Grammar, A Step-By-Step Approach Homework Booklet, Grades 7 to 8 (Homework Booklets)
Instructional Fair, 1999
A good addition to our homeschool curricula
We homeschool, so good workbooks are a major part of our curricula. I definitely have seen my share of workbooks written well and those that I find confusing and contradictory of the way we teach. This workbook is easy to understand and in an easy format that keeps my child's interest. We will be getting others from the same publisher.
Vital Point Strikes: The Art and Science of Striking Vital Targets for Self-defense and Combat Sports
Turtle Press, 2008
A very informative book
Vital Point Strikes by Sang H. Kim is a thorough book on the vulnerable spots of the human body. It has sections on both Western and Eastern views on vital areas. It talks of the nervous system of Western anatomy and the body's meridians of Eastern medicine, and shows a correlation between the two. It is well illustrated with many anatomical drawings, and it has many photos illustrating striking ...

The book demonstrates how using the medical model of collecting data in rounds can be applied to educational problems of practice. Such methods can provide a data-driven way to improve teaching and learning. Figure Drawing: Design and Invention
Terrific problem solver for figure invention
The author, an excellent artist, takes us through the whole process of drawing the figure from initial gesture sketch, through structure and architectonics, down to the finished, rendered drawing. The emphasis throughout is on creating animated, lively and lifelike figures, full of movement and intent. The explanatory diagrams of anatomical form clarify the most complex muscular forces -- the ...

Play Ukulele Today!: A Complete Guide to the Basics Level 1 (Play Today Instructional Series)
Hal Leonard Corporation
The best beginner book.
I have looked at several beginner books for the ukulele and this is the most concise and comprehensive. It begins with the most simple of lessons on each string and quickly has you playing chords and scales while learning fun tunes. The companion CD is perfectly matched and provides extra information. You can't beat the price and the material. A+.
The Barefoot Running Book: A Practical Guide to the Art and Science of Barefoot and Minimalist Shoe Running
Barefoot Running University, LLC
Great book on barefoot/minimalist shoe running for all levels
I am new to the concept of barefoot running and became interested in it when reading a blog post of someone I follow which led me to read the book, Born to Run. I loved the idea of simplicity and minimalism with barefoot running. Through web research I stumbled upon Jason's website and took a chance on buying his book and am very glad that I did. It is very well written and organized taking the ...

Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within
Effortless Mastery: Liberating The Master Musician Within
Kenny Werner's book, "Effortless Mastery", should be must read- ing for every musician, beginner or professional. It is full of techniques to get you to pick up your instrument that has been sitting in the corner, collecting dust. I honestly believe that Kenny knows more about teaching music than anyone on the planet. I have read it twice and I am getting ready to read it again. ...
Day-to-Day Assessment in the Reading Workshop: Making Informed Instructional Decisions in Grades 3-6
Scholastic Teaching Resources (Theory an
Essential for your Workshop!
I am a relatively new recruit to the workshop model and this book is absolutely essential to provided guidance for teachers making that transition. Everything from the importance of an engaging read-aloud (as opposed to the students sitting there passively listening) to student-initated conferences and groups to mini-lessons are included in this great resource. It could be a quick read but I ...

Golf My Way: The Instructional Classic, Revised and Updated
Simon & Schuster
The book has become my bible
The instruction in this book is excellent. Jack breaks down his golf swing into terms that make it easy to follow. I've played gold for over 40 years and it wasn't until I read his book that I really learned how to swing a golf club properly which has resulted in my hitting the ball consistently and effectively. I first got the book from the library and then purchased it so that I could ...
Alfred's Teach Yourself to Play Piano (Book & DVD) (Teach Yourself Series)
Great book for the adult learner
I bought this book to see if I could teach myself the basics of playing the piano. It works great for me. I am a visual learner. Yes, I like pictures. The book has drawings of correct finger position and placement. There are basic scales, songs, and lots of skill building exercises. I am very pleased with my purchase. I would buy this book again. It works for the adult who has never played the ...
Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses
title doesn't do it justice
This is a wonderfully comprehensive look at research in the field of course design and instruction. I work with faculty and the research that this book provides for the work that we do is crucial. I am able to cite research and underscore the importance of what I have been teaching then all along. The title of this book makes it seem less important than it really is. This book is about ...

Start Sailing Right!: The National Standard for Quality Sailing Instruction (US Sailing Small Boat ...
U.S. Sailing Association
Gets you going quickly
I'm new to dinghy sailing and I just didn't have the time to take a sailing class. This book was just the right size and speed to get me going. You're not going to learn the history of sailing and you're not going to learn about rigging a twenty five foot sloop. Instead, it just focuses on the mechanics of dinghy sailing and also covers material that falls into FAQ type stuff like "How do I ...
Words on the Vine: 36 Vocabulary Units on Root Words
Instructional Fair, 1999
Great intro to Word Roots
I love this book! I have used it with 3 of my children so far and plan next year to use it wth my youngest. Each of the 36 lessons has 3 activity sheets plus suggestions for further activities. There are a couple of levels of activities, so you could easily return to the book later and do the harder ones as review. In addition, each lesson has other words listed that also share the root, so ...

The 100+ Series Mixed Skills in Math, Grades 7-8: Keeping Students Sharp With Daily Practice and Review
Instructional Fair, 1999
An Excellent Source of Math Problems
The nice thing about this review book is that the skills really are mixed. I have used all of the books in this series when tutoring students in math. The constant repetition of basic skills helps to reinforce them in the minds of the students, even as they progress to more advanced ideas. One caution. This book does not explain how to do the problems. There are no examples. It is simply a ...
