Straight and to the Point
The chapters on Type-2 indexes and MDC really helped me better understand how type-2 indexes improve performance now I understand what a dimension is and how to identify good candidate dimensions. Absolute OpenBSD: UNIX for the Practical Paranoid19 reviews
Michael W. Lucas

No Starch Press, 2003

The OpenBSD bible ... a must-have for security freaks
I'm no security freak, but I love the OpenBSD concept: security above all. When I took a course in Unix operating systems, I was introduced to OpenBSD, and recommended to purchase this text. Albeit outdated (it covers version 3.2, and OpenBSD is now at 4.0), the book offers an overview of all the basics, including 3 whole chapters on the pf firewall. Because of its general nature, the ...

UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers18 reviews
Uresh Vahalia

Prentice Hall, 1995

The best operating systems book in existence
A certain small and select set of books can be found in any serious programmer's library. "UNIX Internals" is one of those books. I originally encountered "UNIX Internals" in my undergraduate operating systems class. At the time, I liked it, but I didn't really appreciate its full beauty until I re-read it with a few years of operating systems experience under my belt. I work as an operating ...

UNIX (Visual QuickStart Guide)19 reviews
Deborah S. Ray, Eric J. Ray

Peachpit Press, 1998

Very practical, reference-like
The book is easy to use and understand, good choice for beginners, but might be a bit wordy for advanced users. Its structure is very similar to a reference book, runs along the UNIX commands in 17 chapters, and provides enough information and examples to their usage. It contains three appendices summarizing the UNIX files and directories, the UNIX commands and their flags. It contains no ...

Hacking Linux Exposed, Second Edition41 reviews
Brian Hatch, James Lee

McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, 2002

The best hands-on Linux security book just got better
I'm a big fan of the Hacking Exposed style of writing. All offensive theory is backed up by command line examples, followed by defensive countermeasures. Hacking Exposed: Linux, 2nd Ed (HE:L2E) follows this tradition, updating the content of the first edition and adding 200 pages of new content. Although I reviewed the first edition in Sep 01, reading the second edition reminded me of the ...

Linux(R) Quick Fix Notebook (Bruce Perens' Open Source Series)23 reviews
Peter Harrison

Prentice Hall PTR, 2005

Great reference.
It's been two years since I've purchased this book, and I still reference it from time to time. This book covers many common open-source applications used in conjunction with linux (bind, samba, sendmail, etc). The examples are well-written. It's a great book for someone who is wanting to educate themselves to use linux. I will note that the book seems to be red-hat/fedora biased. I use ...

Samba: Integrating Linux and Windows with CDROM16 reviews
John D. Blair

No Starch Press, 2000

Excellent! It's EASIER than you THINK!
Samba in a cinch. You pick up this book and within an hour you can have Samba running. There is really nothing to it. John Blair is a member of the Samba team, so he REALLY knows his stuff. He's also a remarkably good technical writer. All the details are here, and the index is great. If you need something that this book doesn't cover, then you're way beyond me! Have to setup Samba in a ...

Grokking the GIMP19 reviews
Carey Bunks

Sams, 2000

Most Current, to date, that I've discovered, on the Gimp
I have searched high and low for a decent book on the Gimp. There are a several, good references ("Learning the Gimp in 24 Hours", "Essential Gimp for Web Developers", etc.) though many are out dated due to the rapid progress progress the developers. The Gimp, an excellent example of what open source cooperation produces, is well represented in this book. The author illustrates the use of the ...

Oracle8i Database Administration13 reviews
Noel Yuhanna

Manning Publications, 1999

Most useful DBA book I've read so far
As an Oracle Instructor and DBA I've had the opportunity to review numerous Oracle texts for DBA's and have to say I've been quite disappointed with most of them. Mr. Yuhanna's book however is an exception. Out of the many DBA texts I have on my shelf this is the one I goto most frequently. Unlike other texts which spend excessive amounts of time covering uncommonly used features and little to ...

