A Different World
If you're intrigued about people and society, how different groups form, how identity is shaped and created, read this. Anthropology isn't just about societies in the so-called Third World; it's about the so-called civilized world too, as Dr Valentine shows. Read it and be intrigued.

Good for university classrooms
Excellent variety of multi-cultural American writing. Offers new materials for thinking about immigration, immigrants' experiences, etc. I've used it in an Introduction to Fiction class at a university with good success.

Thinking off the page
I actually heard Dr. Butler Bass present this material at a clergy day in my diocese last year. Her work is both insightful and challenging. I especially appreciate her willingness to admit the shortcomings of her theories, not just gloss over them. The three-dimensional grid was particularly helpful, especially for those of us in the lower left quadrant -- progressive emergers. It can seem ...
Dream: Re-imagining Progressive Politics in an Age of Fantasy

Dream on: You must read this book.
While there is a lot of rumbling on the political left (or anyone who is not fanatically right) solutions are rarely put forward. The less than inspiring way that the Democrats triumphed this November (by default) makes this clear. Duncombe's book is one of the first books that takes as its model the possibility that joy and dreams can be fundamental in not only creating the models for solutions ...
Imagining Robert: My Brother, Madness, and Survival: A Memoir

A Moving Memoir
I absolutely loved this book. Reviewers here have complained that it's not just about Robert, but about the author and his life. I loved that fact. I too have a brother w/ a mental illness, and I too am a teacher and I like to write. I found all of these stories -- the story of Robert, Jay's connection to him, Jay's struggle to tell Robert's story, and Jay's life as a father -- all equally ...
Imagining America in 2033: How the Country Put Itself Together after Bush

Herbert J. Gans
University of Michigan Press
, 2008
A liberal manifesto for our age.
I have urged my friends who share my vision of a just and prosperous USA to read this book carefully. Gans is essentially writing a manifesto of what should and should not be done, but this book reads more like a novel about three real and interesting people--future presidents of the USA--and not like a lecture on political phiilosophy. Strongly recommended.

Imagining Egypt review
This is a great book whether you're a new or confirmed Egyptophile. The artwork is fabulous, especially the recreations of ancient sites. The information is clear without being condescending; a good read for anyone interested.

Very insightful - brings history to reality
Very insightful - brings history to reality; I'm at Amazon now looking for other books by this author. She has fit so many details found from so many places to truly work a story. The author, like "the General" herself, is an excellent story teller. I couldn't wait to read more each night! Too, I liked that the author used third person to tell the story in an artful way, allowing me to both ...
Imagining the Future: Science and American Democracy
Yuval Levin
Encounter Books
, 2008
An examination of the meaning of science and technology for American democracy, comparing in particular the contrasting ways liberals and conservatives have thought about science, tradition, and the future.
British America, 1500-1800: Creating Colonies, Imagining an Empire (Hodder Arnold Publication)
Steven Sarson
A Hodder Arnold Publication
, 2005
This book combines the histories of colonies and empire-usually distinct fields of inquiry-in a sweeping introduction to and interpretation of the British-American New World, arguing that while settlers created colonies, the early empire remained a largely imaginary construct. This account examines the way in which the New World was invented and offers a convincing analysis of the loss of the First British Empire.

Too much
I am a huge Lucy Maud Montgomery fan and have read anything I can find on this author. Dr. Epperly, the author of this book is without a doubt a leading authority on LMM. While I appreciate the thought behind this book, I just did not think that it translated all that well to paper. I thought that by reading this book, I would get into Maud's world - understand her more - be able to live ...
Imagining Religion: From Babylon to Jonestown (Chicago Studies in the History of Judaism)

Analytical genius
Jonathan Z. Smith is the enfant terrible of the History of Religions discipline, although he's no longer young. From his first essays (collected in Map Is Not Territory) to his more recent musings in To Take Place and Drudgery Divine, he has outraged, stimulated, challenged, and restructured the study of religion in the modern academy. Each essay here is a little gem, and should be read and ...

Myths and Half-Truths
Mr. Kramer's books are always entertaining and provocative and this one is no exception. His knowledge of Spanish history is vast and his prose style is clear and agreeable. His point of view is often, if not always, diametrically opposed to that of the majority, thence the appeal his books have for me even, when I do not agree with his conclusions. The myths he examines in this book have been ...
Lincoln & Davis: Imagining America, 1809-1865 (American Political Thought)

Two of the Same Halves
There are so many books on Abraham Lincoln, that choosing one can be extremely daunting. But this books presents the two candidates for the Presidency in 1860, one for the USA and the othe, the CSA. Clearly, Lincoln is presented, and rightfully so, as a man whose morals play a large role in the great man he becomes. For Davis, his morals, as conditioned by his Southern upbringing, lay the path ...

Very Late Arrival !!!!
I just wanted to say that Amazon didn't make clear that the book I ordered would come from the U.K. They also didn't make clear that why pay for 2 day shipping when the book takes a month and a half to arrive. They might ship in two days but that's when they receive it. So they take your money for expedite shipping for no reason. Extremely disappointed !!!

My friend, and all that...
My friend, who dropped by my office to take me out for dinner, saw the Imagining Ourselves book on my desk. "What's this?" she asked. "I just got it from Amazon, take a look" I said. "I don't think I'm gonna like it", she said, "all these books about women empowerment and all, I never connect with all this." My friend is a scientist. With her PhD in biology, working at an Ivy League university ...

Nature's State: Imagining Alaska as the Last Frontier
Susan Kollin
The University of North Carolina Press
, 2001
An engaging blend of environmental theory and literary studies, Nature's State looks behind the myth of Alaska as America's "last frontier," a pristine and wild place on the fringes of our geographical imagination. Susan Kollin traces how this seemingly marginal space in American culture has in fact functioned to alleviate larger social anxieties about nature, ethnicity, and national identity. Kollin pays special attention to the ways in ...
Imagining Vietnam and America: The Making of Postcolonial Vietnam, 1919-1950 (The New Cold War History)

Mark Philip Bradley
The University of North Carolina Press
, 2000
ironies abound
From an already fragmentary record, Bradley describes a Vietnam in its last years of French and Japanese colonialism. A sense of piquancy pervades the narrative. We see how American officials tried to wean the French off their colonial role and to encourage indigenous ["native"] Vietnamese participation in their country's economy. There is also shown admiration by the Vietnamese of American ...
