Godel's Theorem: An Incomplete Guide to Its Use and Abuse

An excellent choice for courses that cover the philosophy of science and mathematics
Godel's Incompleteness Theorems were a revolution in mathematics and there were repercussions and misunderstandings that rippled out into other fields. The main theorem first appeared in an Austrian journal in 1931 and can be stated very simply. In any consistent formal system S within which it is possible to perform a minimum amount of elementary arithmetic, there are statements that can ...

Fantastic!
Mr. Fry gives us a merry chase through history, catching up with old, favourite composers and giving us the dirt on what was in, what was hot, what was now in the lives of these musical geniuses. The author's love for his subject is obvious, and his knowledge and singular wit will (may I use the word, Stephen?) edutain you to no end.

For those who suffer with grief...
"This Incomplete One: Words Occasioned by the Death of a Young Person" Edited by Michael d. Bush. This book is a collection of sermons by known, and lesser known, theologians, who went through the terrible journey of losing a child. It is written from a Christian context, even so, if you are looking for something deeply theological or philosophical, this book is not for you. If, however, you ...

a good resource
This book is an excellent resource. It is written so that it leads people to "dip into" it for information that you may or may or may not know; or are unsure of. There are pictures, photographs, charts, and the style is light. Its fascinating to just browse through. I got one for each of my college aged sons, and I believe they both got some good use out of it.

Harris fills in the gaps. (and there were lots of gaps)
Think the mainstream media is going to keep you up to date on all this stuff? No. In fact, I sometimes wonder if they prefer to keep you in the dark. They certainly don't tell us much about some of these conflicts. I followed Bob Harris's blog when he traveled around the world researching this book. When I came across it recently, I bought it without hesitation, knowing that I was going to be ...

An Incomplete Revenge
Jacqueline Winspear's portrayal of an unusually complicated woman was the best yet of any of the Masie Dobbs mysteries. taking place in post war England. Maisie is caught up in a mystery surrounding a country village, and what seemed like planned arson. The complexity of Winspear's characters provided a many-faceted tale of suspence. Maisie's asistant, a war vereran and young father who was ...

Erudite Yet Entertaining
This is an extremely erudite look at some of the lost works of world literature, from the ancient world down to the near present. To fully appreciate some of Stuart Kelly's observations the reader ought to have been immersed in the subject for a long lifetime. Obviously very few of us have had anything like that sort of exposure, yet Kelly's work holds interest for us as well. First, Kelly ...

nice concise account of incomplete data on an introductory level
The author is a good writer and this series is an excellent series of monographs on probability and statistics. The book is well-written and concise. It is useful for beginners and useful as a reference for researchers. It is not comprehensive and coverage is not in depth. If you seek detail, depth and a treatment of many aspects of the methodology and modeling of incomplete data Little and ...

Inflammation of the foreskin reminds me of your smile. . . .
This is a book for every Monty Python fan out there! It is really excellent, and includes almost all the songs, excluding a few of the lesser ones like "Sgnt Duckie's Song" and "The Window Cleaner Song" but just about everything else is in there. Admittedly, it's a bit annoying about some of the music being illigeble, such as "Eric the Half A Bee" appearing in a sphere shape, and "Bing Tiddle ...

Unification
You will find in this book the roots of anti-Semitism in the Church revealed and a prophetically proclaimed outline for the next great move of Father. It will also reveal that the Church is incomplete without Jewish believers coming together with non-Jewish believers, as they did in the Book of Acts. Most people don't realize that the first apostles and leaders were Jews who evangelized the ...

The subject of these two volumes is non-linear filtering (prediction and smoothing) theory and its application to the problem of optimal estimation, control with incomplete data, information theory, and sequential testing of hypothesis. The book is not only addressed to mathematicians but should also serve the interests of other scientists who apply probabilistic and statistical methods in their work. The theory of martingales presented in the ...

A Brilliant Work of Imaginary Scholarship
Put this one on the shelf next to your old Borges paperbacks and Pavic's Dictionary of the Khazars. It is a wonderfully written and illustrated (both with pictures and scores) scholarly history of a wholly imaginary historical episode: the rise, flourishing, and ruthless suppression of a tradition of violin music played at funerals. Kriwaczek tells of his discovery of the almost forgotten ...

Short and sweet
This is the review of "An Incomplete History of World War II". Edwin Kiester Jr. has written a book on World War I as well, with a similar title. Amazon has listed the World War I book title with the World War II picture of the jacket. I believe I've caught the only mistake in the listing of a book on this site. At any rate, this simple, yet elegantly written book is an entertaining and ...
