Time for Bed156 reviews
Mem Fox

Harcourt Children's Books, 1993

First and favorite book for our twin girls!
We received this book as a gift and started reading it to the girls at bedtime when they were about 4 months old. The pictures are big and beautiful and as a parent you will never forget the words! My husband and I used to bet how far in the book we could get without yawning ourselves! Our girls are almost 3 now and they still love it. This book is a really wonderful gift for new parents!

Moo Baa La La La177 reviews
Sandra Boynton

Little Simon, 1982

It works.
This book lives up to the hype. We got it for our daughter when she was like 8-9 months old and she's grown to anticipate what the animals say by around 15 months old. She excitedly asks for this book. Lots of the Boynton titles are pretty good, but this one was a natural fit.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever128 reviews
Barbara Robinson

HarperCollins, 1972

The Best Christmas Tale Ever!
Barbara Robinson has crafted a fantastic tale of the meaning of Christmas. In this 80 page book we come to fear and love the Herdmann clan, a gaggle of 6 kids that see the world their own way, and take it on in their own terms. They are just as likely to klonk a kid in the head as ignore them. They are the "closest thing to criminals that we knew." What does this have to do with Christmas? ...

Barnyard Dance! (Boynton on Board)166 reviews
Sandra Boynton

Workman Publishing Company, 1993

A kid favorite
This book has cute illustrations and the dance "lyrics" are fun and well-written. This is one of my children's favorites and I think any child in the 1-4 range would love to have this book.

You Are Special (Max Lucado's Wemmicks)190 reviews
Max Lucado

Crossway Books, 1997

Wonderful message
My 4 year old daughter and I love this book! I love that the artwork and basic story work for younger children but the deeper message of not defining your worth by how people judge you is perfect for older children. (And a good reminder for adults, too!) It's so nice to find a book with such a positive message. We can't wait to get more from this series!

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type221 reviews
Doreen Cronin

Atheneum, 2000

Funny and Has Great Themes!
I am a first grade teacher and was able to use this book in many different ways. The students understood that cows can not type and actually understood the humor. I used the letters in the story to show how to write a letter and ask for something. With older students there is the theme of bartering and scarcity. I found MANY great ideas as an educator for the use of this book. It is great!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?372 reviews
Bill Martin

Mantra Lingua, 2003

Never Too Young to Learn to Read
Dr.Martin has demonstrated the beauty of repetition in developing vocabulary in young children. The colors will excite the toddler and instill a love of reading. His companion book, "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" follows the identical technique. However, as a childhood educator, Dr. Martin should know that snakes do not have ears and cannot hear. But Eric Carle's hissing boa ...

The Great Brain85 reviews
John D. Fitzgerald

Yearling, 1988

The magic still works for todays wordly kids
I started reading these books to my 9 year old son, after finding my old copies boxed away. I had quite forgotten them - not having seen them on bookstore shelves for 15 years - but just seeing the cover brought the sense of awe and reverence back instantly. I read these over and over from age 9 to 12. After reading 2 chapters aloud, I tucked my son in and turned off the lights. An hour later I ...

Learn Me Good69 reviews

Lulu.com, 2006

A fun read
The premise, one side of a back and forth email exchange between a first year elementary school teacher and a former co-worker, seemed a touch shaky. But as various books and TV shows have have proven for years, kids are funny. Something light and amusing fit my mood, so I decided I'd give it a try. The kid part worked. As Art Linkletter used to say,"Kids Say the Darnest Things." (You kids ...

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (Magic Maestro Music/Kids: Stories in Music)92 reviews
Virginia Lee Burton

Simon & Simon, 2004

A classic you can't knock off its pedestal (or out of its cellar!)
Seventy years after it was first published, this is still one of the first books you should buy for your child. Virginia Lee Burton's classic offers both colorful charcoal sketches and a story that is as relevant today as it was in 1939. After all, every town has a local government official full of thrift and self-importance; machinery is continually being obsoleted even though it still does ...

I Am a Bunny (Golden Sturdy Book)93 reviews
Ole Risom

Golden Books, 1990

Parents love this book too!
My 3 children all loved this book. And I loved reading it to them - over and over and over again. I recently bought this book for my grandson and I am again reading it - over and over and over again! This book is for little ones especially 2-4 years - and parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles of all ages. The text is very simple ("I am a bunny, my name is Nicolas, I live in a hollow tree") ...

The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything83 reviews
Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein

The Enchanted Self Press, 2008

The Truth (I'm a girl, I'm smart and I know everything) Review
What a fun read and it's so real. It takes me back to my own youth - how she questions what's "fair," "mean," and what true "love" means to a tween. Dr. Holstein's insight into the mind of a young girl is accurate, touching and honest. I'd recommend it for both girls and their parents as a way to begin a discussion, a time to truly listen to one another. Although there are no references to the ...

Have You Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids95 reviews
Carol McCloud

Ferne Press, 2006

Great even for the "big kids"
I love this book. I have read it with my older students (4th/5th graders so roughly 10-12 years old) and they still ask me if they can borrow it to read during reading time. The message is simple and that's what I think appeals to these children. All too often in today's world, children are NOT taught about respect at home and bullying is out of control in many schools. This book has helped my ...

Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors [McKay Chess Library for Kids]115 reviews
Robert M. Snyder

Random House Puzzles & Games, 2003

Best insructional book for anyone past the beginning stage
This is a revised edition of the book originally published in 2003. The main difference between this edition and the earlier one are: 1) The format has been changed to double column on the pages. This allows the explanations of the moves to be closer to the diagrams which accompany the explanations. 2} Some of the analysis has been updated and expanded to further help the student. 3) A result ...

Streams in the Desert for Kids: 366 Devotions to Bring Comfort108 reviews

Zonderkidz, 2010

One of my favorite devotionals
Streams in the Desert is a classic devotional that never grows old. It moves the heart and inspires the reader to a closer walk with God. I highly recommend it. It is especially good for someone with a love of the poetic as it includes moving poetry by one of my favorite poets, Annie Johnson Flint, among many others.

What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety72 reviews
Dawn, Ph.D. Huebner, 2009

A wonderfully helpful book
My 10yr old son started having anxiety issues following a long bout with illness. We did contact the local counseling center, but it was going to take 4 weeks to see the therapist (we live in a very rural area). We got this book hoping to find some way to help him deal with his worry. It made all the difference in the world. We would work on it a little at a time each day, and he would practice ...

Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy! Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind85 reviews
Michael Bradley

Harbor Press, Inc., 2002

This book saved my relationship with my teenager
If I wouldn't have found this book my daughter would be living in our detached garage because I was done dealing with her attitude, smart talk, moodiness, craziness, etc... Now I understand why she was acting the way she was acting and because of this book our relationship is better than ever. The solution was simple and I couldn't believe that the suggestions in the book actually worked, but ...
