A Classic Epic of Breathtaking Scope
Every two or three years, I have brought out Shogun and reread it which now amounts to about twelve times. Every time, the book takes on new dimensions and tones. The story of John Blackthorne, a Dutch seafarer who makes it across the Pacific to the Japans, is an enthralling and embracing story. One of the most engrossing elements of the story is Blackthorne's struggle with Japan's language and ...

Here, This is For Pearl Harbor!
Max Hastings has done it again. He has thrown convention to the side. His take of the final year of the battle in the Pacific during World War II is indeed a breakthrough. Just as he did in his take on the end of the European War of World War II, Hastings relied on the people who fought in the fields of these epic times. Obviously Hastings couldn't have done these interviews all over the ...

Great even for non-dummies!
Don't let the title fool you -- this is the best book I've seen for explaining how to make sushi rolls for the first time. I had never done one before, or even seen it done, and this book had me making rolls in just a few minutes. No, they weren't all perfect, but practice helps too!

WARRIORS BIBLE
Musashi, like every great warrior, knew that strategy was as important as tactics and techniques in combat. This book will teach you things that were learned in combat and will enhance your survival potential on the battlefield, street and life. It is not the easiest book to interpret and understand, but that hardly matters, as for the information in this book is worth your time and effort. ...

Japan immersion beautifully created, but too much denial perhaps!
This is an outstanding and highly creative literary work; wonderful storytelling of the life of a Tokyo family pre, during and post the Second World War. Two brothers, two sisters, elderly grandparents, a sad mask maker and few other interesting characters are thrown into the mix. Sumo wrestling is the passion of the older brother and also of his grandfather, so there is a lot to know about Sumo, ...

Fantastic
I love to crochet gifts for people and this is the perfect solution for making a gift that's not your typical baby blanket. The illustrations are great and the directions are very straight-forward. My one complaint is that I'm not a very good sewer, but practice makes perfect! These are the cutest amigurumi I've ever seen! Love it, Love it! You don't have to be an expert to make them either. ...

Repairman Jack at his best
I must say I am surprised at the relatively negative to mediocre reviews this new RJ novel has received. For my money, this is a legit contender for the best book in the series. I would say that it is not a good time to jump aboard the RJ train, this book is really a continuation of the last few, and as the author warns, it is really a link in the chain of what is basically an Uber-arch that ...

Who would have thought?
North American comic fans in the 1960's knew Batman. You could turn the TV on, and watch Adam West/Burt Ward battle crime on a daily basis. The Green Hornet entertained us for a couple of seasons too. Look at the newsstands, and we could find the comic books everywhere. Bob Kane was getting credited with artwork, but Neal Adams, Carmine Infantino, and Gil Kane were starting to change the ...

An Emotive, Powerful and Well-Researched Piece
I had known about this book for quite some time, but only got around to reading it recently. You need quite a bit of mental fortitude to get through such a book; it is graphic in the extreme. I stealed myself for the effort, but got quite upset by about page 80. The accounts of savagery - gang rape almost always followed by murder, dousing people with gas and setting them alight, bayoneting ...

More useful than you can possibly imagine!
It's certainly about time we had something from Japan that goes beyond the famous "101 Useless Japanese Inventions" (funny, though). Now we have "Very useful Japanese tricks." I really like how Lisa tells us why the tricks work as well. And the vignettes for how the situations might arise are so funny! I've had this book for several months now, and it only gets more and more useful and fun. ...

The Most Thoroughly Researched History I've Ever Read!
Shattered Sword by Parshall and Tully is simply breathtaking, the most thoroughly researched and lucidly thought out history of an event that I have ever read. Setting out to tell the story of Midway primarily from the Japanese side they have created the new standard of that crucial battle in the dark days of 1942 that shines as an example of scholarly effort without parallel. First these ...

NEEDED SOME SUNLIGHT ON THIS PRIVATE ARMY
Good job by the writer in bringing to our attention the seriousness of a growing private army, and once again, a possible crusade "under the banner of God." No doubt that the members are "tough guys" and trained and proficient, and can just about handle any emergency, but the whole concept of our government is keeping the miitary under civilian control; and once again,Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, ...

Beautiful
A delightful story of a chinese teen, sent to japan on the eve of WW2 to recuperate after getting tuberculosis. He meets his father's servant who he gets to know and the locals, finding them friendly and welcoming even with the war. He finds the simple way of life, instead of being boring, fills his days and he is bereft when the war forces him to leave. A wonderful piece of prose, this ...

Business and Martial Arts
The book written by the samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi circa 1645 is considered a classic treatise on military strategy, and it enjoys an audience considerably broader than only that of martial artists: for instance, some business leaders find its discussion of conflict and taking the advantage to be relevant to their work. The term "Ichi School", which is referred to in the book, Go Rin No ...

Inspiring
For people looking to have a more balanced lunch, this book can be an inspiration. Why not make the lunch box colorful in content AND nutrition? A lot of the pictures feature boxes with fruits that are not only eye-catching but also appetizing. Typical American lunchbox is so boring, making people think that American mothers do not have nutrition knowledge and practice.
