The Elephant in the Playroom: Ordinary Parents Write Intimately and Honestly About the Extraordinary Highs ...39 reviews
Denise Brodey

Hudson Street Press, 2007

Candid
I loved this book! The stories were wonderful. It takes bravery to be so open and honest. Every story had something I could relate to as a parent and as a parent of special needs children. It was wonderful!

Gene Gach

Authorhouse, 2001

A rare gem
Honestly, by Gene Gach, is a rare gem. Similar to "My American Century" by Studs Terkel, this book is a first-hand account of the lifestyle and events that shaped the last fifty years in America. It is told from a first person perspective that allows the reader to relate to and, in fact, empathize with, the main character and the events that unfold in his life and that of many others who were ...

The Elephant in the Playroom: Ordinary Parents Write Intimately and Honestly About Raising Kids with Special ...1 review
Denise Brodey

Plume, 2008

A Poignant Resource for Parents
"The Elephant in the Playroom" is a collection of very personal accounts from parents of children with a variety of special needs. In their words, you will recognize your own raw emotions. There is something cathartic in empathizing with these remarkable stories.

Honestly, Katie John!1 review

Scholastic Book Services, 1969

A new generation loves Katie John
I purchased this book for my nine-year-old daughter because I had enjoyed it so when I was that age (I'm nearly 49). Guess what--it's a huge hit with her, too! She received it a couple months ago, and has already read it twice. She has let other new books go unread as she immerses herself in all things Katie John! I guess it's confirmation that this book really IS a timeless classic.

Oh Honestly, Angela5 reviews
Nancy K. Robinson

Scholastic, 1985

Oh Honestly, Angela!
This is a very enjoyable read. It also makes a wonderful read- aloud choice. I have read it to fourth grade students over the years, and they really connect with the characters. Robinson's use of the natural humor that arises when a five year old converses with young teens is very captivating.

Honestly, Katie John2 reviews
Mary Calhoun

HarperCollins Publishers, 1972

Katie is a girl like Beverly Cleary's Ellen Tebbits
I read this book when I was 9 in 4th grade. In summer 1985 I was with my family on vacation on the washinton coast staying in a cabin in Grays Harbor area, and Mom would go garage sale-ing during the day. She bought this book for 10c and I knew I was going to like it. The inside title page showed Katie on her bike and she reminded me of Beverly Cleary's Ellen Tebbits. I fell in love with Katie ...

Straight Parents, Gay Children: Inspiring Families to Live Honestly and With Greater Understanding11 reviews
Robert A. Bernstein

Thunder's Mouth Press, 1999

Important help for "new" parents
Our son came out at age 18. When I worked up the courage, 4 months later, to attend my first PFLAG meeting (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), the support of people who have already been there was wonderful. This was the first book they recommended, and it made a huge difference in my ability to bring order to my thoughts (and my conflicted heart), and not just to accept but to ...

Quite Honestly14 reviews
John Mortimer

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2007

Full Circle
This is a love story without imagery depictions of gnarly positions written beautifully by Mr. Mortimer. Lucy wants to do some good in this world so she volunteers to be a reformer to Terry who has just been released from prison. Terry is not that easy to change therefore Lucy faces a big challenge in front of her. When push comes to shove Lucy perseveres; she is the daughter of a bishop. A lot ...

Sheila Walsh

Zondervan Publishing Company, 2003

Powerful Testimony & Book
A few years ago I found a new copy of this book at a used book store for a decent price. I gave it to my dad for Christmas because he's an avid reader of non-fiction, especially biographies & autobiographies. I wish I'd read it first before I gave it away. I eventually bought a copy from Amazon & read it recently (4/04). I'm glad I finally read it myself. Sheila Walsh got saved when she was ...
