Handel3 reviews
Christopher Hogwood

Thames & Hudson Ltd, 1984

Truly excellent
I am amazed by Christopher Hogwood's book. Not only is Hogwood the leader of the brilliant period-instruments ensemble The Academy of Ancient Music and one of the finest conductors of early music, but he is also an outstanding musicologist and writer. He is intelligent and unflagginly entertaining in his narrative representation of Handel's life and works. Especially the chapter 5 on "the ...

Messiah: The Complete Work, 2 CD Set4 reviews
G. F. Handel

Hendrickson Worship, 2007

A well-crafted performance.
John Rutter's elegant rendition of Handel's Messiah is terrific. Every selection is flawlessly performed. I truly appreciate the research behind the performance included in the liner notes. The solos are quite nice. I particularly enjoy "Rejoice greatly" and "How beautiful are the feet". With only thirty singers, the Cambridge Singers are able to deliver this work in a light, buoyant way. ...

Handels Messiah Family Advent Reader5 reviews
Frances Lenzo, Donna Payne

Moody Publishers, 1999

Christmas Devotions your whole family will love
If you have never bought a family devotional before, thinking your family would never sit still for it, you're in for a real surprise! This is one thing you will want to add to your family's list of "to do's" over this Christmas season. I have never read a devotional quite like this one. Based on the great Handel's Messiah, this beautiful book is full of stories you most likely will never find ...

Blue Jean : What Young Women are Thinking, Saying, and Doing10 reviews
Sherry S. Handel

Blue Jean Media, 2000

Reads Like a Breath of Fresh Air
In her introduction Sherry S. Handel writes, "The success of Blue Jean is and always has been due to the involvement of girls who make it all happen. Without them there is no Blue Jean. I'm often asked, 'How did you get such a great idea and what inspired you?' The answer is simple...Girls and young women should be creating their own media. To me it is obvious and should have happened a long time ...

Messiah5 reviews
George Frideric Handel

HarperCollins Publishers, 1992

Wonderful book to have if you like to sing
This is a wonderful book if you love to sing. Even if you just love the songs and have a copy of the concert on tape, now you can learn the words! My commumity has Messiah all sing concerts and even though I know the songs, it's always nice to have the music on hand. I ,personally, have been looking for this book everywhere!

The Messiah: An Oratorio Complete Vocal Score (G. Schirmer's Editions of Oratorios and Cantatas)10 reviews
George Frideric Handel

Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation, 1986

Excellent
It got me through Christmas and Easter without having to use the choir's musty copies.

Messiah: Calligraphic Word Pictures Inspired by the Music and Text of George Frederick Handel's Messiah, ...4 reviews
Timothy R. Botts

Tyndale House Publishers, 1991

Messiah
I am very impressed with this book. Knowing the musical work, it is interesting how he portrays the music into pieces of art other than notes, instruments, and voices. Each and every piece can stand on it's own, and putting them all together is very meaningful. I shared this with my own children to appreciate Handel's work as they listened and looked. I have this out right after Thanksgiving, and ...

Beethoven's Letters (1790-1826)3 reviews, 2008

BEETHOVEN "A Look Behind The Notes"
Beethoven's Letters As a pianist, teacher, adjudicator, examiner, critic and author, I am often presented with performances of Beethoven's works that offer no insight or understanding of Beethoven the man or his music! When giving master classes, I encourage students to read his letters and analyze his music before attempting to perform it. Most consider Beethoven an unpleasant, angry, reclusive ...

Messiah6 reviews
George Frideric Handel

Novello, 1998

Very fine and very usable
This very fine edition is perfectly suitable for the listener wishing to follow along to a recording or a performance (why people do this at a live performance, I do not know). But it is also a very affordable vocal score for performance. It has several advantages. First, the printing is clear and easy to read. Second, the keyboard accompaniment isn't simply for a rehearsal pianist. It ...

Masters of War6 reviews

Taylor & Francis, 2007

Ideal for the academic,
is how I would describe Handel's 'Masters of War'. This however should not deter the keen reader from purchasing the book as it is indeed a wonderful, clear and interesting read. In the course of his analysis, Handel sets out to compare and contrast the different schools of thought that 'the greats' developed, with particular attention being paid to Sun Tzu and Von Clausewitz. Perhaps this is ...

