Himalaya: Personal Stories of Grandeur, Challenge, and Hope5 reviews
Brot Coburn

National Geographic, 2006

A Himalayan Feast
This book would be worth buying for the photographs alone. There are well over 100 of them and nearly every one (as is appropriate for a National Geographic Society book) is of salon quality. But you shouldn't just look at the pictures. They are accompanied by 40 short pieces by a wide variety of people, each with a story to tell, either of how their life has been changed by their Himalayan ...

Being a Buddhist Nun: The Struggle for Enlightenment in the Himalayas
Kim Gutschow

Harvard University Press, 2004

They may shave their heads, don simple robes, and renounce materialism and worldly desires. But the women seeking enlightenment in a Buddhist nunnery high in the folds of Himalayan Kashmir invariably find themselves subject to the tyrannies of subsistence, subordination, and sexuality. Ultimately, Buddhist monasticism reflects the very world it is supposed to renounce. Butter and barley prove to be as critical to monastic life as merit and ...

Himalaya1 review
Eric Valli, Anne de Sales

Harry N. Abrams, 2004

Stunning photographs with very intimate human touches
Eric Valli combines all the elements of photography that I like: composition, color, light, smoke, and the human experience. I love how he tells a story with each photo. I would be stunned if only one of his pictures combined all these elements superbly, but nearly all of his photos do! I have looked at many photography books, but I only want to own this one.

Lonely Planet Trekking in the Indian Himalaya2 reviews
Garry Weare

Lonely Planet Publications, 2002

for himalaya lovers
the book presents a very focussed view for people interested in trekking in the indian region of the himalayas. it gives details of treks along with relevant maps. it is not for those looking for a general tourist guide for the region, but can be used by a variety of trekkers. usually one does not trust the trek details and advice given in such books and this might be very general at times. but ...

Surfing the Himalayas: A Spiritual Adventure77 reviews
Frederick Lenz

St. Martin's Griffin, 1996

Best book ever!
Hey, this is the best book I ever read, not just on Enlightenment and Buddhism, but in general! And I have read hundreds of books on Buddhism, and especially Tibetan Buddhism. Note, that I have not necessarily read too many books in general, I actually prefer movies usually. `Surfing the Himalayas' and its sequel, 'Snowboarding to Nirvana' really make sense and simplify advanced Buddhist ...

Homage to the Himalayas1 review

"Harry N. Abrams, Inc.", 2006

deeply moving photographs
I checked this book out of the library and fell in love with it. The landscapes have the quality of a dream, or a painting. I appreciated the photographer who would choose these sights to capture with the camera. The thumbnail index at the end was most interesting in explaining the fascinating images. And at a very reasonable price.

Himalaya10 reviews
Michael Palin

Thomas Dunne Books, 2005

Beautiful and interesting book about a fantastic trip
"Himalaya" is a book written by Michael Palin as an alternative account of a trip that was filmed and first shown as a TV program on BBC TV. (This program has also been shown on many other TV stations, and is now available on DVD.) In addition to the text in the book there are many beautiful pictures by Basil Pao, the stills photographer who accompanied the BBC team on the trip. This was a ...

Inside Himalaya2 reviews

WN, 2005

Beautiful and interesting photographs from the incredible Himalayan mountains
"Inside Himalaya" is a beautiful coffee table style book. It is large format and hardcover and printed on glossy paper. There is very little text in this book, just a 2-page introduction by Michael Palin, a 3-page postscript by Basil Pao and a short caption for each of the 300 pictures. The pictures are wonderful. Some of the best are presented as impressive 2-page spreads, and most of the ...

Zondervan, 1993

Inspirational Living Stones
Dr. Thomas Hale has given us an opportunity to experience the trials, tribulations and triumphs, but more importantly, the inspiration that he and his wife have been so fortunate to have been a part of. His writing style is not only easy to read, but it compels you to want to read more. Himalaya: Life on the Edge of the World1 review
David Zurick, P. P. Karan

The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999

Myths and Realities of the Himalayan Environment
Zurick and Karan's book on the Himalaya is easily the best book in recent years focussing on the condition of the Himalayan environment. Instead of using evidence from a few small examples, usually villages scattered across the Himalaya from Pakistan to Assam, the authors invoke a meta analysis, an examination of many studies and especially data from the entire area. This technique avoids any ...

Himalaya Alpine-Style: The Most Challenging Routes on the Highest Peaks6 reviews
Stephen Venables, Andy Fanshawe

Mountaineers Books, 1996

Indispensable for all Himalaya enthusiasts
Despite the disparaging comments of some earlier reviewers this is a great mountaineering book. Whoever was been on one of the Himalayan giants knows that this is not children's play. The risks are enormous and it is remarkable that some people venture into these inhospitable areas time and again. I see no reason to qualify the merits of this book based on the success of the authors' personal ...
