A Must-Have !
Anyone interested in this unique tale should have this book in their library. It is very well written with tons of info concerning the Pied Piper. Of particular interest are the various renditions of the Pied Piper story Mieder includes in his writing. The Bibliography is extensive and even includes internet sources. A "must-have" for Pied Piper enthusiasts.

beautiful book
This is a gorgeous book and a wonderful version of the story for young kids. The ending is of course sad for the parents in the story (the kids leave with the piper because the parents did not pay his bill), but for the kids in the story, things don't seem so bad. "The children left singing for a future much brighter. And thus Hamelin paid for the tunes of the piper." The illustrations are ...

A bit about the history of this book . . .
"Rats! They fought the dogs, and killed the cats, And bit the babies in the cradles, And ate the cheeses out of the vats, And licked the soup from the cook's own ladles, Split open the kegs of salted sprats, Made nests inside men's Sunday hats, And even spoiled the women's chats, By drowning their speaking With shrieking and squeaking In fifty different sharps and flats." An Interesting Take on a Childhood Fable
China Mieville came highly recommended to me ( Thank you, Pop )and King Rat was my first choice of reading from this wonderful author. When an author can take a reader to a world completely unexpected and often terrifying, it makes for a very satisfying page-turner. The books starts out with Saul Garamond, a rather plain, slightly chubby young man riding the train to his dad's flat in ...

Gets better with time
After Hamelin might be marketed as children's lit, but that demeans it. The characters are real and alive. Even the cat. How many authors have tried to make an animal into a character and failed? But Scallywaggle is a full-fledged character. And who ever thought of a flower-arranging dragon? I'm still working on my re-read, so some of the details that I have aren't great. Though I hate the ...

"Deafening"... A masterpiece!
A great novel! This book, by Francis Itani, revolves around the world of a girl/woman who as acquired deafness through childhood illness. The setting is initially in Ontario, Canada in the late 1800's and then eventually alternating between Ontario and the European theater of World War I. I must admit I had some difficultly getting into this work, but I persevered and I'm glad I did, ...

Take a breath, a good one: it may be your last
As usual, Donna Jo Napoli lures you into the world within her pages in the most unassuming way. She paints grim scenes of the Medieval Days, and gives you a history lesson as well! You learn how people dressed and ate and worked: what kind of buildings they lived in and how they typically dealt with problems. The main character in Breath is called Salz: S for the salvation of his soul, A for ...

This is a complicated little story. A town at war with the pipers guild, a child at war with his father, both at war with memories of things from the past. All the people hold onto memories, stories and the past, and no one knows how to forgive or move forward. It is the story of justice and mercy. For too long Johannes the Master Pipers Apprentice, on his first solo mission focuses on justice ...

4.5 Star review
I love historical fiction, and I absolutely adored this tale by Mr. Courtenay Sylvia is a passionate story of a down trodden girl who, through trials and travels, learn who she is and what she is truly capable of. This tale can be - at times - confronting and sad, but it is also a tale of triumph and belief. Sylvia is a story anyone who enjoys historical fiction will enjoy - of that I ...

In this spectacular, spellbinding, ethereal, macabre, and uneasy novel, a young Scottish doctor makes a journey of discovery, and what a wild trip it is! A fascinating book
At first, I wondered why Chopin and Liszt weren't included in a book called "The Composer-Pianists," but these eight form a closely interrelated league all their own. By extensively quoting their letters, diaries and writings as they relate both to themselves and to each other (including intriguing material from Russia apparently never before translated), Rimm illuminates their thoughts, ...

What happened in Hamelin
This book provides an interesting take on the Pied Piper story that I found enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the historical perspective the author brought to the book, providing details about how life might have been in a medieval town at that time - and in a way that was easily understandable for a young teenager (which is when I first read the book).

A BRILLIANT WAY OF WRITING TO REACH KIDS OF TODAY
This book twists the old midevil legend of the Pied Piper. It is very interesting. I even enjoyed it and I'm almost 12 years old. Though it is much better when you have the author of the book there to read it to you (he came to my school today). I think sinse I enjoyed it it wiil be even more enjoyable for younger children.
