Gripping Horrific Account of Life in the Auschwitz Death Camp
Dr. Miklos Nyiszli has written (1960) a graphic, gruesome, first-hand account of his time working as a doctor in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Due to his previous medical training in medicine and pathology, Dr. Nyiszli was spared by the hideously inhuman Dr. Josef Mengele, to be the medical doctor to the Sonderkommando, the 600-plus Jewish prisioners who actually operated the creamatorium ovens ...

Excellent New Hungarian Phrasebook!
Well, I am a native speaker of Hungarian myself, so I was quite curious to see this book. For the most part, I found it very good. The main part of the book, the phrases are quite good and natural - it really shows that they had native speakers check it. The phrases cover all sorts of issues from shopping to visiting a doctor or even dating and having sex! The boxed texts on culture are also ...

Great for both travelers and language students
I am very impressed with this book. The first section covers basic vocab and grammar needed by a first-time traveler. The accompanying CDs work very well to enforce what one learns. The chapters are well thought-out so that they include a coherent group of concepts that one could learn in about two days by going through each chapter with the audio once, then repeating the next day to ...

"Life" in Auschwitz; Nazi Genocidal Ambitions beyond Jews and Gypsies
This review is based on the original (1947) edition. Let's focus on some seldom-developed issues. Large numbers of Polish clergy were sent to Auschwitz in the early years of the camp. However, Lengyel reports many more arriving in 1944 (pp. 108-110). They were often put to death immediately; the remainder being subject to degrading humiliations and tortures. Polish children were frozen to ...

Nice pocket guide
Here's another pocket guide I will definitely pack on the next trip to Budapest. I'll have on hand something to quickly check the meanings of the strange, Finnish-like language I doubt I can ever learn. I highly recommend this guide, particularly at the low used prices. My copy, supposedly used, came in clean, bright and new-looking condition. I couldn't be happier.

Good coverage of a neglected subject
The major tank battles on the Hungarian plains fought in late 1944 have been neglected, for some reason, for many years by English-speaking writers. Thankfully, this situation has now been remedied with this excellent book! The author's text describes in great detail, on a virtually daily basis, the military activities not only of the German and Soviet forces, but also the Hungarian and ...

A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice The U.S. publication of A Book of Memories in 1997 introduced to our shores the work of an extraordinary novelist, Péter Nádas. Now, in Fire and Knowledge , a superb collection of short stories, essays, and literary criticism, we discover other aspects of Nádas's major presence in European life and letters: as a trenchant commentator on the events that have transformed Europe since 1989, as a ...

TRUE
A story about a boy, Lazlo, who is new in school. The kids in his class make fun of him. I think we can all relate to Lazlo in all different ways. People have made fun of you, and you have also made fun of other people. But in Lazlo's case, the students in his class mocked him constantly, and that can really hurt. But there is always one person at least who has a good heart, and in this ...

We purchased this book as a gift for my Mother. She had taken Hungarian lessons as a young girl growing up in Pennsylvania and had friends and relatives to speak Hungarian to until about 20 years ago. This book was purchased for her to use on an upcoming trip we are making this summer to Hungary. She is so pleased with the book's content that she read it cover to cover reacquainting herself ...

Excellent Presentation of Distinctive National Cuisine
`The Hungarian Cookbook' by Susan Derecskey may be one of the easiest cookbooks I have yet reviewed, as this is quite literally exactly the food I grew up on. My comfort food, as a kid, was goulash, dumplings, Hungarian crepes, strudel, cabbage and noodles, and chocolate walnut cake, each and every one of these dishes made in exactly the same way as described in this book. All of these dishes ...

classic history of Hungarian uprising of 1956
This is probably the best history of the 1956 Hungarian uprising against the Soviets. The book was written after the Soviet Union collapsed and the Russian government release material from the Soviet Archives. So the reader gets the story both from the point of view of the Hungarian patiots and the Politburo in Moscow. A tale of great courage and great savagery. Sebestyen is a marvelously lucid ...

Newman ur, we hardly knew Ud.
I was fortunate to have Erika Solyom as my professor. I believe Colloquial Hungarian is the best book on the market to teach the difficult language of Hungarian: it is easy to follow, uses relevant and sensible dialogs and life situations, and uses cultural elements in an accessible plot. The book is very dense, covering most grammatical rules found in the Hungarian language; however, this allows ...

The Discontents of Youth in a Disintegrating World
In their final year of high school four boys - Abel, Tibor, Bela and Ernö - form a gang. It is May of 1918, the month of their graduation. Their nation (the Hungarian half of the Dual Monarchy) has plans for them - they will be conscripted, given only cursory training, and thrown into the battle-lines of one of the war's lethal fronts as hapless cannon fodder. They may be facing death in the ...

Good, but could improve
I bought this book for an upcoming trip to Budapest, because I am a foodie and I want to know where to go! This book has two major drawbacks, which are easily addressed in subsequent editions. First, there are no maps of any kind anywhere in the book. So unless you know Budapest very very well, you will be lost and have no idea where these yummy restaurants are. I had to map them on ...

Great Book, Difficult Language but AMAZING Appendices!
This is a stellar book on the most difficult of the major wine producing countries to study (up there with Italy and Greece). On key fact is that the Hungarian language is so difficult for English speakers to pronounce. Liddell is my hero for his pronunciation guide in the appendices as well as the other appendices showing production, exchange and conversion charts and more! Now when I read ...

wonderful and important
In the tradition of first person accounts that somehow find humor amidst the brutality of childhood, the White King is every bit as fun to read as Tibor Fischer's Under the Frog, Richard Price's The Wanderers, Junot Diaz' Drown, even Catcher in the Rye. This is one of the best books of the year.

Excellent conversational package
Because I studied Latin, Romance languages pose no problem for me. I have tried to learn Turkish and Czech for trips to those countries but did not progress very well with the programs I tried. I decided to give Pimsleur a shot at Hungarian because of a recommendation in a book. I had tried another program and got nowhere. I'm over half way through the basic program and am very pleased. Stephen Nasser recently came to my company to speak about his account during the Holocaust and I have just finished reading his book. I have to admit that I wasn't exactly motivated in the beginning to read the book as I like to stay away from depressing subjects such as the Holocaust, but once I got started it was hard to put down. Reading much like a diary - which is what his writings are ...
