David Domine

McClanahan Publishing House, Inc., 2005

Ghosts of Old Louisville is a great read!
Ghosts of Old Louisville by David Domine presents the haunted past of America's largest Victorian neighborhood in an entertaining and informative format. His unopinionated, objective way of fleshing out the stories of those residents who haven't quite yet vacated their former abodes in the magnificent historic preservation district known as Old Louisville makes this a unique and spellbinding ...

My Monster Mama Loves Me So31 reviews
Laura Leuck

HarperTrophy, 2002

My Monster Mama Loves Me So
This monster book is fun, not scary at all. It tells about all the loving things Mama Monster does for her Monster children. When I was an elementary school librarian I used it for Story Time. And now my grandchildren--ages 2 and 4, love this book too!

Where the Wild Things Are365 reviews
Maurice Sendak

Harper Collins, 1988

Imaginative and Amazing Illustrations
The illustrations in this book really caught my eye. My favorite one was when all the wild things were howling at the moon. I enjoyed how the text stretches over a few pages and keeps the reader interested.

The Hallo-Wiener34 reviews
Dav Pilkey

Demco Media, 1999

Oh I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener........
I've always been a sucker for the underdogs in life. This book is about a sweet one who in the end teaches us about the real meaning of friendship. I've learned never to judge a book by its cover. This may look like a typical silly book with no thought behind it, but it's so much more! You see, it's about Oscar the dachshund (or as my kids call it - a wiener dog) who just wants to fit in with ...

Child of Faerie, Child of Earth26 reviews
Jane Dyer, Jane Yolen

Little, Brown Young Readers, 1997

Outstanding Bedtime Book for kids
As a father with a persistently open mind and a background in comparative mythology I was looking for stories and bedtime readings that encourage open thought when it comes to spiritual life. I have to say this is an outstanding book in that regard. Great visuals and good spiritual concepts without being biased one way or another. Great for a 4-7 year old I would think. My daughter is 6 and it's ...

The Boys Start the War34 reviews
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Topeka Bindery, 1999

First in a series
"The Boys Start the War" is a hit in my small Catholic library. After the first girl returned the book, she asked for Book 2, "The Girls Get Even." I had acquired only the first one, waiting to see the reaction. She was so delighted that I bought the entire set. The rest has been popular history! As with this series, let one student read and spread the word, then a reading frenzy follows! In ...

Big Pumpkin47 reviews
Erica Silverman

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 1992

The Best Halloween book for preschoolers out there!
Big Pumpkin is so Big in our house, it's read all the time...Oh and our son loves it too! Once my son (4 years old) discovered and fell in love with Big Pumpkin it didn't matter if it was Halloween or not. The story is nothing short of hilarious, the illustrations could not be better suited and truly compliment this book where so many others fall short. My husband and I get such a kick out of ...

Julia Donaldson

Topeka Bindery, 2003

Best Halloween Book Ever
My 2.5 year old daughter and I love this book! Although we skip the page with the dragon, the illustrations, rhyming and story make it fun! My daughter loves the animals and loves to quote the book. Great reading for all ages.

Shake D'Em Halloween Bones15 reviews
W. Nikola-Lisa

Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media, 2002

One of the best books!
This has to be one of the best books! My kids- 5 & 2- love books, we read all the time and are always at the library and bookstore. They both instantly loved this book and we read it over and over. They both get up and dance and sing right along with me. I highly recommend this for any age. I'm positive it will be on our book shelf all year and not just at Halloween!

The Halloween Tarot18 reviews
Kipling West

U.S. Games Systems, 1997

Deck Only
(Although this review is about the BOX SET rather than the deck only, the observations about the cards themselves are still relevant). "Successful Tarot readings are based on insight into what you *do* see, and whatever flashes of insight into your own life the pictures may offer you. In fact, think of yourself as the black cat that appears in every card of the Halloween deck. He is your ...

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything22 reviews
Linda Williams

HarperTrophy, 1988

Our Favorite Halloween Book
I found this book last year at the library and read it to my daughter when she was three- Within a few pages, she was saying most of the entertainingly repetitive dialogue on her own. It's the best Halloween book for preschoolers out there, in my opinion. This year, we bought a copy of our own and she loved it just as much as the first time around.

Haunted Castle on Hallow's Eve (Magic Tree House)18 reviews
Mary Pope Osborne

Random House Books for Young Readers, 2003

READ THIS BOOK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you like adventure books, than read this book. This book is about three kids who go to a castle and try to help a family, while trying not to be too scared. This is a really good book for anyone to curl up and read. It also has easy text for young readers to read and understand. Maybe you will like this book if you read it too.

The Halloween Tarot Deck and Book Set21 reviews
Karin Lee, Kipling West

U.S. Games Systems, 1997

Great deck for beginners
I am getting back into tarot after a few years of not doing many readings. I started out with the RWS deck, but never really caught on to the meanings just by looking at the imagery and reading the LWB. I then moved onto the Tarot of the Cat people, which was about the same experience, with much better artwork, and a much better book, but the artwork was a bit bare/abstract for me to catch on ...

All Hallows Eve: The Story of the Halloween Fairy19 reviews
Lisa Sferlazza Johnson

Positive Spin Press, 2006

The Story of the Halloween Fairy
This is a wonderful book for any fairy lover. I know this site recommends it for children 4 to 8 years old, however, all ages of fairy lovers will love it. I bought several copies for friends my own age and over and I am nearly retirement age. Both the author and illustrator do a wonderful job. You will do yourself a favor by buying a copy to add to your fairy book collection.

The Witch Family19 reviews
Eleanor Estes

Harcourt Young Classics, 2000

How to spell befuddled backwards
Like many others, I too stumbled across this book almost 30 years ago as an 8 or 9 year old and have never forgotten it. It strikes the perfect mix of imagination and word fun. I'm ordering a copy now in hopes my six year old daughter will enjoy it as much as I did.

The Widow's Broom21 reviews
Chris Van Allsburg

Houghton Mifflin, 1992

SOME OF THE AUTHOR'S BEST WORK
I did indeed love this one. The art work, per usual, for this author, was absolutely perfect. It is the type of work that can appeal to children as well as adults (I'm well into my sixties, and I enjoyed it...of course I have a lot of little boy in me still). As to the narrative, I did feel this was one of the author's better works. Allsburg is certainly a teller of good stories. I have ...

Halloween School Parties . . . What Do I Do? (What Do I Do? series)15 reviews
Wilhelminia Ripple

Oakbrook Publishing House, 1996

Geared Toward School Parties
Great for school parties, hence the title. Loads of ideas, but quite a bit of recycling from other seasonal party books in this series (Halloween BINGO, Christmas BINGO, Valentines BINGO, etc.). Many standard party ideas you have probably seen before. Like any large party-idea book, 1/2 of the content is not all that useful or relevant. Still, there are a few gems in here, so it will be ...
