Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness: Walking the Buddha's Path20 reviews
Henepola Gunaratana

Wisdom Publications, 2001

Excellent very approachable material, inspiring
Mindfulness and loving kindness are a couple of great approaches to living advocated by these ancient teachings made into cakewalk reading. When I go back to older more traditional interpretations they feel stiff and inhospitable. For the secular reader especially I think this makes for a pleasantly palatable on ramp to Buddhism.

A very zen approach to becoming more mindful and thereby becoming more meditative and spiritual about every day miracles. This book hit all the high notes with me.

True Love: A Practice for Awakening the Heart21 reviews
Thich Nhat Hanh

Shambhala, 2004

A mini version of "A New Earth"
The copyright of this book is 1997. Eckart Tolle's book "A New Earth" came out in 2005... 8 years later. This book is like the pocket book for "A New Earth". Eckart Tolle goes into greater dept in his book on the same topics that are mentioned in Thick Nhat Hanh's book. "True Love" gets right to the heart of awakening the heart. I especially enjoyed the chapters on The Energy of Mindfulness, ...

One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps24 reviews
Kevin Griffin

Rodale Books, 2004

A perfect synthesis
This book does a fantastic job of demonstrating the synergies of working a 12 step program and buddhist practice. I think it would be valuable for anyone who is still uncomfortable with the Christian overtones of the 12 steps as it explains their origin and how to work them in relation to higher power of your own understanding.

The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living18 reviews
Russ Harris

Trumpeter, 2008

The end of all self-help
It took me a long time to get through this book. I had it sitting on the shelf amongst several other self-help titles, and when I reached certain portions of the book I found myself bored or disinterested in taking the kind of actions suggested, so I moved to another title. I later realized that by doing so I was exercising my own 'control strategies' as Russ puts it, which really didn't do ...

Attachment in Psychotherapy19 reviews
David J. Wallin

The Guilford Press, 2007

Skillful integration
David Wallin presents a skillful integration of the road maps of attachment theory, intersubjectivity, neuroscience and mindfulness to help readers develop a Wise Understanding of the journey from a wounded "me" to a healthy "I" to experiencing an awareness beyond the personal self that we could call the realm of the Wise Self.

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself (New Harbinger/Noetic Books)44 reviews
Michael A. Singer

New Harbinger Publications/ Noetic Books, 2007

Thank You Sir
I've read my share of spiritual guidance; from D.T. Suzuki, right on up through Eckhardt Tolle, and I've also sat before a number of today's popular teachers. There is nothing else like this to be found. It's the keys to the castle... an instruction manual detailing the moment by moment experience of the psyche on the path of purification in pursuit of self realization. He is offering the ...

Mindfulness for Beginners9 reviews
Jon Kabat-Zinn

Sounds True, 2006

Life changing
I have been lucky enough to take two Mindfulness courses and they have changed my life. Both were run by excellent course leaders but nothing compares with hearing Mindfulness founder Jon Kabat Zinn discuss the philosophy and methodology behind it. His wit, compassion and way with words themselves make CD1 compulsive listening as well as explaining the reasons for CD2 which are the practices ...

Richard A. Singer is a highly respected psychotherapist who has devoted his life to understanding Eastern psychology/philosophy: he has also committed his time to writing books on his personal discoveries and shares his thoughts not as a 'Guru or Sage', but as a warmly friend guide to bring the secrets of Eastern wisdom to the public. The Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology14 reviews
Jack Kornfield

Bantam, 2008

A Wise Heart
I purchased The Wise Heart in June of 2008. I read many of this type of book but this wise heart has caught me like no other. It is an easy read but I have not yet finished it and this is August. I have found that I must pause and think after each chapter. I often can't make it through the entire chapter before I am in the midst of a new realization. His writing is clear, simple in ...

Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All ...17 reviews
Victoria Moran

HarperOne, 2007

Life as Art
Get ready to make a positive change in your life when you read this practical book. I was moved by Victoria's witty observations of life and her findings about what makes us fat, broke and lonely. No, it's not the food we eat, although that is important for good health. It's not willpower, although you can use what little you have of that commodity to make small changes each day. It's not having ...

Insight Meditation: The Practice of Freedom14 reviews
Joseph Goldstein

Shambhala, 2003

Best introduction to mindfulness available
This book is not a how-to-meditate introduction, but rather a why-we-meditate introduction. It is a wonderful book by an amazing teacher--a kind and caring individual who has made a big difference in the Dharma world. This book might change your life--buy it!

Teachings on Love: How Mindfulness Can Enhance Your Intimate Relationships12 reviews
Thich Nhat Hanh

Great book, great Dharma!
Zen Master Thich Naht Hanh's approach to teaching Zen Buddhism is enlightening. I have found many of the teachings very useful in the practice of true Dharma. It is inspiring and full of the energy of mindfulness we all need ...

The Practicing Mind: Bringing Discipline and Focus Into Your Life11 reviews
Thomas M. Sterner

Mountain Sage Publishing, 2006

Your Last Self Help Book?
Although I have bought and read literally hundreds of self help books in all categories through Amazon, the Practicing Mind by Thomas M. Sterner is by far the 1st book that has compelled me to write my very first Amazon review. Their are many things that make this book stand out. It is very short, with absolutely, no-fluff or fillings, with the result that every word and every phrase really ...

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy for Anxiety Disorders: A Practitioner's Treatment Guide to Using Mindfulness, ...14 reviews
Georg H. Eifert, John P. Forsyth

New Harbinger Publications, 2005

Challenging new approach, worth reading
Startling new way to treat anxiety disorders from a humanistic view aimed at creating a meaningful life despite high anxiety. The book is written very clearly and contains techniques such as metaphors and stories that are excellent and can be used with more traditional therapy. To use ACT alone in therapy to treat anxiety disorders by just reading the clear instructions of the book and ...

Leading People the Black Belt Way: Conquering the Five Core Problems Facing Leaders Today13 reviews
Timothy, H Warneka

Asogomi Publishing International, 2006

Emotions Are The Untapped Resources of Organizations
So begins Tim Warneka's excellent book on leadership. As a practitioner and teacher of aikido, I appreciate Tim's use of aikido as a metaphor and teaching tool. How can we acknowledge and make use of emotional energy? As leaders, we can no longer afford to ignore this question. In "Leading People the Black Belt Way," you will learn core problems facing today's leaders and how to engage and manage ...

Moment by Moment: The Art and Practice of Mindfulness9 reviews
Jerry Braza, Thich Nhat Hanh

Tuttle Publishing, 1997

Control The Stress In Your Life
Dr. Jerry Braza conducted a stress reduction seminar at my company, employing concepts from this book, and was quite effective. His major focus was upon warming your hands, willing your hands and fingers to feel heavier so that blood would flow to them and cause the temperature to rise. He used a small card that measured stress with color codes, and you placed your thumb on the card to ...
