Bees (First Discovery)3 reviews
Gallimard Jeunesse

Scholastic Inc., 1997

Very promising!
I thought I was buying this book for my son to read a few years down the road when he fell into the 4-8 age range recommended. Imagine my reaction when, at 20 months, he started to push it onto my lap every morning saying, "Bees! Bees!" Now I'm not claiming my son is some sort of prodigy. I think this book is just one of those gems that captures the interest of children exceptionally well. ...

The Ladybug and Other Insects (A First Discovery Book)5 reviews
Pascale de Bourgoing, Gallimard Jeunesse

Scholastic, 1991

An excellent introduction of insects to young people
We inherited this book from family, and our 2 year old loves it. She know all about ladybugs, pupa, larva, and aphids. She has spent lots of time looking at the pictures, and she "reads" it to herself some nights (she's memorized most of the words).

On the Farm (First Discovery Look-and-Learn Series)
Sonia Black, Gallimard Jeunesse, ...

Cartwheel, 2003

Look-and-Learn On The Farm introduces young children to farm animals, tools, machinery, plants, and more. The book contains 24 pages with dazzling art depicting various farm scenes, each one realistically painted with bright, bold, vivid colors. There are detailed scenes such as horses and cows grazing in the pasture, tractors tilling the soil, farmers milking cows, and newborn piglets nursing. Each spread is designed with a foldout page. When ...

In The Forest1 review
Gallimard-Jeunesse

Cartwheel, 2003

Great Preschool Non-Fiction Series
The First Discovery Series is a great starter non-fiction series for preschoolers. It is hard to find good non-fiction for 3-4 year olds, as they are past the picture and label type books but can't handle tons of detail. This series strikes a great balance. My 2 1/2 year old animal lover thinks they're great and has learned some interesting stuff!

Dinosaurs (Scholastic First Discovery)3 reviews

Scholastic Reference, 2007

Engaging and Informative
My three year old who is obsessed with dinos just can't get enough of this book. Its spiral binding and sturdy laminated and transparent pages stand up to the continuous reading. There is just enough information to intrigue a child without being cumbersome. The two sided clear pages are simply facinating to a young reader. This is just one of the fabulous books in the First Discovery series

The Egg (A First Discovery Book)3 reviews
Gallimard Jeunesse

Scholastic, 2004

What Came First?
Using engaging transparent pages, this book captures the imagination by explaining what happens to eggs. Relying mostly upon a chicken, the book illustrates where the egg comes from, what's inside, how the animal grows, and how the peep breaks free. Besides the chicken, the book also briefly discusses other animals that come from eggs: other birds, reptiles, fish, and crayfish. The book is a ...

Ladybugs and Other Insects (Scholastic First Discovery)1 review

Scholastic Reference, 2007

Simple, beautiful, engaging
This is one of the best books I purchased for my toddler thus far. It has stunning illustrations; the material is simple and useful - I learned a lot about lady bugs, which I didn't know. And let's face it, what kid doesn't love those critters?

Paintings (First Discovery/Art)1 review
Claude Delafosse, T. Ross, ...

Moonlight Publishing Ltd, 1998

clever, engaging, should be in print!
My younger daughter brings this book home from kindergarten every single day. She and her sister pore over it at the breakfast table. There are so many clever things about this book, things that are spot on. I love the way the pictures are displayed as if they are in a museum, and the museum-goers are doing things that echo the contents of the pictures. The transparencies that turn ...

Sports (First Discovery Books)1 review
Gallimard Jeunesse, Pierre-Marie Valat

Scholastic, 1998

Sports A First Discovery Book
All of the First Discovery Books I've seen in my capacity as a children's librarian have been wonderful, except this one. The illustrations and text are good, but very few females are shown participating in any of the sports! There are only three pictures of women: one skier with a page of her own, one sprinter with three men, and two women playing mixed doubles tennis. Cycling, fencing, ...

Dogs (Scholastic First Discovery)2 reviews, 2008

Maybe not accurate but entertaining...
My daughter is 15 mos old and has loved this book dearly for the last 6 months. Earlier on she just carried it around and looked at the photo on the front, but now she lays on the floor and avidly flips through every page. The pictures are fantastic and the pages easy to turn. She points and requests identification of the dogs in the book. I've caught her more than once kissing the pictures. ...

Fish (First Discovery Books)2 reviews

Scholastic, 1998

Educational for all ages
My 2 year old, as well as my 4 year old nephew, enjoy reading this book over and over. I, too, have learned more about the different fish in the sea! I plan to purchase four additional books in this series today, as Christmas presents.

River, The First Discovery Books (First Discovery)1 review
Jeunesse Gallimard

Scholastic Reference, 1993

WATCHING THE RIVER FLOW
. Is there a more beautiful bird than a Kingfisher? Is there a more tranquil scene than a river flowing quietly by? "The River" captures the moods and describes the creatures that live along a stream. The river is in full flood; we turn the transparent overlay and now the stream has shrunk to a trickle. A little boy is playing with his toy water wheel. We learn about the trees that grow along the ...
