The best web hacking book today
I just finished reading Hacking Exposed Web Apps and was coming back to Amazon to fwd the recommendation to a friend who is a CSO at a Fortune 500 firm when I stumbled upon the review from hermie. I have to say that I disagree completely with hermie's assessment, and felt compelled enough to say so in print! First of all, the book does cover a number of web platforms besides IIS -- it's the only ...

A Digest of the New World of Hack Attacks
What struck me about this book is that the attacks are all brand new. This isn't just a rehash of the same old attacks we read about over and over again, nor is it a rehash of the attacks - but on steroids - from the previous Hacker's Challenge books. The day of the simple port scan and null session enumeration are long gone. Today's world is much more complicated and scarier. Hacker's ...

Challenging!
Hacker's Challenge is a must have for every computer forensics. The scenarious given are indeed technically challenging and I like the fact that the complexity of attack, prevention, and mitigation are already specified. It is also very helpful as it make references to external resources that contain more info about a particular specified vulnerabilities. The log files, network maps, etch are ...

A great Hacking Exposed and VoIP security book
Hacking Exposed: VoIP (HE:V) is the sort of HE book I like. It's fashionable to think HE books are only suitable for script kiddies who run tools they don't understand against vulnerable services they don't recognize. I like HE books because the good ones explain a technology from a security standpoint, how to exploit it, and how to defend it. I thought HE:V did well in all three areas, even ...

Hacking exposed: excellent books
This is a general comment regarding Hacking Exposed series. I owned Hacking Exposed (first edition) and then I moved to the more specific Hacking Exposed books, so now I've got Hacking Linux Exposed, Hacking Windows 2000 Exposed and hacking web Applications exposed. All those books absolutely worth it, do not hesitate to buy any of them.

The best hands-on Linux security book just got better
I'm a big fan of the Hacking Exposed style of writing. All offensive theory is backed up by command line examples, followed by defensive countermeasures. Hacking Exposed: Linux, 2nd Ed (HE:L2E) follows this tradition, updating the content of the first edition and adding 200 pages of new content. Although I reviewed the first edition in Sep 01, reading the second edition reminded me of the ...

Great Overall View of the Situation
I think that it is difficult, perhaps impossible, to build a modern network that does include at least some Cisco equipment. Following the general set up rules in the various manuals produce a system architecture that is generally considered to be at least reasonably secure. Basically this book may well change your mind on just how secure your Cisco system really is. As the major supplier of ...

Excellent Resource for Windows Server 2003 Admins
Hacking Exposed- Windows Server 2003 is the latest addition to the Hacking Exposed series of books. Joel Scambray and Stuart McClure have teamed up to create another excellent source of information to help you understand the weaknesses in your Windows Server 2003 system and what you can do to defend against them. It may not be quite as gripping as a John Grisham novel, but the Hacking Exposed ...

The best book to start your Web application hacking experience
I recently received copies of Hacking Exposed: Web Applications, 2nd Ed (HE:WA2E) by Joel Scambray, Mike Shema, and Caleb Sima, and Professional Pen Testing for Web Applications (PPTFWA) by Andres Andreu. I read HE:WA2E first, then PPTFWA. Both are excellent books, but I expect potential readers want to know which is best for them. I could honestly recommend readers buy either (or both) books. ...

Excellent Explanations -- Very Easy to Use
I work on the security team in a large company and use this as a key reference when working investigations. We're understaffed, and investigations isn't my only focus. When I found out about this book I was excited about the familiar look and feel of a series I've humbly learned much from. IMHO, this book is an outstanding compliment to the arsenal of tools I use when I'm asked to help with ...

Security for advanced Java developers
The book uses an example Java application which is intially very unsecure, and throughout the book the vulnerabilities of the example are discussed and countermeasures are written. Then the application is webenabled, creating new vulnerabilities which are fixed again, and so on. This way the complex material is covered in an easy accessible yet comprehensive way, without becoming lengthy. This ...

I simply loved this book
This book is a must for every Admin out there. I would also recommend this book to IT managers/directors/etc. This book is more than just an explaination of security holes/fixes but puts you into the mind of the cracker. You must see the world as the cracker does in order to defend yourself. In Patton, Patton was shouting "I read your book" to Rommel as he beat Rommel in a tank battle. This is ...

I strongly recommend it for the beginner as well as the seasoned Information Security Professional.

Great Book. Focused, Concise, and To the Point
The book is a practical guide where every topic is covered completely and succinctly. It does not waste your time with fluff and focuses on cutting edge issues related to Web 2.0 security. This book is not meant to be the end-all for web security. As the title states, it is focused on Web 2.0. If you are an experienced security professional and are looking for a book which will get you up to ...

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me..
With all the hype currently being generated about digital piracy, I decided it might be interesting to read Software Piracy Exposed by Paul Craig and Mark Burnett. Craig spent some time working himself into a position of trust with a number of significant players in the piracy ...

Solid but not exceptional
When I read and reviewed Wi-Foo: The Secrets of Wireless Hacking three years ago, I was really impressed. Wi-Foo is obviously showing its age now, but a second edition is in the works. I was excited to see Hacking Exposed: Wireless (HE:W), green cover and all, because I hoped it would be just as good as Wi-Foo but covering newer topics. Overall I think the next Wi-Foo will be better than HE:W, ...

First time not disappointed
This is the first time that I'm not disappointed at all after buying a new edition of a Hacking Exposed book. Yes, it is not a rehash of the 2nd edition. What's wrong about that? Combining the concepts of OSSTMM and Hacking Exposed was a wonderful idea. It's an excellent starting point for both students and professionals. I wish we would see more innovation like this on the security book market.

Hacker's Challenge 2 is a sort of practical exam for the Hacking Exposed series. Hacker's Challenge was a terrific book for putting some incident response and forensic skills to use and practicing for the real thing. Hacker's Challenge 2 continues the tradition and should be a must read for anyone who works with network security and incident response. The style of the challenges is fairly ...

Network infrastructure security sections are excellent
I read Extreme Exploits because the content looked intriguing and I am familiar with applications written by lead author Victor Oppleman. The back cover states the book is "packed with never-before-published advanced security techniques," but I disagree with that assessment. While I found all of the content helpful, between 1/3 and 1/2 of it is probably available in older books -- including ...
