Field Guide to Liverwort Genera of Pacific North America
Wilfred B. Schofield
University of Washington Press
, 2002
Field Guide to Liverworts of the North Pacific Coast is the first comprehensive guide to liverworts and hornworts from southernmost California to Alaska. Small and insignificant to the casual eye, liverworts and hornworts are sometimes confused with mosses and lichens. Yet botanically they are quite distinctive and under a hand lens, these plants can assume a surprising elegance. The book describes representative species of each genus in the ...

Too much reliance on microscopic detail
I bought this book to identify mosses found in Maine when on vacation from Europe. I had a magnifying glass at my disposal (10x, 20x) but found that the keys started asking questions about microscopic details very early on. This made it (too) difficult to get at least to the right family. Liverworts worked better than mosses.

Very informative. Wonderful info for the novice as well as the veteran moss lover.
This is a wonderfully informative book. It is the kind of book that has material both for the person who knows nothing about moss gardening and the person who is a veteran moss enthusiast. If we were more into moss and less into lawns the environment would be more healthy. We wouldn't have to pump polluting weed killers and fertilizers into our precious ground water. There is nothing more ...

A long-awaited addition to the botany titles in the highly-regarded Collins New Naturalist series, this book covers mosses and liverworts, a group of about 24,000 fairly low-growing plants. This authoritative guide explains their ecological importance, how they can act as environmental indicators and their general biology. With full-colour illustrations throughout, it covers distribution patterns and dispersal mechanisms, their relation with ...

Learn to look closely
This book is a good, field-based introduction to the common mosses and liverworts of the northeastern United States. It is an ideal starting point for those who have noticed mosses and liverworts and want to learn more. The large color photographs make it easy to recognize the most common species and the text describes the habitats where these plants can be found. Its size makes it easy to carry ...

Fascinating World of Liverworts!
This book enabled me to identify liverworts and hornworts in an area of North Carolina where few (if any?) had ever researched them before. Now I realize that Megaceros aenigmaticus also grows about a hundred miles farther east from any population known heretofore. Pantropical Dumortiera hirsuta occurs nearby and might represent diploid ssp. nepalensis, an extreme rarity in North America. ...
British Mosses and Liverworts: An Introductory Work
E. V. Watson
Cambridge University Press
, 1981
Dr Watson's lucid introduction to British Mosses and Liverworts, first published in 1955, has since become a standard work. The author gives full descriptions and ecological details of over 200 of the commoner or more notable species, illustrating each to show its diagnostic microscopic and macroscopic features, and also provides brief notes on many other species. The introduction on the general characteristics of bryophytes, and the simple ...

This is helpful for the lay person because it groups Bryophites by their habitat, such as on stumps, rocks, forest types, stream banks, etc.
