Anthropological Locations: Boundaries and Grounds of a Field Science

University of California Press, 1997

Among the social sciences, anthropology relies most fundamentally on "fieldwork"--the long-term immersion in another way of life as the basis for knowledge. In an era when anthropologists are studying topics that resist geographical localization, this book initiates a long-overdue discussion of the political and epistemological implications of the disciplinary commitment to fieldwork. These innovative, stimulating essays--carefully chosen to ...

Location Lighting Solutions: Expert Professional Techniques for Artistic and Commercial Success (PDN Pros)3 reviews
Jack Neubart

Amphoto Books, 2006

A top pick for any photographer who wants to learn these basics
Location shots are often filled with uncertainty, from obtaining the right permits to shoot on location to working with existing lighting and freelance staff. LOCATION LIGHTING SOLUTIONS addresses the most frequent of these issues, going behind the scenes to see exactly how a location is shot, how professional photographers use tricks for special effects and problem-solving alike, and how ...

Fantastic Locations: Fields of Ruin (D&D Accessory)3 reviews
Richard Pett

Wizards of the Coast, 2006

SHORT BUT CHALLENGING ADVENTURE
Fantastic Locations: Fields of Ruin is a short but challenging adventure for 4 characters of approximately 8th level. The adventure comes with a booklet, two large, double-sided, full color fold out map grids, and a DM screen with smaller versions of the maps with keys to encounters. The adventure is designed to be played on the maps, ideally with D&D miniatures. The ruins in question are ...

Fantastic Locations: The Frostfell Rift (Dungeons & Dragons Supplement)1 review
Wizards Team

Wizards of the Coast, 2006

Great for D&D miniatures
I have all the "fantastic locations" maps, this one surprised me with a two storied building. The module is not that great but it works just fine with inexperienced players and a little modifications in the plot would make it great for those game groups looking for a visual description of the setting, but If you're looking for a good module, I don't think this is good for you, only if your ...

Fantastic Locations: Hellspike Prison (Dungeon & Dragons Roleplaying Game: Rules Supplements)3 reviews
Matthew Sernett, Rob Heinsoo

Wizards of the Coast, 2005

A pretty 'hot' product from WOTC
This is a premium product from Wizards, again showcasing the major changes since buying-out TSR. The packaging is great: shrinkwrapped, with an outer cardstock cover, great cover art by Francis Tsai; interior cardstock is a color repro of the four miniatures maps included in the module. As alluded to, the module also includes four full-color maps of Hellspike, printed on bonded, heavy gloss ...

The Location of Culture (Routledge Classics)18 reviews
Homi K. Bhabha

Routledge, 2004

The enunciatory present
In The Location of Culture, Bhabha argues for a fundamental realignment of the methodology of cultural analysis away from ontology toward the "performative" and "enunciatory present" (p.178). Such a shift, he claims, provides a basis for the negotiation of cultural difference rather than its automatic repression or negation in the face of irreconcilable oppositions. Bhabha's emphasis on the ...

The Complete Locations of Star Wars: Inside the Worlds of the Entire Star Wars Saga19 reviews
Kristin Lund, Simon Beecroft, ...

DK, 2005

Where you've always wanted to go
This book is great!! I love how it approaches Star Wars as if it where real in the telling of each local or spot. It makes you feel even more apart of what's going on in the Saga and only improves the feeling of the movies for me anyways. If you've always had questions about each place you've seen on screen then this is the book for you!!

Jeff Smith's Posing Techniques for Location Portrait Photography4 reviews
Jeff Smith

Amherst Media, Inc., 2007

Great book, well written
Jeff Smith does a nice job of conveying the strategy behind photography outside of the studio. Not only informative but also teaches the reader to sharpen his/her skill. Posing techniques for both individuals and groups as well as maximizing environmental surroundings to work for your photographs are discussed in detail. An invaluable book for any photographer's library.

The Illinois Road Guide to Haunted Locations1 review
Chad Lewis, Terry Fisk

Unexplained Research Publishing LLC, 2007

Another fun entry in the series
This is another in the series of "Haunted Road Guides" by these authors. (They have also done ones for MN, SD, WI, and IA.) Each listing is about 1-2 pages long, with photos of the site, directions to find it, a listing of what is reported there, and an "investigation" section regarding what the authors actually were able to find out upon investigating the site. While most of the sites are ...

X Marks the Spot: On Location With The X-Files6 reviews
Louisa Gradnitzer, Todd Pittson

Arsenal Pulp Press, 2002

A unique and interesting approach
This entertaining and educational book shows us the development of a great TV series from a unique perspective rarely seen before: the Locations department. The first 5 seasons of The X-Files are brought to life behind the scenes with the people on the front line. The book is filled with lots of great and funny stories about the adventures of the Locations folks and their desire to turn ...

Location, Location, Location: How to Select the Best Site for Your Business (PSI Successful Business Library)5 reviews
Luigi Salvaneschi

Bookworld Services, 1996

Informative, Insightful, and Instruction
The basic premise of this book is based on the relationship between two things: location and market. To borrow a quote from the book - " The right location in the wrong market will cause your business to fail - more than if you plan the wrong location in the right market." Building upon this belief, the author teaches the reader how to systematically go about researching for the right ...

The Iowa Road Guide to Haunted Locations1 review
Chad Lewis, Terry Fisk

Unexplained Research LLC, 2007

Your Travel Agent for Spooky Road Trips
This is another installment in the haunted "road guide" series. The entries include detailed directions to find the site and investigate for yourself. I enjoy reading the details on what's been reported, the section on the background history, and the results of the authors' on-site investigations. I also like that there are photos of each site. Some of the sites are definitely quite ...

Dragondown Grotto (Dungeons & Dragons Fantastic Locations Accessory)2 reviews
Ed Stark

Wizards of the Coast, 2006

Great addition to the Fantastic Locations
Like the other Fantastic Locations, this one has two battle maps (double sided) and an encounter booklet. The art is uniformly well done and the maps can be easily flattened and laminated at your local office supply store to increase their durability. These are some of the nicest accessories published by WotC, in my opinion. They get plenty of use in DDM Skirmish and my home RPG campaigns.

The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook: Extended Edition17 reviews
Ian Brodie

HarperCollinsPublishers PTY Limited, 2005

Brilliant!
What a blast. We took the original edition on our tour two years ago and will be taking the extended edition this year. We also took a GPS with us and called our tour, "GPS to Mordor: there and back again," and dutifully listed the references we achieved in our trip diaries. Through unseasonal sleet and floods and snow we had more fun than anyone deserves hunting the references and squinting at ...

The Wisconsin Road Guide to Haunted Locations2 reviews
Chad Lewis, Terry Fisk

Unexplained Research Publishing Company, 2004

It's Hard to Read Just One
I picked this book up while on a road trip. The entries are short, concise, and tell you what's been seen, a short blurb on the history of the place, and what if anything the authors found upon "investigation" of the site. Each site includes a photo and driving directions so the reader can find the site and check it out. It's not too in-depth, which is nice because it doesn't get boring. The ...
