Hello World!: Computer Programming for Kids and Other Beginners10 reviews
Warren Sande, Carter Sande

Manning Publications, 2009

Excellent but designed for PC not Mac
I have been programming and teaching programming at the university level for 25 years and I have been looking for years to find a book for children, like my 10 year old son, who wanted to learn about programming but were not up to the high school reading level. This book perfectly fills the niche. With clear writing, well thought through examples and gentle humor, it is superb for the young ...

Version Control with Git: Powerful Tools and Techniques for Collaborative Software Development5 reviews
Jon Loeliger, Loeliger Jon

O'Reilly Media, 2009

well written; easy to understand
I found this book to be very well and carefully written. As a technical writer and editor, I'm extremely picky about copy errors, language usage, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to find almost no problems of this sort. I also found the book remarkably easy to understand. Given the complex and esoteric nature of the topic matter, this is quite an accomplishment! In summary, I would ...

RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide (Exam RH302) (Certification Press)47 reviews
Michael Jang

McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, 2007

for the novice or the seasoned...
I recently purchased the RHCE Exam Guide by Michael Jang, and I give the book all five stars because it is exactly what I expected it to be: an excellent, thorough, and practical approach to Linux administration. I was first introduced to Michael through his Fedora Core 5 book, which was also an excellent reference. Indeed, I often refer to the Fedora 5 book for straight answers for many ...

VMware Cookbook: A Real-World Guide to Effective VMware Use1 review
Troy Ryan, Helmke Matthew

O'Reilly Media, 2009

Effective and useful guide for VMware
As someone who works with VMware most everyday, I'm always on the lookout for new tips, ideas and things that make administration easier. VMware Cookbook is organized into seven chapters that cover everything from installation to automation and much in between. The authors do a great job of explaining the nuts and bolts of core VMware functions in very understandable terms. The resource ...

Learning Python (Animal Guide)142 reviews
Mark Lutz, Lutz Mark

O'Reilly Media, 2009

Good book
It's a great book. I did buy a slightly outdated version, which was why it was under $6 (including shipping), but the basics are there. Beginner programmers: This book is perfect. Though it doesn't have all the humor of a "For Dummies" book, it's not dry reading (IMHO). Expert programmers: Don't buy this book for yourself; it's a little long-winded. You'll learn the language, but you'll ...

Embedded Linux Primer: A Practical Real-World Approach12 reviews
Christopher Hallinan

Prentice Hall PTR, 2006

Really heapful
For those engineers who start their first embedded Linux project, this book is a must have. The book is not for those who want to understand how kernel runs but it gives you the most important concept and work flow to bring up the OS on your development board. The author also provides a useful further reading list in case you want to dig more. A very practical and clearly written book and I would ...

Red Hat® Certified Technician & Engineer (RHCT and RHCE) Training Guide and Administrator's Reference4 reviews
Asghar Ghori

Endeavor Technologies Inc., 2009

Quality material, recommended
Well, it's a new book on the topic. I found it to be a lot more concise than Jang's. It actually gives you a lot more information than Jang's book (in terms of commands you need to be familiar with, examples and explaining basic principles), it just does so in approximately same number of pages. Troubleshooting and exercise section are located at the end of the book and offer scenarios that ...

C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 (2nd Edition) (Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development Series)18 reviews
Jasmin Blanchette, Mark Summerfield

Prentice Hall PTR, 2008

Great introduction for advanced programmers
If you have never developped GUI applications using object oriented techniques I would reccommend you stay away from this book it jumps into the details too quickly. Try Foundations of Qt® Development (Expert's Voice in Open Source) instead. Sooner or later, you'll have to have this book, though, to get you to the next level. There seems to be room for yet another book which discusses the ...

Programming Python9 reviews
Mark Lutz

O'Reilly Media, 2006

Huge book
This book is one of the biggest books I own. It's amazing that the author was able to fit actual Python code on almost every page. I used to own the first version and I have to say it's definitely gotten better.

Python in a Nutshell, Second Edition (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))40 reviews
Alex Martelli, Martelli Alex

O'Reilly Media, 2009

Excellent reference book for Python. Not for learning, but great reference.
This book is strictly a reference book. It contains snippets of examples and detailed explanations about each Python function/features. It is very, very good for that. The section on strings, for example, contains about 15 pages on every possible string methods, and a brief example. Perfect for a reference.

Python Pocket Reference (Python in Your Pocket)16 reviews
Lutz Mark

O'Reilly Media, 2009

Very handy reference with all the answers
This is a great little book. I have had three revisions of it and plan to get the next one when it is published. I keep it in my mini 10v running ubuntu linux (9.10) netbook's sleeve when I travel. Perfect little reference and easily worth the cost.

Linux Device Drivers, 3rd Edition47 reviews
Jonathan Corbet, Alessandro Rubini, ...

O'Reilly Media, 2005

Possibly still the best book on the subject
Even though the third edition is showing its age - it covers kernel version 2.6.10, which is terribly old - in my opinion this is still the best book on the subject. Generally, it is not possible to create an up to date tutorial for programming the Linux kernel, since it changes constantly. SO, the key is to introduce the reader to the way of thinking necessary in order to understand and ...

Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide, Fifth Edition40 reviews
Wale Soyinka

McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, 2008

Excellent Basic Sys Admin Reference
This book is laid out in a clean, concise manner and is an excellent entree' to understanding basic Linux systems administration. It definitely helped me to get up-to-speed quickly in my new job, and although I am considerably more knowledgeable now, it continues to serve as a reliable reference for seldom performed tasks. Common tasks such as NIS setup are handled in a compact, cookbook style ...

Unix in a Nutshell, Fourth Edition58 reviews
Arnold Robbins, Robbins Arnold

O'Reilly Media, 2008

The perfect reference
This is in my opinion the best UNIX reference book on the market today. If you need to program or work in the OS you should own this book.

Classic Shell Scripting10 reviews
Arnold Robbins, Nelson H.F. Beebe

O'Reilly Media, 2005

Practical and useful
Great book. The emphasis is nicely split between actually using the shell itself and the whole supporting cast of unix tools (sed, awk, cut, join, sort etc.) The idea of carefully crafting solutions using the unix toolbox mindset is key. I also like the fact he doesn't try to teach to multiple shells, but first tries to emphasize portability by sticking mainly to a POSIX standard, and only later ...
