The Adventures of Amir Hamza (Modern Library)
This book is delightfully written as a translation from the Urdu text. As I read, it has the flowery descriptiveness of the old Urdu stories, leaving me with a feeling as if I was reading an Urdu book. It is well written, is interesting and the story is captivating. This book is one to keep in your personal library and pass on as a gift to family members. As our Urdu language seems to be ...

Beautiful and celebratory poetry
Only knowing Hafiz, through this book I am not in a position to judge whether the book does him justice or whether too much of the tranlator's own poetical and mystical nature has come into play. What I can say is, that I truly enjoyed reading it as many of the poems appealed to my heart and provoked some reflection of what we do. Like this short poem called "Find a better job": Now That All ...

Nothing Better
I've read other translators of Hafiz, Rumi, etc. and while I do not speak the original language, I cannot imagine a more truthful and present-time translation of Hafiz totally in keeping with the spirit of his words. I am a poet myself and the good ones make meanings that transcend their own words. Ladinsky taps into Hafiz's meanings and the joy that bubbles up from it is contagious. Every ...

One of the must have books on Rumi!
I love this book! It is one of those books I fall into when I've had a tough day and I just need to center myself. I highly recommend MANY MANY poems in here but a favorite would have to be Baby Pigeon on pg. 32

Very good...but incomplete
I enjoy using this dictionary, however there it is plagued in incompletenesses. For example, on p.11, the Transliteration Guide is incomplete. Otherwise a pretty good source; wish it included more words.

Divine Hafiz
A lifelong fan (dare I say devoted?) to Hafiz and his many works, this book is a must have. Nothing compares to reading Hafiz in Persian, but this book comes very, very close. Hafiz is enlightening, spiritual, refreshing, and above all, very full of wisdom. His works are truly magical, especially considering after all these years, people are still compelled to his work and mystified by his ...

Massive scholarship, generally convincing
In this massively researched book, Anthony brings together hundreds of findings from archaeology and linguistic studies to support his thesis about the origins of Indo-European language and culture. The book is not easy reading for the non-expert; many chapters are dense with information, particularly about archaeological finds associated with particular cultures or horizons. Yet the ...

Elegant, Sacredly Sensual - This one is a Keeper Squared
Wow. I sat reading this elegantly slim volume in my local Barnes and Noble and I am surprised I didn't float away in ecstacy. I felt completely engulfed in spiritual inspiration, I felt transfixed by a sacred sensuality - and all this while sitting in the children's section no less. Rumi, as those of us who adore his work know, is a one-of-a-kind. Deepak Chopra is another one-of-a-kind. ...

Wisdom of the Sufis - for any faith.
The writings of the Sufis are, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful and challenging spiritual works in existence. Rumi's works are currently undergoing something of a renaissance in the Western world but the name of Farid Ud-Din Attar is not as well known. This is unfortunate, since The Conference of the Birds provides, in my opinion, a much better insight into Sufi philosophy than the ...

a great personal reflection on rumi
a great book for what is was meant to be...a poignant reflection on rumi by two of the great post-modern "rumi-ists" ! if you want pure rumi, then go for one of the pure collections. our other reviewer must have thought this was something else. obviously.

Who are the Indo-Europeans.
This book is a definate must read for anyone who is studying the Indo-Europeans or the Celts or any culture derived from the Indo- Europeans. It is a look at a language, history and culture of a great people. The author has spent time on the documentation of the sources and uses a great deal of resources which are in and of themselves interesting.

Great for lots of helpful sayings especially for someone who wants to know basics for touring purposes
This books is great for a tourist. Not a book you would want to learn from. I totally disagree with TRAVELER'S comment. The pronunciation is actually excellent. It even describes the way to pronounce each letter in the beginning. The system they use for pronunciation is by far one of the easiest I have seen in all the time I have studied Hindi. So pay attention to what everyone else thinks ...

a great way to learn basic farsi vocab
If you're just starting to learn Farsi and you're looking to learn very basic Farsi vocab, then this is a good choice. There are multiple exercises for each group of vocab, which really helps the learning process. I wish they'd make more books like this, especially ones for sentence building. But this is really good for just vocab.

As Near Perfection As One Could Ask
This beautiful and scholarly tome has more facts per inch in its 149pp than in almost any other work in my library. The second paperback edition is easily worth three times its cover price, and except for one flaw, (minor, and noted by other reviewers) this work is as near perfection as one could ask in a work of linguistic reference. First, in praise: To the scholar (or layman) studying ...
