Still the clearest text on Linear Algebra
I was fortunate to have taken this course and Applied Mathematics from Gilbert Strang at MIT in the mid-late 1980's. We used this and his Introduction to Applied Mathematics texts. The revised edition of this text is updated and contains newer applications, and is current for today's students. The texts (both of them) were the clearest and most relevant texts in mathematics that I ever used. ...

A wonderful book
As someone who already knows the basics of the subject, I guess I'm looking at things with the benefit of hindsight. However, I needed to shore up my own knowledge of Linear Algebra and thought I might as well turn to Strang for a refresher and a different approach. The result is that I am truly pleased with this book. His writing is lively and engaging. Linear Algebra has a phenomenal ...

Useful, but need solid background in stats
This book describes important advances in statistical analysis of social science data, circa 1992. Much of this data has a natural hierarchical grouping. But traditional statistical methods proved inadequate at coping. The biggest drawback was the failure of the assumption of independence. If at the lowest level, Items I1,...,In are grouped into sets J1,...,Jm, where m To handle this, ...

A great book for students
This book is really clear. It's a lot easier to understand than the book we are using for the class and has helped me grasp the lectures better.

Incredibly Accessible
I used this book to teach myself linear algebra using a lesson plan developed by a teacher. A few things I found really helpful: Lay constantly admonishes the reader to carefully study the text, by reading and re-reading. He understands that students learning linear algebra are likely to to be embarking on more abstract/advanced mathematics in the future--and he cares enough to teach good ...

Outstanding Book
I find it ironic that my two favourite Linear Algebra texts are this book and the Axler, for they are exact opposites: Axler shuns determinants, and Shilov starts with them and builds much of his theory off them. However, there is no book I have found that has such a deep and clear exposition of determinants. The first chapter alone makes this book worth buying. However, there's an ...

When asked to recommend a supplemental linear algebra text, this is always the one
Over my career as a college educator, I have occasionally taught linear algebra and have had students ask me if I knew of a resource they could use for additional help and practice. My answer has always been to refer them to this book. Even the most abstract mathematical theory is learned by seeing problems worked through and then doing some of them on your own. As every math teacher knows, ...

I bought it used for half the price of the same book used at my college textbook, and yet when I received it the book was practically brand new. Excellent Service.

Pointless
I dont know what linear algebra class this book is supposed to follow but it is not the book I am using for my class because they do not match up in any aspect. In 7 chapters of work there has not been a single example that matched up. The examples are very limited.

One of the most FUNCTIONAL books on Improv EVER written !
This isn't going to sound like a very intelligent and well thought out review, but if you're a professional musician and have had this experience you'll appreciate it: I don't remember too much about this book, other than that after I worked through most of it I went from not really being able to solo to being able to solo... The specific text from the book is gone from my mind... but the ...

A real treasure
Linear algebra is crucial to anyone in a mathematical or technical field. To the pure or applied mathematician, it is the bread and butter -- a lot of fundamental theorems (even in quite advanced fields like algebraic geometry) ultimately come down to a calculation using linear algebra. In any case, this book is brilliant for the moderately advanced student who knows the basics (maybe ...

One of the best books on modelling
This is an important book. It is a mature, deep introduction to generalized linear models. General linear models extend multiple linear models to include cases in which the distribution of the dependent variable is part of the exponential family and the expected value of the dependent variable is a function of the linear predictor. Besides the normal (Gaussian) distribution, the binomial ...

nice recent text on mixed models
This is a very recent and authoritative treatment of classical parametric models, starting with the general linear model and extending to generalized linear models, linear mixed models and finally to generalized linear mixed models. It also has applciations to longitudinal data analysis and prediction problems. Heavy on theory and matrix algebra but not loaded with applications. Good for a ...

Simple introduction to abstract concepts
I read this book a few years ago and it's one of the most enlightening books I've read. What makes it unique is it's way of very simply communicating the basic concepts of vector spaces and linear maps between them. It's one of the few books where you usually immediately realize how to prove each lemma, proposition and theorem before even looking at the proof. Everything just comes out ...

This book contains a comprehensive treatment on the topic of matrix analysis and applied linear algebra. The concepts are clearly introduced and developed. It is rich with detailed proofs that are easy to follow. Results are summarized and clearly grouped and marked for reference. As a researcher and a practitioner, I found this book quite useful in explaining mathematical concepts without the ...

Fantastic book, with great insight
I can't speak to the entire book, as I've only made significant use of the section of matrix solvers. Having said that, his explanation of Krylov methods was the most clear and well organized I've ever seen. His book is the first I've seen that so nicely ties together all such methods. It's true that his book is probably not going to be enough if you are planning to focus on this as your research ...

Nice intuition and good coverage
The best part of this book is the first half, where the foundations of linear programming are presented in a clear yet relatively rigorous fashion, accompanied by numerous intuitive geometrical explanations of the abstract general concepts. This approach, supplementing mathematics with graphical insights, works extremely well for this topic. The quality goes down somewhat, perhaps ...

Excellent book for beginners in linear algebra
I'm going to make this simple: This book saved me! I'we been studying linear algebra past semister, and the book the teacher assigned to us really wasn't explaining things well enough. I got this book one week before the final exam, and I can surely say that it is the only reason why I passed this class! The book is very well written, and the author always seems to be ahead of your head, ...