UNIX Backup and Recovery16 reviews
W. Curtis Preston

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 1999

The Computer Backup Book
This is *THE* Computer System backup book. It contains all the basics of why you want to backup computer systems, plus many of the real world experience details. It is written from a Unix perspective, but is still applicable to Windows and other non-Unix environments. I've been using this book as a general guide for several years now. It was a book I watched work it's way through the O'Reilly ...

Building Clustered Linux Systems (HP Professional Series)11 reviews
Robert W. Lucke

Prentice Hall PTR, 2004

Outstanding value
This book is a very straightforward, clearly written and valuable introduction to Linux clustering. Geared toward system folks, it also provides numerous `on-ramps' into the basics of clustering to accommodate quick, relevant review of supporting technology for the reader. It is essentially a map for getting from start to finish in any Linux cluster project. Specific situations, conditions, and ...

Understanding UNIX/LINUX Programming: A Guide to Theory and Practice14 reviews
Bruce Molay

Prentice Hall, 2002

An excellent course through Unix and Linux with copious code and examples.
Unix has had the luxury of being one of the most documented operating systems in history. Many books have been dedicated to documenting the internals of Unix and Unix-like systems and some have risen to the ranks of classic texts regarded by all as necessary to understanding the inner workings of Unix. Understanding Unix®/Linux Programming would be in excellent company with these books. The book ...

Complete Idiot's Guide to UNIX (The Complete Idiot's Guide)12 reviews
Bill Wagner

Alpha, 1998

Not a kid's review
This is a great review for any beginner who really knows nothing about UNIX. It's not boring and "text-bookish", but it's also not stupid and sappy, which is something that sometimes with books for beginners. Highly reccomended!

Advanced DBA Certification Guide and Reference for DB2(R) Universal Database v8 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows ...15 reviews
Dwaine R. Snow, Thomas Xuan Phan

IBM Press, 2003

Absolutely the best DB2 book!
I just found this book, and after reading it wish I had found this years ago. This is the most comprehensive book on DB2 that I have ever seen. This book has already saved me a lot of time. The performance chapter is great and helped me improve the performance of my DB2 server by over 30% in less than a week.

Unix User's Handbook13 reviews
Marty Poniatowski

Prentice Hall, 2000

Awesome!
I'm surprised how much content was put in this book. They did an excellent job on covering a wide array of topics: Unix commands, XWindow System, File/Dir System, tools, Shell Programming, KornShell, C, and Bash environment, Samba, and Internet Programming. It also dedicates some time with C++, Perl, and Java, which made me happy. A plus for man documantion listings. My only grudge is the index, ...

Installing Linux on a Dead Badger13 reviews
Lucy A. Snyder

Creative Guy Publishing, 2007

Zombies, and Vampires, and LINUX - Oh my!
Lucy Snyder has one of the most unique voices in speculative fiction, and this book is an example of her at her best. What Terry Prachett does for fantasy, what Douglas Adams did for S/F, what Christopher Moore does for horror, Lucy Snyder does for technogeekism. She twists it, she warps it, and she makes it side-splittingly funny. She is well on her way to creating a lexicon of humor that ...

Absolute FreeBSD: The Complete Guide to FreeBSD, 2nd Edition14 reviews
Michael W. Lucas

No Starch Press, 2007

THE FreeBSD Bible
Absolute FreeBSD: The Complete Guide to FreeBSD, 2nd Edition is the perfect combination for FreeBSD's own Handbook. At times the Handbook might seem too straightforward by not offering advices or sharing experiences. Michael Lucas' Absolute FreeBSD on the other hand presents the reader with rich information, background, advice and reasoning although focusing on the network administrator and ...

Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series)13 reviews
W. Richard Stevens, Stephen A. Rago

Addison-Wesley Professional, 2008

Great that it's now available in paperback!
Three years ago, this second edition was released in hardcover. A worthy and needed updating of the first edition. Now this paperback edition is made available. The cheaper cost will benefit some readers. Its reputation as one of the standard unix texts means that many unix and linux programmers need it in their workplace. But possibly the cost of the hardcover version was a deterrent. ...
