Saint Augustine of Hippo

Worthwhile even for agnostics
Before reading any St. Augustine, I had formed an image of him as an intolerant puritan, almost Taliban-esque. As an agnostic, I did not at all expect to find him a sympathetic figure. The "Confessions," however, reveal a warmly human, hugely intelligent man, relating his own open-minded spiritual journey, which included way-stops at Manicheeism and neo-Platonism. Augustine formulated his ...

A Work of Art!
This is a beautiful picture book, richly illustrated by Newman, who lets his artwork tell the story of a rhino suffering from mistaken identity. Newman's colorful and expressive characters are not only fun, they guide the reader smoothly through his touching tale, allowing the reader to sympathize with poor rhino and cheer for the little hero who may help him. Add this book to your child's ...

Hippo does not dissapoint!
What a unique an excellent book "Hippo" is! If you have ever heard James Ryle in person, he speaks like he writes, in an amusing, simple yet profound manner. That is exactly how he comes across in this book. He tackles a very, very difficult subject with story, witt, and lots of scripture (that is very appreciated). Most of the contents of this book came as a fresh breeze of new insight. ...

Fun book you'll actually like reading out loud!
This book is fun reading that will entertain you as well as the kid. It's quick, easy reading, but has lots of pages so that the story doesn't end right away. I baby-sat an 18-month old toddler who loves books, and I didn't mind at all reading and re-reading this one. The words flow well, and I didn't feel awkward reading aloud the way I do with some other books. I will definitely buy this ...

Outstanding book!
We found this book in the bookstore, and my husband read it to our 2 1/2 year old who was totally enthralled by it. I have since read it myself and have just ordered it from amazon.com. It's a charming book, very well written and beautifully illustrated. The story is about a young hippo who is tired of being a hippo and wants to be something else. So he goes off and tries to be a variety of ...

Disappointed Jane Yolen fan
Having LOVED all of the "How do dinosaurs.." series, I thought I'd give this one a try. The illustrations are, as always, beautiful. I am a little disappointed reading this to a toddler audience though. The grammar isn't proper and the page that says "Hippos Bad" isn't my favorite message, even though it follows up with time to be glad. I believe I saw that this book is targeted towards 9 - 12 ...

Simple and dazzling!
I love hippos and was delighted to see this book. It's a pop-up book with tabs and flaps to keep children's interest. The illustrations are truly marvelous. It is fun to see the many friends of the hippo try to help with getting rid of hiccups. A very simple story that can lead to laughter and fun with children.

More than sixty years ago, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac sat down inNew York City to write a novel about the summer of 1944, when one of their friends killed another in a moment of brutal and tragic bloodshed. The two authors were then at the dawn of their careers, having yet to write anything of note. Alternating chapters and narrators, Burroughs and Kerouac pieced together a hard-boiled tale of bohemian New York during World War II, ...

Absolutely charming
Mwenye Hadithi writes wonderful animal fables. Hippo is amongst his sweetest. I wish the book was still in hardcover! Makes an excellent read-aloud, and the watercolor illustrations are a great complement.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO moaned hippo
Hippo wakes up with a toothache. He spun in a circle and crashed into a tree. His friend the Cuckoo Bird sees this and thinks Hippo is going bananas. She flies off to tell Monkey.... This is cute story. What is fun is how each animal warned adds a new part to the story as he warns another. Kind of along the lines of the old telephone game where the original message gets distorted as ...

Great Hippo Book
If you have ever wondered about hippos or are just interested in them, this book in the Worldlife Library series is excellent. My wife and I both enjoyed the book which was an informative yet easy read. Another plus is the fabulous photography, which was done by the author himself. Just gorgeous! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in hippos, both adults and children alike.

My father used to read this book to me and my brother before bedtime and I still remember it as my all-time favorite book (I am 28 and about to start my own family). The book encourages a child to use his/her imagination.
