The Cathars: Dualist Heretics in Languedoc in the High Middle Ages (The Medieval World)3 reviews
Malcolm Barber

Longman, 2000

Barber does it again-magnificent!
You'd be hard pressed to find someone who has done more scholarly work on the Templars and Cathars than Malcomb Barber. Simply stated, Barber's work, which traces the genesis of the Cathar religion from original source documents, to their ultimate demise in the 1400's. Barber begins his study with the origins of the cathars from the Manchieans to the Bogomils and either supports or refutes ...

The Rough Guide to Languedoc and Roussillon 3 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)3 reviews
Brian Catlos

Rough Guides, 2007

Very Useful Guide
I'd visited this region in 2000, and want to return there soon to live in retirement. This guide is more useful than the ones I had in 2000. It does a great job of showing the tourist where the interesting stops are, and is also rather good more generally in discussing the "good life" in this area of France. I've yet to buy a Rough Guide that disappoints.

Inquisition and Medieval Society: Power, Discipline, and Resistance in Languedoc1 review
James Buchanan Given

Cornell University Press, 2001

Readable explanation of Southern French Inquisition
Given's book discusses the papal inquisition in southern France through the lens of the inqusitors' methods and goals, attempts by others to turn the inquisition against their foes, and resistance to it by various political and religious factions. It is a good discussion not just of the papal inquisition, but of how medieval powers battled amongst each other for money and power to carry out ...

Michelin Languedoc-Roussillon, France (Michelin Maps)2 reviews

Michelin Travel Publications, 2008

Excellent map
We're headed to the Languedoc this fall and I'm glad I ordered this particular map. Many small roads and villages are listed. And it was very easy for us to map our route from Montpellier over to Caunes Minervois, the village we'll be staying in. Also shows the roads/highways to go over the border into Spain and Andorra.

Hot Sun, Cool Shadow: Savoring the Food, History, and Mystery of the Languedoc1 review
Angela Murrills

Globe Pequot, 2008

Delicious Reading
Essential reading for anyone planning a trip to the Languedoc. Part guidebook, part history, part culinary journey, part cookbook, it's also the story of a couple who actually did what many of us dream of doing: finding a second home somewhere warmer, sunnier and more relaxed, with, in this case, better food. Angie Murrills is a vivid writer with a keen eye, a warm heart and an insatiable ...

Ladder of Shadows: Reflecting on Medieval Vestige in Provence and Languedoc
Gustaf Sobin

University of California Press, 2009

Bits of late Roman coinage, the mutilated torso of a marble Venus, blue debris from an early medieval glassworks, and the powder rasped from the reputed tomb of Mary Magdalene--these tantalizing mementos of human history found scattered throughout the landscape of southeastern France are the points of departure for Gustaf Sobin's lyrical narrative. A companion volume to his acclaimed Luminous Debris, Ladder of Shadows picks up where the former ...

The Peasants of Languedoc3 reviews
Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie

University of Illinois Press, 1977

Ian Myles Slater on: Economic and Social History
Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, the author of "The Peasants of Languedoc," is a French historian whose works have had considerable exposure in English. The fascinating "Montaillou: The Promised Land of Error" (and alternate titles; 1975, translation 1978) may be the best-known of his works, as well as the most controversial among historians, based as it is on village gossip recorded by Inquisitors. ...

Patrick Moon

Profile Books, 2005

Narritive of a Year in France with Food
A narrative of a year spent inside the kitchen of an ambitious young chef in the Languedoc region of France. This is not a cookbook, it is a story of one man's dream as he follows a year of working in the kitchen, visiting suppliers, investigation that region of France (on the Med, not too far from the Spanish border). It's a story of love. Mr. Moon has clearly discovered where he wants to be and ...

Virgile's Vineyard: A Year in the Languedoc Wine Country1 review
Patrick Moon

John Murray Publishers, 2004

Better than Great
With Bill Bryson-like humor, Patrick Moon intertwines winemaking and history with a rollicking good tale. If you're lucky enough to visit this fabulous wine-producing area of France, Virgile's Vineyard will be even more entertaining. There is a not-so-subtle undercurrent of travel guide to this superbly fun story. Spanning one year, it takes the reader through the winter Mediterranean storms, the ...

Languedoc-Roussillon: The Wines and Wine Makers3 reviews
Paul Strang

Mitchell Beazley, 2002

finally a book is wonderful wine region
For years I have been searching for wine from this region, as the quality is amazing virus the amount that you have to spend. Paul Strang's book clued me into the politics of the region from the Greek and Roman times to now. It was during the Roman times that the natives of Languedoc were known for their "proverbial drunkeness." After reading this, not only do I understand this region better ...
