Terrific when first published, now out of date
George P. Shultz is one of the most distinguished government officials in U.S. history, but this book was a bit of a disappointment. It was first published during the 1970s, and much of its material deals with that era. The contents of the 1998 second edition do not appear to have been updated. E.g., the chapter on tax policy does not mention the tax reforms implemented during the 1980s, or ...

You need this book-- 10 isn't a high enough rating...
When I first bought this book, I was expecting a few good laughs... what I got was amazing. I cracked open the book and cracked a grin, a few pages later I was chuckling, a couple misprints later, howling... after about five minutes with this, I was reduced to nearly to tears with sides so sore and so out of breath, I was worried I had to stop before I got a hernia or a heart attack, but I ...

Excellent
This is the best general audience technical book I have read in a long time. Every chapter is interesting and highly informational. I would put some of the chapters in the category of required reading. We are taken in, many times, by to many myths. The author is very well balanced.
Bioethics Beyond the Headlines: Who Lives? Who Dies? Who Decides?
Albert R. Jonsen
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.
, 2005
Bioethics Beyond the Headlines is a primer in bioethics. You will not find convoluted philosophical arguments in this volume. Rather, you will find an engaging sampling of the key questions in bioethics, including euthanasia, assisted reproduction, cloning and stem cells, neuroscience, access to healthcare, and even research on animals and questions of environmental ethics--areas typically overlooked in general introductions to bioethics.

Remarkable Bit of History
These are the headlines that made the news. Often three lines, set in Italics Times, page one headlines of the "New York Times" defined American news for years. The internet, and national papers have diminished this effect somewhat, but for most of the Twentieth Century, the NYT was the news. Because of their influence, they were not only the reporters, but the generators of our news. If they ...

If you are a wrestling fan this book is for you!!!
The authors of "Professional Wrestling", Kristian Pope and Ray Whebbe have outdone themselves with this one. If you are a wrestling fan, young or old, long time or new, there is something in this book (actually a whole lot of things), to keep you interested for a long time to come. My favorite chapters were the "Ring Beauties" and "Slamographies", the former because there is not a lot of press ...

Making Headlines: The American Revolution As Seen Through the British Press
Troy Bickham
Northern Illinois Univ Pr
, 2008
The War for American Independence was essentially a civil war throughout the colonies: loyalists and patriots who had grown up together as countrymen found themselves fighting on opposing sides. Troy Bickham asserts that the war proved almost as divisive in the motherland, as the British wielded the almighty pen and went to battle on the pages of the press in Britain. Surpassing the breadth of previous studies on the subject, Making Headlines ...

All the News That's Fit to Print and Then Some.
It used to be that if someone wanted to keep educated with current events, a person would read THE NEW YORK TIMES. That paper used to be the paradigm of all the news that was "fit to print." Unfortunately, THE N.Y. TIMES isn't the paper that it used to be, has lost its objectivity, and has largely become a paper filled with little more than left-leaning political banter. Thank goodness for the ...

The public's knowledge of crime is primarily derived from the depiction in the media. If the media is responsible for the headlines, the conclusion to be reached is that they influence the public's attention regarding crime. This book examines, through the study of cases that have made headlines, what is noted as the fear of crime among the populace. In addition to cases such as Scott Peterson, Marilyn Sheppard, and Jon Benet Ramsey, the authors ...
