The Handmaid and the Carpenter: A Novel

Lovely story
Although this book is fiction, the story is real. It reminds us that Mary and Joseph were "human" and had the same feelings and frustrations as the rest of mankind. The book is not great literature, but it allows the reader(both adult and teen) some time for reflection during the hectic Christmas season.

Decent HOW book but there are better
The House of Winslow as a whole is absolutely riveting. This particular book is decent but not one of the best in the series. Rena Matthews is a stuck up control freak for a good portion of the book, but then she comes around, eventually. Nothing like a good dose of "lost on a tropical island" to get one's head out of the clouds. The heavy characterization really shines through her. ...

I wasn't expecting this!!!!
This book was written very well. I had the creeps while I was reading it. It reminded me of the movie "Children of Men" and the book "The Giver". The entire time I was reading this book, I kept thinking of a certain female vice presidential candidate. I am afraid that she would love the form of government that is described. This is a short read. Give it a whirl.

Roman Catholic church music in England served the needs of a vigorous, vibrant and multi-faceted community that grew from about 70,000 to 1.7 million people during the long nineteenth century. Contemporary literature of all kinds abounds, along with numerous collections of sheet music, some running to hundreds, occasionally even thousands, of separate pieces, many of which have since been forgotten. Apart from compositions in the latest ...

Reality: Offred fights and survies
This book deals with many things such as humanity and class but the main thing it deals with is the struuggle for women and how they gain and lose power by their sexuality. Offred has power over the Commander and his wife because she is fertile but her fate lies in their hands so they also have power over her. I really enjoyed this book it was mind boogleing to think that these situations can ...

A very helpful guide to understand Atwood's dystopic novel
This review is actually of Mary Ellen Snodgrass' Cliff Notes for "The Handmaid's Tale" and not Margaret Atwood's novel, which is one of the few late 20th-century works for which there is a little yellow book. Snodgrass begins with a concise review of Atwood's life, background and published works. By way of setting up the novel, Snodgrass takes the rather unusual step of providing comments from ...

Why Would Anyone Give This Only 4 Stars?
This is easily the most impactful book I have ever read. It is brilliant, in every sense of the word. Every woman should own a copy! "Progressed" men will benefit, too. If you can avoid reading the reviews of this book that describe the whole thing, you'll enjoy it a lot more. I hate when people tell me the story before I get a chance to read it. Be prepared, this book has a strong message.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
I am one of the "fools". Well, that's the only sympathetic group in this novel, and they are marginalized. With personal experience of a college French department where the dominant element would gladly push out that pesky language and literature and style itself The Department of Theory and Discourse, I admit that much of my delight in this satire comes from the in jokes. However, there is ...

The Shining Badge: Jennifer Winslow was once a spoiled New York socialite-until the crash of 1929 forced her family to move to a small farm in Georgia. She is adjusting to her tough rural life when, through a series of startling events, she finds herself running for county sheriff. The Royal Handmaid: Rena Matthews feels called to take the gospel to the South Seas. When rough-hewn Travis Winslow volunteers to accompany her, she wants to refuse ...
