A Very Young Gymnast7 reviews

Alfred A. Knopf, 1978

Very nice!
This is a wonderful book about gymnastics. It has lots of pictures. It's about a 10 year old gymnast who has aspirations to be in the olympics. It shows how she trains. The pictures are in black & white. Not only does it contains pictures of her, but also other gymnasts are here also. Nadia, Bart Conner & Kurt Thomas and more. First published in 1978, it's a little dated-but it shows gymnastics ...

Letters to a Young Gymnast (Art of Mentoring)11 reviews
Nadia Comaneci

Basic Books, 2003

Letters to a Young Gymnast: Nadia Comaneci
Since I was a gymnast for many, many years, I have read quite a few gymnastics books, but none had impressed me too much until I read this one. Perhaps it is because Nadia not only talked about her gymnastics, but also about the conditions and struggles of life in Communist Romania. It is not only a biography, but also historical as well. The book was very clear and easy to read, so younger ...

I Want to Be a Gymnast (DK READERS)2 reviews
Kate Simkins

DK CHILDREN, 2006

My daughter enjoyed this book
I bought this book for my 6 year old budding gymnast and she really enjoyed it. She could read it by herself and the "workout" described in the book was really similar to the workout she receives at her gymnastics class. I would recommend this book.

Little Girls in Pretty Boxes: The Making and Breaking of Elite Gymnasts and Figure Skaters140 reviews
Joan Ryan

Grand Central Publishing, 2000

A real eye opener
I got this book years ago. As the mother of a competitive ice skater I WAS INTERESTED in reading about skaters and gymnasts at the elete level. I was so shocked to read how our national gymastics team was trained. The story of Julissa Gomez was heart-breaking to read. No child deserves that. If any parent is thinking of enrolling their daughter in gymnastics I would highly recomend this book.

Landing on My Feet: A Diary of Dreams21 reviews
Kerri Strug, John P. Lopez

Andrews Mcmeel Pub, 1997

Wonderful!
This is definitely the best gymnasics biography I've read! In this book, published right after the 1996 Olympics, Kerri really opens her heart to the reader...we learn about her passion for gymnasics which started at a VERY young age, her progression through the sport, what it was really like training under Bela Karolyi, and about her family. One thing that impressed me about Kerri was how she ...

The Greatest Gymnast of All (MathStart 1)1 review
Stuart J. Murphy

HarperTrophy, 1998

Your girls will love this book
There's something quite spellbinding about this book about Zoe, "The Greatest Gymnast of All." The illustrations are colorful and energetic. The text (with simple demonstrations of opposites) is rollicking fun: "On and off, short and long. I do it all 'cause I'm so strong. I'm zipping, zooming Zoe." My 2 1/2-year-old daughter wants this one again and again. She even mimics the actions of the ...

Carly Patterson (Amazing Athletes)1 review
Jeff Savage

LernerSports, 2005

brief guide of a truly gifted athlete
Carly Patterson is arguably one of the strongest and most confident young gymnasts that the United States has ever seen. She is an image of a classic American teenage gymnast, and her confidence in what she does is clearly one of her most distinctive traits. Is is this that helped her win that Olympic title at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens at age 16. Now almost 18 years old, Ms. Patterson seems ...

Shannon Miller: My Child, My Hero19 reviews
Claudia Ann Miller, Gayle White

University of Oklahoma Press, 1999

For a Shannon Fan
I enjoyed this book when it first came out, and at twenty six years of age, I still read it. Her mother did a fantastic job of filling in the time spent off the camera between competitions. This is not like other gymnast biographies that just relay the information we can see on television. This really explains Shannon's feelings, her struggles and personal victories. If you are looking for a ...

Carly Patterson: Olympic Idol3 reviews
Susan Valentine

Razorbill, 2004

Good book, but nothing I hadn't heard before
This book is basicly a compliation of all the articles that have been written about Carly Patterson up to the 2004 American Cup. As a long time gymnastics fan, I found this book included no information that I had not already heard. That being said...it is a good book, dispite the fact that it was written before the Olympics. It includes some fine photos, and for people who like to collect ...

The Magnificent Seven: The Authorized Story of American Gold22 reviews
N.H. Kleinbaum

Delacorte Books for Young Readers, 1996

This has got to be one of the best books ever
This book is what really got me interested in gymnastics. I had gotten introduced to gymnastics through a book about Mary Lou Retton I had picked up at a thrift store, but I didn't become too interested until I saw a picture of Kim Zmeskal in an Encyclopedia Annual. I looked her up on the Internet, and the rest they say is history. Through the Internet I discovered the Magnificent Seven, and I ...
