FIVE Stars to the Nth Degree from a tough critic
Publisher Harper Collins really lives up to its name. I was so impressed with the carefully chosen picture books they compiled. There were so many children's books and I wanted to find the best ones for my child and I did with this book! There are 12 unabridged books in this book and the picture quality is EXCELLENT. The paper is glossy stock grade and the pictures are just beautiful. Good ...

Outstanding resource!
Many people, myself included, find the NRSV to be the most reliable translation of these books extant. The NRSV Bible is produced by the 5500-member Society of Biblical Literature. While that group includes representatives of practically every conceivable religious and scholarly perspective, this translation is definitely not typical of committee products nor does it compromise. You will find ...

Invaluble Research Tool
I actually purchased this from a bookstore back in 1988-89, then it was priced at over $100! I got it at a discount because there was a flaw in the binding. I wanted a Bible study resource that went beyond the concordances that were available at the time. Compared to some of the other Bible dictionaries that I've used this one reads more like an encyclopedia. It combines archaeological, ...

Good reference, but an amazing toilet reading material!
If you're anything like me, you enjoy reading while in the toilet, doing one of the necessities of human nature, this reference has a great "random open" feature, where you can just slide your thumb at any page and find an interesting term you can think and learn about, I dont know how much the shallow discussion to these complex terms is really useful, but it gives you interesting things to ...

HarperCollins Atlas of Bible History

nice concept
There are several evangelical atlases on the market, including two award winners: Holman Bible Atlas and the much newer IVP Atlas of Bible History. Both books take the Bible seriously as a source of historical data, and both were written by top scholars. The new Oxford Bible Atlas, 4th Edition, is totally different, warning you in the first chapter that they are about to rip the Bible to shreds! ...

EXCELLENT OVERVIEW
Western philosophy can become a complex subject to the point of confusing lay persons and college undergraduates. HarperCollins College Outline series takes away that confusion by providing us with an in depth text summarizing the basic tenants and issues of philosophy without sacrificing the content. Introduction to Philosophy gives the general reader and college student a basic overview ...

American Academy Of Religion

Good general reference on non-western religions
Overall, the book provides a good general desk reference on religion, and is helpful in my field of religion reporting for newspapers. While it provides extensive coverage of non-Western religious traditions, however, it is somewhat lacking in its entries on American religious movements. There is no entry for the "chavurah" movement in Judaism, for example, scant information about Charismatics ...

Excellent translation- superb annotations- binding problems?
The NRSV is a superlative translation of scripture with very few drawbacks. Unlike the writers of the dogmatic, Evangelical-doctrine-riddled NIV, the translators of the NRSV (and earlier RSV) made a real attempt to be literal, yet use modern language. When there is ambiguity or other difficulty in translation, the NRSV includes footnotes that tell the reader other possible readings, rather than ...

The best available
This book has the best collection of photos that is available for the study of the New Testament. The author explains everything from how archaeology works to what the new discoveries mean for Christians and interested readers of the Bible. It is great that every page has illustrations, maps, and photos. You can really see what the authors of the New Testament were talking about. Reed includes ...

Best reference out there
I've worked in health care for over 20 years at several facilities. This book was recommended at a conference over 10 years ago. I still have that copy and use it nearly everyday. It is much better than the online Dorlands and even Taber's. The Merck Manual has more information but this is precise with exceptional pictures.

Necessary for College Spanish Students
If you plan on majoring or minoring in Spanish when you go to college, you definitely need this dictionary. Sure, it's large and heavy and impossible to take with you to class, but you can leave it at home. You can use your pocket dictionary when you're in class. But eventually that little pocket dictionary will become obsolete in some cases, especially if you're reading old Spanish literature. ...

GREAT for a quick cram or an in-depth study
I bought this book to pass out of my Participation in Government course. If we get over an 85% on the proficiency exam, we get to pass out of the course. There was every topic imaginable, but in a very organized format, along with nine informative appendixes. I read through the book a few days in advance (with almost no prior knowledge about government) and passed out easily. I highly ...

I have a number of reference books that I use rather frequently for scripture study. Without a doubt, the two volumes I refer to most are THE HARPER-COLLINS BIBLE DICTIONARY and HARPER BIBLE COMMENTARY.
