Index Card Games for ESL1 review
Raymond C Clark

Pro Lingua Associates, 2002

Helpful for ESL Class
When I came upon the book, Index Card Games for ESL, I was a little skeptical at first. It sounded like alot of work, or trouble. However, after reading through this book, and using it in my class, I found it to be extremely helpful in teaching english concepts very quickly, it was fun, and it was very easy. I took paper and cut it up into squares,( because I didn't have index cards) and ...

Lingua Latina: A College Companion based on Hans Orberg's Latine Disco, with Vocabulary and Grammar6 reviews
Jeanne Marie Neumann

Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Co., 2007

Chapter by chapter hand holding through the direct method
THANK YOU. I received this a month ago and I am thrilled. I am self teaching, and this resource is making it so much easier for me to understand and move through the material with confidence I am learning and understanding what I should, chapter by chapter. Many adult self learners and homeschool families have struggled with or passed on Lingua Latina because they do not have access to Latin ...

The main subject of the twenty-one long chapters is Roman history as told by ...

Lingua Latina: Pars I: Familia Romana (Latin Edition) (Pt. 1)9 reviews
Hans Orberg

Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Co., 2006

Awesome
I am doing my MFA in English at UC Irvine, where I'm also taking a Latin reading course. Reading courses usually amount to, more or less, a student standing in place while an instructor tries to throw a grammar at the student's head, hoping for a direct hit. The student is then handed some passages to translate, along with a healthy pat on the back and some words of encouragement: "Figure it out! ...

La Bella Lingua: My Love Affair with Italian, the World's Most Enchanting Language4 reviews
Dianne Hales

Broadway, 2009

A must read for Italian language lovers
For anyone who has been enchanted by the always beautiful, often frustrating Italian language and tried to grasp its basics as well as its intricacies, Dianne's tales will not only ring true but also comfort you. From obscure word etymologies to entertaining anecdotes, La Bella Lingua will keep you turning pages, nodding along in agreement, laughing, and even learning--I picked up quite a few ...

Conversation Strategies: Pair and Group Activities for Developing Communicative Competence4 reviews
David Kehe, Peggy Dustin Kehe

Pro Lingua Associates, 2004

Forgotten Topics when Teaching English Conversation
This book is great for tutoring or teaching English to intermediate or advanced learners of English. It covers topics that you forget, like how to agree or disagree with an opinion someone has suggested. It is funny as a native speaker to read these topics and realize I use these words and phrases everyday, but I would never before think to teach them to students learning to speak English. The ...

Lexicarry: Pictures for Learning Languages 3rd Edition2 reviews
Patrick R. Moran

Pro Lingua Associates, 2002

Wierd and wonderful way to learn a language
This is a marvelous collection of quirky drawings that can provide hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of interactive language learning in any language. The simplicity of the wordless scenarios is especially helpful once native speakers catch on to how the drawings work (some take a bit of getting used to, especially all the bald guys). The addition of color in this edition is worth any extra ...

Lingua Latina: Pars I--Exercitia Latina I (Latin Edition) (Pt. 1, No. 1)14 reviews
Hans H. Orberg

Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Co., 2005

A great learning technique. Dick and Jane for Latin.
Maybe it's me, but I have a hard time learning languages. I learned only one language as a child, rendering me totally and utterly monolinguistic. I've tried learning languages using various methods, but none struck me as particularly effective. So when I found the need to have some familiarity with Latin, I looked at Latin language books and courses, and rejected one after the other as being ...

The Language of the Third Reich: LTI -- Lingua Tertii Imperii: A Philologist's Notebook (Continuum Impacts)5 reviews
Victor Klemperer

Continuum, 2006

An easily-read, journalistic philology of Nazi Germany
A professor recommended this book by Victor Klemperer to me several years ago, before his 1933-45 Tagebücher were translated into English by Martin Chalmers. At the time, my apprentice German was not equal to the work in the original language, and I read it in its French translation, ably translated by Elisabeth Guillot. I have since reread it in German, and, on publication, read this ...

The Sokal Hoax: The Sham That Shook the Academy21 reviews
The Editors of Lingua Franca

Bison Books, 2000

Important history
The value of this book is not so much as a good read, but as a detailed account of a turning point in history. It is a great resource for anyone studying the history of philosophy, or the "science wars" in particular. It presents the hoax, the revelation, and the aftermath with an objective collection of the texts, correspondence, & articles as they appeared at the time. I suspect that the ...

Lingua Latina: Colloquia Personarum2 reviews
Hans Orberg

Focus Publishing, 2004

Latin for the beginner
One commenter on a previous review requested information on this 79 page book of Latin stories meant to accompany Hans Orberg's Latin text Lingua Latina. Like Orberg's text Lingua Latina, Colloquia Personarum is written entirely in Latin. Unlike Lingua Latina, which has descriptive pictures and information in the margins, much less help is given the reader, who follows the same cast of ...

Lingua Latina: Part I: Latin-English Vocabulary I (Latin Edition)6 reviews
Hans H. Orberg

Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company, 1998

The book that made me study Latin
This book pulled me into the study of Latin. I read the first two pages at the author's lingua-latina website in Denmark, and was lured by the way it allowed me to read a purely Latin text. It's addictive. The Latine Disco and Exercitia Latina were great additions, as was the CD with MP3s of the chapters being read. Once in a while, the book would subtly pre-introduce something. ...

Brasil, Lingua E Cultura: Writing and Language Laboratory Manual2 reviews
Tom Lathrop

Juan de la Cuesta, 2006

Good Exercises and no answer key
This is a fine workbook to go along with the "Brasil! Lingua e Cultura" textbook (3rd ed.). The many various exercises help to reinforce the lessons from the text. The audio lessons (free at the publisher's website) for the laboratory portion (at the end of each of the 20 chapters) are very useful. Since the book is designed for classroom use, there is no answer key included in the book.

Brasil! Lingua E Cultura8 reviews
Tom Lathrop, Eduardo M. Dias

Very colorful and useful
This third edition of Brasil! is a huge improvement over past editions. It is very colorful and useful as a textbook. Compared to other textbooks in the university store, the price is extremely reasonable.
