This is definetly a book that every Ebony American should have on his or her shelf. Of course, since that's not possible, I encourage you, Amazon customer, to buy this book! Brilliant views on thinking about men and masculinities!
This book is a must-have for all students of men's studies--in fact, for all gender related--courses. The book is truly interdisciplinary. Dr. Raewyn Connell is a leading sociologist from Australia. She combines her past academic efforts in education, political science, and feminism and over two decades of ethnographic studies on men and masculinities to develop her theory for understanding ...

says it like no one else
I agree largely and almost wholly with the previous and first independent reviewer of this book: Eng's 'Racial Castration' is at times, hyperacademic and perhaps even overly into the realm of philosophy and not social studies. Still, it is a unique, overdue work on the perception of-- and the creation of the perception of-- asian american males in mainstream American society. I believe that Eng ...

Excellent analysis and moving autobiographical journey.
I wish I had this book when I was teaching undergraduate Women's Studies courses! Jensen uses the topic of pornography to cover the most pressing issues facing feminism, and society at large, today. He has built upon the work of radical feminist scholars in regards to applying feminist theory to pornography. He looks at how the industry, its violent content, and access to pornography through ...

Bad Boys Review
I was excited to begin reading this book and to learn how the school system unproportionately suspended and disciplined African American males. I was not expecting to learn how the author related the concept of masculinity and discipline into cause and effect paradigm. Even though this class and other sociological classes have taught me to think for myself, ask questions, and expand on concepts ...

Tough guy theater.
While U.S. citizens like to think that they are residing in the "home of the brave," the truth is we're a very frightened population. The constant warnings that one country or another is a threat to our existence, the hysteria over immigrants, the endless stream of cop shows; it all serves to frighten the people of our military empire. That's where the tough guy marketing of Bush comes in, he ...
Black Masculinity And the U.S. South: From Uncle Tom to Gangsta (The New Southern Studies) (The New Southern ...
Riche Richardson
University of Georgia Press
, 2007
This pathbreaking study of region, race, and gender reveals how we underestimate the South's influence on the formation of black masculinity at the national level. Many negative stereotypes of black men-often contradictory ones-have emerged from the ongoing historical traumas initiated by slavery. Are black men emasculated and submissive or hypersexed and violent? Nostalgic representations of black men have arisen as well: think of the ...

If you ever buy any men's studies text, this should be it!
Messner basically develops a sociological chart for analyzing writings and activism from men's groups. He reviews the literature in this field over the past three decades. This book will help you to understand much about antisexist men, the Million Man March, gay male pornography, and many other topics. This is definitely one of my favorite men's studies text.

Great book, a must have!
I personally found this book to offer a wide variety on essays that deal with patriarchal models of masculine ideals. It is as informing a book on the subject as you will ever be able to come across with, and it deals with more than just the feminist discourse as it offers a new theoretical framework with which to gaze at the male.
Progressive Black Masculinities
Routledge
, 2006
In the struggle for pride and political agency, the imperative to "be a man" has been central to the lives of black males. Yet, what it means to be a black man-in terms of both racial and gender identity-has been subject to continual debate in public and academic spheres alike. Progressive Black Masculinities brings together leading black cultural critics including Michael Eric Dyson, Mark Anthony Neal, and Patricia Hill Collins to examine ...

(First World, white) Rural Men
There's no such thing as too much men's studies: this privileged group needs to see itself and not think of itself as universal or de-sexed. Also, men's studies fulfills the most when it covers the intersectionality of masculinity and other areas. Books have been produced about older men, black men, bisexual men, rich men, poor men, and finally this book publishes work on rural men. Like much ...

Man o' War
This is a first class work by a literary historian of wide erudition. Leo Braudy traces the changing nature of maleness as seen though the wars and consequent cultural upheavals of the last thousand years. The author has read widely and from that has come a new view of this enormous subject. His references are European, Asian and North American -- all quite different, of course, though in ...

Peter Caster

In Prisons, Race, and Masculinity, Peter Caster demonstrates the centrality of imprisonment in American culture, illustrating how incarceration, an institution inseparable from race, has shaped and continues to shape U.S. history and literature in the starkest expression of what W. E. B. DuBois famously termed ?the problem of the color line.? A prison official in 1888 declared that it was the freeing of slaves that actually created ...
