It is a definite recommendation for ...

Making the System Work for Your Child with ADHD (Making the System Work for Your Child)14 reviews
Peter S. Jensen

The Guilford Press, 2004

Excellent Guide for Parents trying to get organized and deal with ADHD issues
I have read numerous books and articles on ADHD to become as informed as possible on my son's ADHD. Most make me feel better by realizing I am not alone in my struggle to parent a child with this disorder. This book went beyond making me feel better and gave me practical guidance to get organized and be proactive when dealing with teachers and my son's school. I now have an accordian file with ...

James Lock, Daniel le Grange

The Guilford Press, 2005

Gets to the point!!
This book is such a relief!! Unlike other books that go on and on about what eating disorders are and their causes and types and so on, this book actually tells you how to act. It tells you exactly how to deal with your teenager and how to behave around them.

Friedman's Fables9 reviews
Edwin H. Friedman

The Guilford Press, 1990

A Brilliant Work
Ed Friedman provided his readers and students with more than information about the human condition. He has given them a way to think, not just what to think. This book of fables, as the study booklet that accompanies it makes clear, is about life questions. A great deal of what one can know about life and self depends upon (a) where one stands when asking questions, and (b) the clarity and ...

Internal Family Systems Therapy8 reviews
Richard C. Schwartz

The Guilford Press, 1997

PsyD Student
I first heard of Internal Family Systems theory from another book and found that I connected with this type of therapy immediately. I then ordered this book and found that it was easy to understand and yet had a profound theoretical basis that I could apply not only to my clients but to my own life as well. This book gave a clear and convincing view of IFS. I strongly recommend it for students, ...

Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders, Third Edition: A Step-by-Step Treatment Manual7 reviews

The Guilford Press, 2001

Although pricey, comprehensive and worth the money.
I am currently using this book as a supplemental text for a course in Psychopathology I am taking at Cleveland State University. The explanations of the various disorders are sometimes dense for the beginning graduate student, yet there is much to learn as each chapter not only discusses the etiology, but also various treatment approaches for each illness. Would I recommend this book? Depends ...

Handbook of Emotion Regulation8 reviews

The Guilford Press, 2006

An essential volume
The field of emotion regulation is a difficult one to adequately cover, because it impinges on so many aspects of life, and is such a critical but little understood part of what it means to be human. Until now, there has been no really good, single source for those wanting to educate themselves on what is known about when and how we control our emotions and when and how they control us. Although ...

Take Back Your Marriage: Sticking Together in a World That Pulls Us Apart10 reviews
William J. Doherty

Superbly helpful
I think the most important part of this book was the fundamental hopefulness about what might feel like a hopeless situation.

The Guilford Press, 2007

AWESOME!! A MUST HAVE FOR PARENTS OF BP TEENS!!!
I CANNOT recommend this book strongly enough! If you have a BP teen or soon-to-be teen DEFINATELY buy this book! Such questions as "is it BP or is it regular obstinate teen?", IEPs, social anxiety, medications, different therapies for different teens, etc. This book covers it ALL! Easy to read and understand. Many "if this scenerio than use this technique" type descriptions as well. This book ...

Cognitive Therapy of Personality Disorders8 reviews
Aaron T. Beck, Arthur Freeman

The Guilford Press, 1990

Fantastic
This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy. Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well. On the other hand, the treatment of narcissistic ...

Child Abuse and Culture: Working with Diverse Families9 reviews
Lisa Aronson Fontes

The Guilford Press, 2005

Excellent choice for graduate students preparing to work in schools
Dr. Lisa Aronson Fontes has written a unique and extremely helpful book that is a must read for anyone who works with children and families. I had my graduate students in school counseling read and discuss the book this past year and they found it to be extremely practial, enlightening and applicable to their work. It really engaged and challenged them and sparked an extremely rich and useful ...
