Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion

David Hume
Merchant Books, 2009
Is God Knowable By Reason?
David Hume made a reputation by writing on reason and its limits. The main thrust of the Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is to question whether theological arguments for God that assign Him positive attributes (omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, etc.) go beyond reason's limits in assigning these attributes. We watch Cleanthes (believer in theological arguments), Demea (believer more ...

A Genealogical Marvel Too
For the past three years I have been researching my maternal genealogy (NH, MA, NY, NJ, and NE). For background I have been immersed in a great number of books, manuscripts, journals and other references. So, I just wanted to add that the work of Thomas Truxes is superb as a genealogical background source for New York (and beyond) too! For me (as well as others I would suspect) it fills a void ...

Outstanding
Finally! I found it! A copy of Bunyan's autobiography Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. OK, I've been able to get it for years, but never for this cheap. $3.50 at a used bookstore in Royal Oak, MI. There it was, just sitting quietly on the shelf. So innocent, so unassuming. Lime green cover fading from either over use or neglect. I picked up the 10 books on top of it and pulled it out ...

A Compelling Read on Strategy and Change
There are books that describe strategic planning processes, others that focus on creating high performing teams, and scores of books on leadership. In the New How, Nilofer Merchant has combined them all in a transformational approach of engaging employees at all levels across the enterprise to co-create and implement winning strategies. Implementing change in organizations is complex and ...

I do not know the author nor have taken her cooking class.
If you notice the other reviews I think they all know the author personally or have taken her cooking classes at some point. Most of them have only written one review for Amazon and that being this book. A couple of them have written 2 so that leads me to believe that the other reviews while well meaning aren't necessarily unbiased. I would like to offer that review as I do not know the ...

Glorious and good for the soul
I am a big fan of movie soundtracks. I have a few favorite composers that I collect. Jocelyn Pook was not one of them, but now has been added to my list. I ordered the movie originally because I love Shakespeare adaptations, and Al Pacino and this one, The Merchant of Venice had received good reviews. I loved it. Especially because of the music, which seems to wind seamlessly through the ...

My husband's brother
One of the hero's of this book was my brother-in-law Calvin Smith. I only knew that he died trying to save others. I am so happy to at last find a book with the whole story in it. I have a few pictures of him for the family tree, but now I will also have this book to pass down. Calvin (also called Todd and Rae) had no children.

A Blast from the Past
Number me among the many who read this book in grade school back in the late 60's or 70's and the name stuck with me through the years. Later as an adult, I returned to this book to read it anew and experience the magic again. Yes, this is book designed for the younger reader. But as is the case with most well written books, all ages will find something to take away. Treasure Island, ...

great book for bassists and luthiers
First, I am not a luthier, but somebody who owns a bass. My son plays it, so I am only really a guardian for the bass. this book gives lots of information about how to repair a bass, and is also beneficial for initial setup. in the murky world of uprights, where only a few people truly understand the whole instrument, having access to this information is priceless for understanding what is ...

Applause! Applause!
"The Hinterlands", Karen Mercury's first historical novel is brimming with fascinating and irresistible characters who have absolutely kept my heart pounding with anticipation as their lives clash and mesh on their journey into the inner depths of the dark jungles of Nigeria, 1896. Embarking from seeming innocence, the author expertly unfolds a tangled and steamy adventure, discovering bloody ...

Another great collection of fairy tales.
The Andrew Lang collections are well worth it. I read them when I was a child (bless that library) and when I saw them for sale I couldn't resist. The stories have retained their freshness and it is interesting to see similar themes dealt with by different cultures. These would be great for parents reading to their children or for children looking for something interesting and fun to read. ...

A Fascinating Life
Stephen Grant has written a wonderfully readable account of an exceptional personality. As an Africanist I was especially interested in Peter Strickland's activities on Goree island--he was a merchant there before becoming the first U.S. consul to Senegal, an unpaid position he held from 1883-1905--but other aspects of his life are equally interesting. His concern for common sailors in the ...

Thomas Paine
Merchant Books, 2010
Now I know why my (former) pastor displayed irritation with Thomas Paine.
The Age of Reason, a short work that is imminently readable by Thomas Paine, one of the USA's founding fathers, is instructive on more than one level. On one level, you get to see the thoughts of a man that were representative of several of the major players in the foundation of the United States, and you can come away with the realization that the US was not founded on Christianity, as ...

Note, I did not buy this book yet. I only picked it up and started reading it in the bookstore. I can't stop thinking about this book so I felt that a review was necessary even if I haven't read the whole thing yet.
