To thine own self be true ...
William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is arguably the most famous play ever written in the English language; it presents the world with questions and characters that have been the subject of thespian and scholarly debate ever since the Prince of Denmark's first appearance on the stage of London's Globe Theatre. Probably written and first performed in 1601 (estimates vary between 1600 and 1602), the ...

"A Ring of Noble Metal"
Like so many of the readers of this fascinating book, Hamlet's Mill, it is a work that I have read several times, learning much with each reading. When first published in 1969, it was reviewed by the late MIT Professor Emeritus, Philip Morrison, who was reknown as a distinguished theoretical astrophysicist and interpreter of science for the general public. He wrote " "The book is polemic, even ...

Golden Gate to Shakespeare
Bravo to the writers, editors, and publishers of the entire No Fear Shakespeare series. Rendering Shakespeare into prosaic, colloquial American English not only explains what Shakespeare was saying, but reveals how much better he said it! Here's a few examples from HAMLET: Hamlet sees the Ghost, but his mother doesn't. In modern lingo, she says, "This is only a figment of your imagination." ...

Contains Invaluable Information about Hamlet
This is worth buying for the critical essays and background information alone. Most interesting is the 'true' story of AMLETH, chronicled around 1100 by Saxo Grammaticus. This piece is bona fide history, albeit with some retouching. It was written about 500 years before Shakespeare took up his pen to write his mighty play, and is very interesting to contrast with the play. Much more is contained ...

If you want to read Shakespeare its has to be The new folger Library
If you ever thought about reading Shakespeare but was turned off or intimidated by the old english, not so with the new folger editions. Your basically reading the play on all the right sided pages , with the left pages reserved for all the definitions and explanations of the sayings and words that might be dificult to understand. This makes it very easy and enjoyable to read.

Absolutely Essential Reading
This book is the essential resource for anyone who wants to understand Hamlet. I eagerly recommend it to students from 8th grade to master's level, and to anyone who plans to teach this play. This text contains the complete original play, expert commentary, and very useful additional resources. Dr. Mategrano has done a thorough job of explaining the play, providing historical, theatrical, ...

Pelican Ed. good for experienced readers of Shakespeare
The Pelican Hamlet is an attractive, straightforward, inexpensive paperback edition for readers already familiar with Shakespeare. The text is based primarily on the second quarto edition with some additions from the Folio; a section at the beginning includes the lines from the Folio that were not incorporated in the text. (These include the "Denmark is a prison" remarks in Hamlet's conversation ...

An Antti Keisala Comment: Words In Flights Of Angels
I am a Bardolator and an Orthodox Shakespearean; so that you'll know where I'm coming from. I paraphrase Whitman by claiming that Hamlet contains multitudes. And of what other literary figures can we say such things and get away with it sounding normal? Perhaps God (especially the Yahweh of the Tanakh) and Jesus (either Nazarethian or Christ), perhaps Ulysses. Hamlet is so huge a figure greater ...

Helped me get an `A' in Shakespeare!
I remember well using Cliffs Notes for Hamlet when I was in high school. I did not like Shakespeare at all. I couldn't understand it. I didn't just read the Cliffs Notes, but used it as I read the book to help me interpret what I was reading. The book explains the play passage by passage. As useful as the Cliffs Notes are for understanding Shakespeare, I found the analyses at the end an ...

A celebration of theater, echoes of Barrymore...
This is a witty, rakish, stylish tribute to all actors in general, and Barrymore in particular. It's a wonderful play for a local theater group (I say that from experience). If you're an aspiring playwright, this is one you'll wish you had written. Rudnick's "Notes on Production" are very informative. Be ready for a challenge, actors: "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard."

You will be absorbed into the story
This really is "The Tragical History of Hamlet Prince of Denmark" and not only the Prince but his family. Not only his family but his friends. Not only his friends but all though that came before him and is told to those that came after him. You can take time to scrutinize and pick apart many underlying themes or may of the phrases that now challenge Bible sayings in today's sound bites. But ...

An Antti Keisala Comment: Beyond The Cosmic Doors
This is a must-have for any of us Bardolators. I'll reserve my thoughts on the play itself for the Second Quarto Edition of Arden, and give here some thoughts on the editions themselves. In brief. Well, to begin with, I've found the ability to read three variations of Hamlet very useful. It's fun, and it's acutely rewarding, especially if you're even slightly obsessed. The beauty of the ...

Great ideas
This book offers some great ideas for linking classical literature to contemporary young adult novels. I'm always looking for ways to show students that the classics are still relevant and I know I will reference this book often.

To read or not to read
I recently read the book Hamlet by William Shakespeare and I loved it. It contains all of the characteristics needed for a good story Such as murder, revenge, friendship, trust, life, and death. Hamlet also expresses how many different emotions people can have such as love, hate, anger, sadness, and much more. This story shows how important family and love are. In Hamlet a young boy, named ...

Best Yet
What a terrific find! I got the Romeo and Juliet cd from the same company and was very pleased. So, I tried Macbeth. This is the finest interpretation of the parts I have ever heard. The readers even speak with Scottish accents. This a dramatized version, complete with sound effects. My students love it.

Superb look at the structures of digital storytelling
Great book that gives an thorough account of the structures that are given by the format of the digital media. You not only learn to analyse how digital storytelling works but also how it could and should migrate from the status quo to elevate itself onto the next literary level. To anybody who is interested in digital storytelling I recommend this book with all my heart.

No Words to Describe
There is little need to review the actual text: it is undoubtedly (along with many other of Shakespeare's plays) an extremely influential work of the human mind, and very well may be the best work of literature ever written, period. The actual presentation and annotation of the text is rather indivdual as well. Whereas most annotated texts of Shakespeare place annotations on the other side of ...
