The Haunting of Hill House (Penguin Classics)326 reviews
Shirley Jackson

Penguin Classics, 2006

Set the horror standard for me!
I first read "The Haunting of Hill House" as a lonely, unpretty, extremely bookish 13-year-old girl, at that time a purchase from the Scholastic Book Club for Teens. The only way I can describe the book's effect on me is to say that it was enormously jolting, and that I have used it as the standard by which I judge the entire horror genre ever since. Needless to say, many, many other works fall ...

The Ghost and Mrs. McClure (Haunted Bookshop Mystery)37 reviews
Alice Kimberly

Berkley, 2004

The Ghost and Mrs. McClure
This was a fun, light read that kept me entertained, chuckling, and guessing who-done-it until close to the end. If you like to flirt with the paranormal, enjoy mystery/crime novels (there are a lot of references to other authors in the book), and like a little humor mixed in then you will enjoy this one.

Haunted Castle on Hallow's Eve (Magic Tree House, 30)18 reviews
Mary Pope Osborne

Random House Books for Young Readers, 2003

Magic Treehouse Haunted Castle
We really enjoy this series- we read to our 5 & 3 year old boys each night...just two or three chapters. They love the MT stories. Easy reading.

The Ghost and the Femme Fatale (Haunted Bookshop Mysteries, No. 4)14 reviews
Alice Kimberly

Berkley, 2008

Ghost & The Bookseller
I am really enjoying these "ghost stories." The interaction between Mrs. McClure and Jack are heartwarming in their differences due to generation changes. I did miss the opening chapter dealing with Jack's death/murder in 1948 but there are other 'scenes' that do make up for the ommission. I look forward to how the relationship is dealt with between human and ghost in the future.

Batman: Haunted Knight28 reviews
Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale

DC Comics, 1996

Batman Fights Scarecrow and Mad Hatter
The Scarecrow and Mad Hatter as real Batman villains, the way it should be! Not as filler characters as in other Halloween books like The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. Only problem is they are short stories since there are 3 stories in this book. The last story sucks so much as Bruce Wayne gets visited by spirits of his past a la A Christmas Carol.

The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark396 reviews
Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan

Ballantine Books, 1997

Changed my live and views! I love you Carl!
This one book helped me to reject 9 years worth of silly occult beliefs. I suppose I didn't 100% believe them, but they were things I wanted to believe. I knew that this book would change me and for awhile I was even nervous to read it, but a few months ago, my time had come. He spends a lot of time spent debunking claims of alien abductions, comparing the scenarios (nighttime, sexual ...

In the Haunted House6 reviews
Eve Bunting

Clarion Books, 1994

Read it, love it!
My son and I have read this book over and over and over again. Whether it's Halloween time or not this book will be a sure favorite of kids' who like the dark side. Don't take this to mean that the book is dark or scary. What I mean is that if your kids have a taste for spookies then this book will not fail to please. Great pictures with subtle hidden pictures that show that the spookies and ...

On A Scary Scary Night (Can You See What I See?)1 review
Walter Wick

Cartwheel Books, 2008

Fantastic book for kids of all ages
One of my 5 year old twins picked out this book at a book fair and it has not disappointed. We've spent many evenings together looking for the hidden items. My other 5 year old is a little scared by some of the pictures, but it really depends on your kid. I only wish there was an answer key somewhere, we can't find the hare on the first double page spread!

Goosebumps: The Haunted School (Goosebumps)27 reviews
R L Stine

Scholastic Inc., 2005

Mason's Favorite Book
I adore Goosebumps because I like scary books. The best parts are the funny parts. I get frightened and put the book down and stare at the wall, thinking why am I scared. That's why I give this book 5 stars.

Haunted: A Novel102 reviews
Chuck Palahniuk

Anchor, 2006

A fantastic reading experience!
I LOVED this book. The writing is excellent. The author managed to bring out a different voice for each story. There was not a false moment in the narration--it all rang true. By the end I felt like I knew these characters. In our "reality show" culture where there are so many vivid examples of how group think/survival situations can bring out the worst in people this novel is great social ...

Haunted (Women of the Otherworld, Book 5)63 reviews
Kelley Armstrong

Spectra, 2005

How far would you go to protect those you love?
When Eve Levine (while alive, a witch not afraid of using Dark Magic to reach her goals and protect herself and her daughter Savannah) is called by the Fates to do them the favor owed (see Industrial Magic (Women of the Otherworld, Book 4)), she is taken by surprise. It seems that there is a nasty spirit out there - a demi-demon called the Nix - who has escaped from her hell dimension and is ...

Raintree: Haunted (Silhouette Nocturne)32 reviews
Linda Winstead Jones

Silhouette, 2007

Read them all
This book was very good. It had great pacing and was quite good at holding my interest (which is not always easy). Although it is not the first in the series, it makes you want to get the trilogy.

Listening Library (Audio), 2007

Magic Tree House Books
My granddaughter and grandson both enjoy these books. Sometimes it is hard to find the exact book they want. Thank goodness they are numbered in the series so we can keep track of them. They devour them so fast.

The Ghost and the Dead Deb (Haunted Bookshop Mystery)17 reviews
Alice Kimberly

Berkley, 2005

A Good Series Becomes Great
I love this series! I was iffy on the first book wondering just how the author was going to convince me that there was a palpable heat between a ghost and a very much alive young woman, but she did, and now I'm into this series for the long haul. The frequent glimpses into Jack's past were enjoyable and the construct of Penelope joining him is an interesting twist with room to grow. This entry ...

My Dog's a Scaredy-Cat #10: A Halloween Tail (Hank Zipzer)1 review
Henry Winkler, Lin Oliver

Grosset & Dunlap, 2006

Hank Zipzer is GREAT!!!
The entire series of Hank Zipzer books is GREAT!!! My son can't get enough of them. They are a wonderful read, especially for any child who suffers from a learning challenge. They are easy to relate to and help to build self-esteem for children who have learning challenges and help others to understand how the world works for them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

What's a Ghoul to Do? (Ghost Hunter Mysteries, Book 1)44 reviews
Victoria Laurie

Signet, 2007

New to this Author
I see there are only 43 reviews and I love to read a lot of reviews before I make my decision to buy so here it goes. I was reading several other books first so I let my granddaughter read this 1st and she read it in one day. I asked her how she liked it and she said it was good{not very vocal}but a high recommend from her. I couldn't wait to get into it so I put aside another of my books I ...

Hell House144 reviews
Richard Matheson

Tor Books, 1999

Definitive Haunted House Novel
After reading Hell House, I immediately ordered all three volumes of Richard Matheson's Collected works. It is hands-down the best haunting novel I've read, and possibly the best horror novel. Steven King often refers to Matheson as his main influence - and it is abundantly clear why when you read this book. I think I can safely say that The Shining, Pet Semetary, 1408, Rose Red and others would ...

The Ghost and the Dead Man's Library (Haunted Bookshop Mystery)15 reviews
Alice Kimberly

Berkley, 2006

Penelope Peruses Poe
What could be more enjoyable for mystery book lovers than a mystery series set in a mystery bookshop? I have thoroughly enjoyed each entry in this series and this third book was no exception. The atmosphere of these books is light but still serious enough to make the story believable and a great continuity of characters helps to keep this series glued together in a very admirable manner. The ...
