Mennonite Community Cookbook: Favorite Family Recipes

A classic!
OK, it's a little old-fashioned, but it's a relic of a bygone age, and many of the recipes deserve to be given new life. The weaknesses are mostly in some of the main-course recipes that, by all appearances, can be extremely fatty and greasy. Speaking as someone who just lost 30 pounds, I don't need that! But they're probably good for an occasional indulgence. The cookie, cake and pie recipes ...

Highly recommended!
One of my favorite traditions is the church fellowship meal - where each family brings a dish to pass, and the whole congregation gathers together to eat in Christian fellowship. This wonderful book is a collection of over 900 recipes (I took the author's word for it, I am NOT going to try to count them!) that were collected from Mennonite churches across the United States. The main part of ...

An Insightful, Fascinating, and Relevant Expression of the Mennonite Story
This is one of the best church books I've ever read--it definitely deserves re-reading. In order to avoid the common mistake of telling the Anabaptist story by starting in the sixteenth century, Roth opens up by relating the story of Jesus and His first followers, and summarizes the first three centuries of the Christian faith. He then moves to the conversion of Constantine, the Roman ...

GREAT book!!!
Whether you are Mennonite or just curious, this is a great book to read. I was raised Mennonite, but strayed away from the religion when I was a teen- it seemed so old fashioned. But after reading this book, I can say that I really am a Mennonite at heart. It clarified all my questions about where our beliefs come from. Mennonite beliefs are very simple, straightforward, and rather admirable. ...

A Good Baseline
This book provides a good baseline and is written by one of the best-known writers in Mennonite circles. It gives a good overview of the basic traditional Mennonite beliefs. By reading this book and comparing the text with current beliefs and practices in the Mennonite Church and General Conference Mennonite Church, the reader can see how the church has drifted from its traditional beliefs.

An Advanced Teaching in Mennonite History
I read this book a few years back and remember it as a book that was very detailed and informative. It is not an easy read. It's more on the level of college material and definitely for the serious student of Mennonite history. Don't let that scare you away. Even if you pick up one half of what is written you will probably know more history than most Mennonites. I found this to be true in my ...

The Mennonite Starter Kit
Wonderful! A masterful compilation of almost every inside joke, cliché, and quirk of the Mennonite Church. Probably not very funny if you aren't Mennonite, but as the title suggests, it's a great way to learn to understand the Church if you've just joined.

Not just a guidebook to one specific 18th century house
Sure, this book was designed to explain the origins of the Hans Herr House built near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1719. But it includes historical background about the Mennonites from their beginnings in Switzerland and the German Palatinate through their immigrations to North America in the early 1700s. Aspects of typical daily life are detailed as well, such as building construction ...

A treasure
This Hymnal is a treasure to me. It has a variety of hymns, including many German hymns (many translated by Catherine Winkworth), English hymns, (including some with music by Ralph Vaughn Williams), and a select number of gospel hymns. The arrangements are always beautiful. I love the many songs which I have found only in this hymnal.

Along the way, the reader is treated to many black-and-white pictures, and a lot of information on ...

A book for life
Reviewing a photo book is extremely subjective. I first read this book 5 years ago when I started college and wasn't impressed by it. I picked it up again last year and see the pictures with new eyes. The pictures and writing create a piece of literature more about humanity, independence and will than Mennonites. It is my Bible.

The best book on some of the most interesting peoples around
As a person always curious about lifestyles different from my seemingly mundane existince in suburban Melbourne, the Amish and Old Order Mennonites, with their resistance to technology and extremely gentle and peaceful beliefs, have always fascinated me. The Johns Hopkins University Press

During the American Civil War, the Mennonites and Amish faced moral dilemmas that tested the very core of their faith. How could they oppose both slavery and the war to end it? How could they remain outside the conflict without entering the American mainstream to secure legal conscientious objector status? In the North, living this ethical paradox marked them as ambivalent participants to the Union cause; in the South, it marked them as clear ...
