Hutterites: Lives and Images of a Communal People4 reviews
Samuel Hofer

Ex Machina Pub Co, 1998

mb00476@mb.sympatico.ca from Manitoba, what Biases?
Your review of Hofer's book: Hutterites: Lives and Images of a Communal People is a biases within of itself because you are a hutterite. It is my understanding that a lot of Brethren Members (hutterites) are against Hofer's work because it reveals the nature of your "authentic" culture, of which you do not want the "outside world" to know about. Should you have taken note of the bibliographic ...

Hutterite: A World of Grace3 reviews
Rod Slemmons, Sieglinde Geisel

Edition Stemmle, 1998

The photographs calm your spirit like a meditation.
This is a book to return to over and over again. I've opened it in the midst of a hectic, demanding day and the clean black and white images made me feel refreshed and hopeful. The photographs embody a kind of peace I think we all yearn for.

My Hutterite Life1 review
Lisa M. Stahl

Farcountry Press, 2003

Delightful and informative book
My Hutterite Life by Lisa Marie Stahl is a delightful book. Lisa began writing columns for Montana newspapers as a young Hutterite teenager. She quit writing for publication(temporarily, I hope) when she married a man of her faith and moved to Canada at the age of 20. This book is a compilation of some of her columns which explain the lifestyle of Hutterites, an Anabaptist religious group who ...

Rachel, a Hutterite Girl2 reviews
Rachel Maendel

Topeka Bindery, 1999

ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL!
In this day when children are often burdened with the demands of a materialistic culture, Rachel Maendel reminds us of the lost simple joys of yesteryear's childhood. She shares true stories of her youth, having grown up on a communal farm of the Hutterite sect in Western Canada. Children are seen as a gift from God. Extended family life is the norm. The natural rhythm of farm life ...

An absolute lifesaver when needing research material!
I got this book to aid in research for a University course I was taking. This book is by far the most complete work out there, on the Hutterite faith. 400+ pages!! It takes you from the birth of Hutterite society to present day! An Amazing body of work!

The Hutterite people (People of our land)1 review
Don C Barnett

Western Extension College Educational Publishers, 1977

Excellent overview
This booklet, consisting of approximately 70 pages, is a brief and readable overview of the history, customs and beliefs of the Hutterites. Although specifically geared towards young adults, this booklet is an excellent introduction for the adult, as well.

Hutterites of Montana3 reviews
Laura Wilson

Yale University Press, 2000

Artfully Told
Once in awhile, you find a book that outstrips others and stands on its' own. This isn't the glam photography of Annie Liebowitz, the sexually overt Herb Ritts, nor is it the intentionally odd portraiture of Diane Arbus. This is an artist in the same league as Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Galen Rowell, and Phil Borges. Simply put, Laura Wilson is a thoughtful artist, whose vision and ...

Folk Furniture of Canada's Doukhobors, Hutterites, Mennonites and Ukrainians2 reviews
John & Michael Rowan Fleming

University of Alberta, 2004

Understanding from a Real World Practitioner
The amount of treasure expended as aid to developing countries since World War II has been immense. If it had worked, there should have been no poverty left in the world, democracy should have developed everywhere, and the whole world a better place to live. Needless to say, it hasn't worked out that way. Instead we are seeing countries facing massive amounts of debt that will never be repaid. ...

The Prairie People: Forgotten Anabaptists1 review
Rod Janzen

UPNE, 1999

Anabaptist Forgotten or Unknown
This is an interesting enough book. If you are interested in Anabaptist (Amish, Mennonite, Hutterite, and the like) this is an interesting read. I did have a little difficulty with parts of the work, wondering if the history as painted by the author was fact or individual assessment tainted by preconceived ideas or ideals. Just the same, it is a helpful book.

On the Backroad to Heaven: Old Order Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, and Brethren (Center Books in Anabaptist ...6 reviews
Donald B. Kraybill, Carl Desportes Bowman

The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002

The best book on some of the most interesting peoples around
As a person always curious about lifestyles different from my seemingly mundane existince in suburban Melbourne, the Amish and Old Order Mennonites, with their resistance to technology and extremely gentle and peaceful beliefs, have always fascinated me. Although other books, such as the "People's Place" series, actually offer a good deal of useful information about specific topics relevant to ...
