One of the Best UML Reference Books On the Market Today & Very Portable
When searching for a very good UML reference book last year, I happened upon the book entitled "UML 2.0 in a Nutshell" by Dan Pilone with Neil Pitman. The book, which measures a mere 8.9 by 6 by 0.8 inches, is both lightweight and highly portable; which is one of the reasons that I decided to purchase a copy. However, it was ultimately the content of the book, and not its compact size, that ...

Clustering is the final component of MySQL that makes it truly enterprise-level and able to compete fully with proprietary databases such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. The increased number of high-demand, high-productivity corporations and institutions choosing MySQL, including MIT, the Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and Nokia, to name a few, need the benefit of clustering databases for high performance and scalability. ...

Must read for any designer, IA, usability professional
Outstanding read about the history of how some of the things we use daily were conceptualized and designed. Moggridge interviews some of the coolest and relevant inventors of the modern (technology) era. The book hit a dry spell toward the end but finished strong. As a usability and design professional I found this book to be a good read on perspective, and to read the techniques and ...

Useful to understand the why
Mr. Galitz's reasons for using design standards and the detailed consequences of poor design are backed up by reasearch. He gives specific recommendations for standards such as typefaces, point size, label and caption styles, etc. He explains and uses a good shorthand throughout the book for items as "signal" versus "noise." This is handy to quickly distinguish between things that are ...

Great for both camps
This isn't a typical O'Reilly book, and it's definitely not an "animal" book. I think that's something that's thrown a lot of people for a loop the first time they see this book. That change is good, however, because what O'Reilly has delivered is a book whose contents will stand up much longer and be more useful than most of the books out there on any technical subject, from any publisher. By ...

Great book for data mining
I bought this book as a text book for data mining. I found this book give a solid introduction to multiple topics and a ready reference. One thing , I found though was a rather superficial treatment of very specific algorithms and a thorough treatment of general ones . Atleast the most popular specific algorithms can be detailed.
Digital Eisenman: An Office of the Electronic era (The Information Technology Revolution in Architecture)

is it worth the fight?
This book is so tightly bound you will fear ripping it to shreds just trying to open it. Once open, and it is a struggle, you will be awe-struck at the beautiful reproductions of the near-impossible structures designed by Eisenman. Galofaro cuts the architect's excessively thick theory, asking simply, "how has digital production affected his theory based practice?" As tiny as this book is, it is ...

Great book, but you need additional literature if you want a high score
I have just finnished exams 101 (730 points/800) and 102 (740 points/800). Theese seems to be quite good scores, according to the LPI website, and i owe it much to LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell, 2nd edition. The book is well written, with lots of relevant information if you want to pass the LPI level 1 exams. And even better, its a very nice book to use as reference in system ...

Good
I am a couple years into a PhD in bioinformatics, but this is the book I started with. I knew some biology and some computer science, but I still found a lot of the databases, etc. confusing and the field has a decided lack of simplified documentation (though it is getting better). Of course, bioinformatics is a pretty broad topic and no book could possibly cover everything. If you do not ...

Essential to the efficient use of Mathematica
Iin terms of speed and functionality, the program Mathematica is the most amazing program I have ever used. It is an indispensable tool for research in many areas of the sciences and mathematics. From the evaluation of mathematical formulas to the graphing of three-dimensional data over time, it can handle almost anything that you need to process or analyze. Surprisingly user-friendly for such a ...

Very Practical Book
I have found this book to be very useful with practical examples and case studies. I felt that as an engineer I needed to know how to use software(to save time)along with the formulas that work in it.This book satisfies that, using a very common software EXCEL..what could be better than this. I strongly recommend this book for a high level course in statistics.

I performed some programming in Visual Basic 6 a few years ago and then my job was changed so that I was maintaining a Unix program for a few years, which entailed putting fires out each day and very little programming of any type. A few months ago I was fortunate enough to get transferred to a great job programming web sites and some Windows applications. I've been able to write some fairly ...

Discovering Knowledge in Data: An Introduction to Data Mining

conveys basic ideas
The book gives a good introduction to data mining. Larose manages to cover the important techniques used to analyse data and turn it into knowledge. These include neural networks, various types of clustering. Most importantly, perhaps, he discusses how to try various models and how to evaluate the effectiveness of each model. The book's length is insufficient for many readers to actually get ...

A too-little-known classic
Designing human-computer interfaces is still an art, learned best by creating many interfaces and carefully observing how real users interact with them. However, there are many tools from cognitive psychology that, if understood and applied, can yeild at least two benefits. First, by learning what is known about how humans operate, you can avoid many pitfalls in design. Second, you can make ...
