The Judgment of Paris: The Revolutionary Decade That Gave the World Impressionism36 reviews
Ross King

Walker & Company, 2006

one of the best books on 19th century French painting I have read
King uses the lives of two painters and a wonderfully detailed historical context to present the roots and further development of Impressionism. I hate to use the term for such a densely written book, but it is an easy read. In addition, it is a useful reference book. I have dipped back into it several times to refresh my understanding of certain artists.

Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know?16 reviews
Philip E. Tetlock

Princeton University Press, 2006

A classic of Political Science & Cognitive Psychology
Tetlock shows conclusively two key points: First, the best experts in making political estimates and forecasts are no more accurate than fairly simple mathematical models of their estimative processes. This is yet another confirmation of what Robyn Dawes termed "the robust beauty of simple linear models." The inability of human experts to out-perform models based on their expertise has been ...

As a professional educator, it's always great to review and reread the works of the great theorists such as Piaget. I consider him to be the father of educational psychology as well as a a great cognitive theorist.

The Psychology of Judgment and Decision Making16 reviews
Scott Plous

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 1993

Scott Plous is a star. This is an inspiring text that had my brain popping.
I write this from the perspective of a social and market researcher, and thought I was quite aware of many of the nuances and pitfalls that can render our scientific research somewhat open to question. But Scott Plous, with his vivid, lively writing style, his acute logic and well chosen case studies shows what a hell of a minefield it is that we work in. The Psychology of Judgment and ...

Critique of Judgment6 reviews
Immanuel Kant

Cosimo Classics, 2007

Someday we will understand this book
The Critique of the Power of Judgment (the 3rd Critique) is the most important work in Modern philosophical aesthetics. The Guyer and Pluhar editions are to be preferred to that of Bernard, as the first two have more extenisve notes, and better translations, including of the First Introduction. The 3rd Critique presents a vision of beauty, sublimity, and art that avoids reduction of them to them ...

Critique of the Power of Judgment (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant in Translation)4 reviews
Immanuel Kant

Cambridge University Press, 2001

A fine edition
The placement of the First Introduction at the beginning of the book is very useful, providing a different feel as to the nature of the work as a whole. The relative of lack of [bracketed] comments compared to the Pluhar edition is also a plus.

Judgment of Paris: California vs. France and the Historic 1976 Paris Tasting That Revolutionized Wine48 reviews
George M. Taber

Scribner, 2006

Best History of California Winemaking
I bought this book thinking is was all about the 1976 Tasting in Paris but it turns out that this book is really the history of California Winemaking and all of the characters that have put California Wines where they are today. For the lover of California wines, this is a must read. Once you start reading, you can't put it down.

Responsibility And Judgment is a collection of previously unpublished writings from the last decade of the life of editor and World War II survivor Hannah Arendt (1906-1975). Judgment Ridge: The True Story Behind the Dartmouth Murders25 reviews
Dick Lehr, Mitchell Zuckoff

Harper Paperbacks, 2004

A Book For Those Involved With Young People
This was a powerful book that rates more than five stars, and should be read by anyone involved in working with young people. I found it to be a very disturbing book to read, and extremely difficult to put down. This is a book that school administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents should familiarize themselves with in hopes of recognizing signs of deviant behavior in young people before ...

Kingdom, Grace, Judgment: Paradox, Outrage, and Vindication in the Parables of Jesus6 reviews
Robert Farrar Capon

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2002

"Not Your Father's Oldsmobile"
There's an old saying: "Familiarity breeds contempt." So it is with the parables of Jesus. Everyone thinks they know what he is teaching. So much so, that the contempt committed is against the very heart of the gospel message. Instead of radical, liberating, and scandalous good news, we end up with warmed over ethics, served up on a bed of moralistic legalism, and covered with a layer of ...

Design Paradigms: Case Histories of Error and Judgment in Engineering3 reviews
Henry Petroski

Cambridge University Press, 1994

Towards More Successful Development
I came across this title while researching the parallels between traditional professional engineering and systems engineering. Petroski makes a compelling case for us to formally study our failures in systems engineering - not for laying blame, but in order to continually improve our processes, assumptions, beliefs, methods, and thinking patterns. Using case studies from bridge building, ship ...

The contributors, who include psychologists, economists, decision theorists, ...

Death and Judgment14 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2009

A very vivid book.
The first scene is of an accident involving a large carrier-truck in the mountains which, crashing, spills and kills its contents: the corpses of women lie in the snow, littering the mountainside like so many bright dolls. As in many Brunetti novels, justice does not light upon all the principal perpetrators of the worst crime, but on middlemen, illegally, some of whon you are glad to see go. ...
