Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children from Sex

The most important book I've read so far this year.
Judith Levine, Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children from Sex (University of Minnesota Press, 2002) I have read, over the years, a handful of books that I consider to be truly important, books that look at a particular aspect of our society, how it has damaged us (perhaps irreparably), and how we might change facets of our culture to stop further damage, and maybe heal some of ...

A Fascinating Account
Joyce Glassman's memoir is very well written and is truly a fascinating account. She manages to describe a scene and give the reader a glimpse of a particular era--long gone. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the 1950's, the beat generation, women in the 1950's, and New York City at that time.

great work-classic crime thriller

Her parents are distraught and the police are totally stymied, as their investigation goes nowhere. Sixty-three days later the corpse of the little girl is found. In a nearby neighborhood, six-year-old Emily Morrison has disappeared from her family's garden where she was playing. Like the ...

Necessary read:
This is a gorgeous, gorgeous book. I picked it up soon after it came out because the cover caught my eye; was instantly curious after the description of a fiction book focused on astronomy and the summary on the back. I expected to like it, and after my first reading that was exactly my reaction, but a couple years later and after many, many more readthroughs this is without a doubt one of the ...

impressive debut from a writer to watch
There are six stories in Kyle Minor's debut collection, and each story reveals his wide-ranging talent in new ways. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of IN THE DEVIL'S TERRITORY is how Minor easily slips into the private lives of a diverse cast of characters -- he knows our human secrets and isn't afraid to dig deep. If you've read Minor's essay in Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething ...

Niiiiiice!
Borat is not for everyone but those that guffawed their way through the film and still wanted more, this book takes the journey further. Definitely not for those with a delicate constitution but hilarious for the die hard fan.

Great for age level connecting with your child.
Seeing into the mind of a seven-year old is an amazing journey. From sullen independence to exhuberant joy at new horizons. Louise Bates Ames guides readers around the pitfalls and gives a new understanding to this inwardly viewed age. It's as wonderful as the rest of her age-related books.

J.P. Beaumont in the desert
This book offers quite a change of scenery for fans of the J.P. Beaumont series. The Washington born-and-bred policeman ends up in a rehab center which is a real contrast to his usual surroundings in the Pacific Northwest. His discoveries of things such as snakes and flash floods offer comic relief from the investigation into the death of his teen-aged roommate. In this book we also catch ...

Remote Medical Resource
Minor Emergences is making the rounds as the resource to have in the remote field. I'm a medic that works in isolated camps or offshore vessels with the closest MD available only via phone or email. Sometimes evacuating a patient to a higher level of care is not an easy thing to do or even a possibility. Being able to take care of minor problems and recognizing when you cannot is always a ...

Murder in E Minor
Robert Goldsborough has captured most of the elements necessary to write a good Nero Wolfe book. The dialog between Archie and Nero is not up to Rex Stout's standards, but it's not bad. All the regular characters show up as scheduled, and the plot is pretty good, though a bit contrived in its motive for murder. Certainly a good read for any Wolfe fan who is missing their "favorite fatty."

A great find for teachers, preachers and students
I am a bible teacher for a womens class at my church. This book is excellent for anyone who would like more information about the minor prophets. The book not only gives good information about these prophets, but connects their message to the new testament church as well. The book includes in each chapter applications of the Prophets message to todays society. This is an awsome book!! It will ...

A great Commentary that takes The Word of God seriously
The commentary is devided in two sections on every text. 1)the exegetical part with the crux interpretum, then 2) the expository part. I think this is a great way of writing a commentary because not all pastors and preachers know hebrew and if u don't a very exegetical commentary is rather booring to read. This commentary is great to read even if u don't know a word of hebrew. The exegetical ...

A kind and magical creature brings life to an old town.
Beautifully written tale of the last griffin who visits a town where his image-a statue- has been part of the old church for hundreds of years. The only person with enough courage to speak with the terrifying Griffin is the Minor Canon. The townsfolk are sure that the Griffin will eat their children. Their selfishness and small-mindedness leads them to a life they couldn't have imagined. ...

A surprising look at Minor White
Most of what has come down to us about Minor White as a teacher and thinker is based on his East Coast career from the late 1950s to the 1970s. This well edited, richly illustrated book deals with Minor White's time at the California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco), where he founded the photography program with Ansel Adams in 1946 and taught until 1953. There are fascinating details here ...

Excellent General Resource
In 1948 Charles Feinberg began the work that would evolve into a rare gem of a book when he published the first part of his extensive studies in the Minor Prophets. Originally, a collection of expository essays, Feinberg took great care in transferring them into a scholarly collection of much quality. Feinberg proves himself a first rate scholar with his careful exposition of the text. Before his ...

Excellent source for score-study and analysis.
The Dover Editions offer very affordable editions of some of the masterpieces of Classical music. In this way, the J.S. Bach Mass in B minor score is no exception. Offers alternate vocal part for the "Et in unum Dominum" duet. Plenty of room on the pages for notes, analytical comments, etc. Vocal parts are written in their respective clef as the score is taken from the ...

A Passage Worth Undertaking
For some reason monographs of and about Minor White seem far and few between. This is a welcome book as a consequence. I would however have liked to have seen the photographs and text organised in a different way, keep the information about home separate from the images themselves. I've not seen much of Minor White's work in the flesh so I can't comment on the quality of the reproductions, ...