Castles in Austria1 review, 1962

Beautiful Old Book!
I bought this book because my kids and I love castles. My mother is Austrian and I wanted to learn about castles in that country. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, since you can't tell much from the cover. It wasn't what I was hoping for (photos and historic information about Austrian castles), but it was so charming that I wasn't disapointed. Each castle is illustrated in the ...

George Frideric Handel1 review
Paul Henry Lang

Faber and Faber, 1967

A Companion for a fervent Handelian
Lang's book on Handel provides a sympathetic and detailed biography of the great composer and analytical summaries of his major works that takes the careful listener to new depths of understanding and appreciation of Handel's beautiful music. As an ardent Handelian, I have read many books on Handel, but it is to Lang's work that I return repeatedly. He responds to Handel's work as I do, and his ...

Handel's Operas 1704-17262 reviews
Winton Dean, John Merrill Knapp

Oxford University Press, USA, 1987

A Great Book about Handel's Operas
The interest in Handel's stage music has risen considerably in the last few decades, and one really needs a book like this for an in-depth reference about the genesis and analysis of his operas. Here one can find a bit about Handel's life as well, but the main focus is on the musico-dramatic structure of his works. I found the author's analysis of Handel's usage of da-capo conventions to ...

Clausewitz and Modern Strategy1 review
Michael Handel

Routledge, 1996

An Excellent Addition to Your Strategic Theory Library
This book is a compilation of essays that were presented at a Clausewitz conference in 1986. Given the nature of strategic theory and Clausewitz, twenty years doesn't necessary make something outmoded. In the case of strategic theory, we seem to be living through a particularly dark period in the US, where our sense of strategy, or even the existence of a "strategic culture" is in question. ...

Court and Conquest: Ottoman Origins and the Design for Handel's "Tamerlano" at the Glimmerglass Opera2 reviews
Aileen Ribeiro, Jean L. Druesedow

Kent State University Museum, 1999

A niche publication, but very interesting
For someone interested in Tamerlano, in Baroque opera, in costume design, or in renderings of Turkish and Persian costume, this is a fascinating publication. Certainly not for the general reading audience! This book contains many illustrations, culminating in sumptuous photographs from various angles of the costumes designed for Glimmerglass' gorgeous Tamerlano production. The background essays ...

Handel's Messiah: Origins, Composition, Sources2 reviews
Jens Peter Larsen

W W Norton & Co Inc, 1990

This book has had a great impact on how "Messiah" is performed nowadays
One of the great contributions of musicology over the past several decades is helping us see more clearly how composers in previous eras worked. Before the era of, say, Beethoven, music was never conceived as a permanent work that would stay in a single form for all eternity. It was put together for performance (or a few performances) and then it was off to the next work. Occasionally works ...

L'Invitation Au Voyage/Invitation to the Voyage: A Poem from the Flowers of Evil2 reviews
Charles Baudelaire

Bulfinch Press, 1997

Invitation to the Voyage
The translation here strays a bit from the original for the sake of making it rhyme. Although this may raise the eyebrows of some purists, I feel that the english version has charms of its own. The design of this book is really outstanding, and the old duo-tone photographs used to illustrate it are quite poetic in their own right, and seem even more so as a result of the way they are combined ...

Akira's Army1 review
Keith Kowalczyk

Midnight Press Books, 2007

Making it Happen
At least I can say Ray is trying to make it happen. Whenever I think that I'm having a bad day, I think of Ray and Akira's Army. Set in the blazing sun, this book takes you on trips and turns only Kowalczyk can take you on. It reminds me never to join the army, especially in WWII. Great Job!

George Handel (Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers)1 review
Mike Venezia

Topeka Bindery, 1995

A fantastic series!!
Combined with music and simple art projects, this book and the others in the series, have made for a wonderful class for grades 2-3 and 4-6. The books are accessable and engaging, allowing the students to learn and have fun at the same time. I would highly recommend these books for nearly any setting, in a music class, as a supplement to instrumental lessons, or simply music enrichment with your ...

Intelligence and Military Operations2 reviews
Michael Handel

Routledge, 1990

Intel and Ops
The book is very well written and researched. It uses specific examples in history to support the authors view of how intelligence effects military operations. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in understanding how intelligence helps or hinders military operations.
